Yes. This was a safe hire with potential. Hammy is on the look out for the up and coming. That is obvious by all of the hires he has made. He looks for those guys who are young and hungry to give them a chance. Pearl was like that once. Sad that he lost that. He had it made at UT and dupped on himself.

Once I found out Ernie Grunfeld suggested, I was all in.

WOW! Didn't know that.

This guy just got the golden ticket; went from 140k to 1.3m. On second thought; With the current conditions, he just got his cost of living increase.

It took all of about a day for our a bunch of fans to go from 'Dooley who?' to 'I like him and I think he's the right guy.' I assume UT fans all around will eventually be convinced Martin will have us in the final four within 5 years.

:lolabove: Good luck with that

Yes...It`s going to be funny watching so many try to climb back on the BANDWAGON at the same time!

Are we gonna have to wait five years?!:yikes:

No, but I hope he is successful, and proves all us doubters wrong. I'll gladly eat crow. I am a lifelong resident of the Great State of Tennesse, and a lifelong fan of the Volunteers. I have been burned enough in life to not buy in on face value alone. Dooley still hasn't proven himself yet. I will still support the coaches of the University, and not criticize this coach till he does things that should be criticized. You have to "earn" respect as I am certain that Coach Martin agrees. Go Vols!

My problem with this hire is that we are in the SEC and most of the players we get are from GA, AL, MS, TN etc in the south. This guy is a mid west guy and he has no pedigree in the south. I guess time will tell. I hope its a great hire. He does have one thing going for him when it come to getting talent to come to tennessee and thats i've been to the NBA and i know how to get there come to tennessee and i'll show you. other than that Go vols and Good luck Coach Zo.:loco:

Pearl had no pedigree in the south either. Most folks were quite pleased with his recruiting.

Why in the world does this matter?

For the record:

Coach K is from Chicago,
Dean Smith is from Kansas,
Pearl is from Massachusetts,

im sure the list goes on....why does it matter if hes a "mid west guy"?

People on this board over-analyze the crap out of everything. DOES NOT MATTER.

It's not that people don't like the hire, I think the feeling there were more proven coaches available who would have accepted the position.

You can't help but like the hire, classy but hard nosed guy. It was not what many were expecting. I don't think its fair to expect a coach with 3 years experience to immediately compete with UK or UF? I am sure he will be successful but how long will the learning curve take? I was thinking we might slip for a year then be right back in the mix. This hire looks solid but he will need time to grow.

1. Little track record.
2. Not known as a recruiter.
3. Expressly does not want the kind of recruits with NBA-caliber talent since he wants 3-4 year recruits with character. See how far that gets you in the tourney.
4. What little track record he has shows a good home coach, a weak road coach, and no NCAA tourney success.
5. The coaching tree he comes from has a history of comparable results -- strong home record, weak road record, iffy recruiting, and sub-par post-season NCAA performance.

He's likely a good guy, unlikely to cheat, and will put up something better than Wade Houston or Buzz, but I don't expect much better, and anticipate mostly mid-level seasons with low-level NCAA tourney success.

As PJ said, CCM didn't say anything about not wanting NBA talent.

As for the 3-4 yr kids, seems to be working out for VCU and Butler this year, and Butler and Duke last year.

He never specified that, and besides, have you cared to take a look at the kind of teams that have populated the Final Four the last few years?

Good teams with solid talent will trump great individual ballers waiting on their NBA paychecks nearly every time.

1. I think it's very fair to expect him to compete with UK and UF, UT doesn't need a learning curve coach.

2. If he is not highly successful in 3-4 years he will be canned I can assure you there.

3. Forget all learning curves here, if ZO needs a learning curve then we picked the wrong coach.

that's not what he said

He said he wanted 3-4 year guys, and expressly noted he preferred that to top-10 one-and-done guys. How many NBA-caliber recruits are interested in 3-4 years in college? There's a reason why the Duke m.o. has rarely worked outside of Duke.

Yes, and the #1 most common aspect of a Final-4 team is NBA-caliber talent. This year is the anomaly, not the norm, and even so, Kentucky and UConn are both NBA-oriented recruiting machines.

And rarely works for everybody else.

Actually, Butler last year was led by a sophomore NBA player, and a sophomore guard, while few schools have imitated Duke with any success.

As for Purdue imitators/Keady-tree coaches, here's the # of Final-4 Appearances in their collective experiences at BCS programs with their own recruits:

Keady (0-for-20; also terrible in the one-and-done era)
Lavin (0-for-6)
Weber (0-for-6, only made it with Bill Self's recruits)
Stallings (0-for-10)
Painter (0-for-4)

That's a collective 0-for-46 at BCS programs making the Final 4 with a Keady protege at the helm.
