Do you want Bama to win just because they're in the SEC?

Does DeMarco Cobbs ring a bell? Texas took him from us, didn't they?

We rarely compete against Texas for recruits. We compete against Florida and Alabama and Georgia and LSU everyday.

And who knows what he was thinking, decommitting from a school with a then-losing record and switching to a team with a shot to a win a national championship? Doesn't he know that Tennessee is in the SEC? and that other SEC teams have won the last three NCs? I can't imagine why he didn't want to stick with us.

You can argue the fact all day and all night, but the people out there recruiting, including CLK and his staff, know that the stronger the SEC is, the better our recruiting chances nationally are. The bowl games are the last thing most recruits see before making their decisions. And ESPN makes it a point each year to break down how each conference as a whole does in their bowl games respectively. If it comes to going heads up against the team in question(i.e. Bama or UF) their NC may help them or hurt them against us. Some kids will look at Bama and say, they just won the NC, they are so deep, I won't get to play for a year or two. But when it comes to us going head to head against Oregon, USC, etc., an SEC NC helps us, period. Some will say we don't have to worry about Oregon, etc, but if you look at the top 150 recruits, you see USC and Oregon on their top 5 quite a bit. No, I am never gonna be a Bama fan. I am 42 years old and have seen some of the longest Bama streaks against us and hate them worse than UF or anyone else, but when it comes bowl season, I am an SEC fan. I want Bama to beat Texas and everyone else they play, so we can be the ones to take down the defending National Champions, their undefeated qb, and more than likely end the nation's longest winning streak when they come to Neyland next year. Now, if you can't see that when that happens, it boosts our recruiting strength, you are being extremely nearsighted. It will be much better than beating the team that always chokes in the bowl. If that happens, we are just another team that beat them.

You may think I'm nearsighted, but I think you're living in a fantasyland. If Alabama wins next month, there's going to be a media orgy about the dynasty Saban is buildling in Tuscaloosa. There's going to be chatter on ESPN about how he's the first coach ever to win a national championship at two schools, and does that mean he needs to go in the conversation about greatest college coaches ever? "The scary thing is that they might be even better next year!" Herbstreit will tell America breathlessly, and Saban will be selling recruits a vision of the USC-style dynasty he's going to be building. If you think any of that is good for Tennessee, or will help us in all the head-to-head recruiting battles we'll be in against Alabama, you're insane.

Considering the SEC's won the last 3 NCs, would Alabama winning or losing this one really change the conference's reputation that much? I could see maybe if people were doggin the SEC like they do the Big Ten, but that's not the case at all. I also don't understand how many of yall are okay with our biggest rival having another championship to brag about.

So, you indeed don't think us beating an undefeated defending National Champion team (with a qb who has never lost a High School or college game) carrying probably the nations longest winning streak will help our recruiting? OK

I'm not gonna hope they win a NC now just so we can possibly beat them next year. Beating our rival, who will likely be very good next year, is always going to help with recruiting regardless of whether or not they're coming off a NC season.

Alabama winning the NC will not gain us recruits. If anything it puts them on an even higher pedistal, than they already are.

I think that rooting for them to win a championship and garner a guaranteed huge boost to recruiting -- right now -- in the hope that maybe they'll be undefeated next year when we play them, and maybe we'll win, and maybe we'll get a big boost in recruiting next year from it, is a fool's wager.

...then why in the world would I root for a team that I detest to win a championship?

I enjoy the intellectual debate, and I may be completely wrong on the impact on recruiting. But I think we really are just trying to rationalize our gut feelings toward Bama. It ultimately comes down to this - you either view them as a mortal enemy or a fierce yet respectful rival. I live this debate every day here b/t Duke and UNC. And most fans here would take your POV.

I have too many friends and family who are Bama fans. I have next to no friends who are Texas fans. I'd rather have the support of my Bama friends if Tennessee were playing for the NC one day. Thus, I root for Bama in this one, and it's an easy decision.

They said the same thing about FLA last year.:)

Not as much as the BCS trophy is going to help Bama's recruiting. And for every one player we're trying to wrestle from the Longhorns, there are 8 that both UT and Bama are pursuing.

Fair enough. I also think it would be a reasonable argument for someone to say that he's rooting for Alabama just because he supports the conference, in a let-us-put-aside-our-differences-and-show-everybody-else sort of way. But I think that to rationalize it by claiming that there is some actual benefit to Tennessee if Florida and Alabama win championships is just silly. Urban Meyer's two rings don't help Lane Kiffin convince any recruits to come to Knoxville. Nick Saban's soon-to-be two rings aren't going to make Ed Orgeron's job any easier.

Gotta go with the "Horns". Heck they"ve already got "S" The Coach selling Ford trucks. If they win it all he"ll be running for president. Screw the "Tide" and all they do and ever have and ever will stand for......Go Vols....................

And how can anybody view Alabama as a "respectful rival"? When they sing "We just beat the hell out of you!" becauase our kicker couldn't clear their fat guy's gut, there's nothing respectful about them. They're vermin. Hook 'em Horns.

(And I detest Texas.)

Definitely want Alabama to win to represent the SEC. The big 12, big 10, fans hate the SEC and are in denial of its dominance.

I used to feel that way, living in Big 10 country. However, the Big 10 makes such a pathetic case that I'm not bothered by them.

Texas winning rewards their candy-ass schedule. Plus, I'll have to hear their fans crow about another NC and superiority over the SEC.

I'll take 'bama.

Ouch, that hurt.
