Do you want Tennessee to make the NCAA Tournament?

I vote no. Martin is mediocre. If he gets to the tourney, he'll be a lame duck next year. That's terrible for recruiting. So, we'll basically be forfeiting 2 seasons if we bring him back. Not going to the tourney looks like the only path to getting rid of him. So, we need to lose.

What happens when we don't make the tournament and Martin is extended? Then what?

Green's was primarily. He had a talented roster, but the program was clearly headed in the wrong direction. His players didn't play hard, and his recruiting was in the toilet. He was also a jerk and not well-liked by the fans, but that's not what got him fired.

It was his comment about the fans and Kmart that got him fired. If he kept the mouth shut, he would've been kept longer. So, no, it wasn't because of his win-loss record. Nothing can say he wouldn't have been fired the next year or two for that reason, but at the time it had nothing to do with the court results.

That statement may have contributed, but if he goes deep in the tourney, he keeps his job. Instead, they struggled down the stretch and lost in the 1st round to a mediocre UNCC team. His firing was bball related, w/ his personality and poor choice of words being contributing factors.

He was fired for pissing off the rednecks with his Walmart comment.

Or the opposite, why are people so convinced that Martin is gone if UT doesn't make the tourney?

Because Hart made it pretty clear that he expects us to make the NCAA Tourney. Just like the bowl game with Dooley, Hart expects us to make a bowl and the tourney.

If we don't make the tourney, it's a safer bet that Martin will be gone.

Green was nearing the end of the road for using O'Neill's recruits and was in dereliction of duty in a whole host of aspects as a coach. He made exactly 4 recruiting visits his last season and came up with a horrid recruiting class that included Andy Ikeakor as one of the signees. He also has zero control of his team. The fact that he had shills on ESPN vouching for him made me realize what empty talking heads most of those guys were.

ok, revisionist history wins the day. Answer me this, if they went to the sweet 16, would he have been fired?

If he did not make the Sweet 16, but did not make the comment, would he have been fired? If you say yes, why wasn't Pearl fired after his one and done with a much better team than that last one of Green's?

Yet again, nothing says he would not have been fired the year or two after for those very reasons. But, he was fired after 4 straight NCAA trips, the best at the time in UT history. It wasn't for the on the court issues at that point.

Not sure I follow your question, but he would have been fired if he did not make the tourney, just like he was fired after making the tourney and losing in the 1st round. Bruce made it to the 2nd round the following year. Not sure what the point is, but UT isn't firing anyone after their 1st season if they make the tourney and win a 1st round game. Keep in mind. I'm not saying it was right or wrong to fire JG, just that his firing was due to failure to live up to expectations, not simply because of his silly statement.

Devoe went to 5 straight previously

It was supposed to say not making the Sweet 16 and not making the comment. But, you just answered the question. Pearl made it to the 2nd round THE NEXT YEAR. He was given another year, despite underachieving, unlike Green.

huh? Pearl made the 2nd round in his 1st season, which followed 4 yrs of Buzz-ball, and no tourneys

Its not a given this dude is a goner after missing the NCAA Tournament. Stranger things have happend in the tournament so I'm all for going and maybe winning the whole thing. It could happen. It's all about matchups, locations ect...

Virginia and Vandy shows us that we are capable of winning the whole thing. I understand we aren't consistent and it's 99% chance we don't win and I still don't think we make the tournament but....it would be nice!

I understand the question now, despite the inaccuracies in your timeline. But honestly I think he would have been fired even w/out his Kmart comment. He had lost the fans before his comment. In fact, his comment was made in response to a question about fans not being happy w/ their effort/performance. Again, recruiting was tanking, several years of not living up to expectations, and a guy who nobody liked. Not a good recipe for a long tenure.

I don't really think those two games are any indication that we could win it all. While we have consistently been up and down, Virginia has consistently gotten better. We should've beaten Vandy both games as bad as we did Saturday, considering they are starting walk-on guys.

I could see us getting to the NCAA Tourney and firing Martin, it's clear that he's not going to get this team to really play to their potential.

Safer bet? Maybe. But it's not the sure thing some people are making it out to be.

IMO, if we make the tourney the only way they fire CM is if they have already worked a deal out w/ Bruce. No way they want to go into a coaching search w/ Bruce sitting out there if they know they aren't hiring him.

Agreed, if we make the tourney, and with this team that's a big if, you don't fire Martin unless you either have Pearl or Marshall for sure coming to UT.

If you don't, give Martin another year, and a one year extension and see what happens. What you can't do is give him a long extension with an increased buyout. That would be dumbest thing the AD could do.

Absolutely. And I think that Martin should still be fired barring a sweet 16 appearance. He's had 3 years and teams capable of making the tourney....and he hasn't.

The team has not been good either year he has been in Tennessee. I think it's a combination of both his style and a lack of talent
