Doak Walker…Sampson Not a Finalist

First of all (in answer to your "first of all" statement): what in the world does Tennessee's performance have to do with expressing an opinion in an ongoing discussion about Jeanty. "Ignorance"? That just means lack of knowledge on the subject. I'm not sure how UT losing could in any way indicate "ignorance" on a topic not related to the loss.

Secondly: this was his first game against a good SEC-level defense, and he averaged 3.5 yards a carry. Hardly Barry Sanders level. (Oregon's run defense was 66th in the country in yards per carry against, so, not comparable to playing an SEC nor Big Ten schedule.)

He's a good back, but is over-hyped. Even in this game, the announcers kept telling us how he was always on the verge of exploding, even though he wasn't. It reminded me of when Keith Jackson kept telling us that Tennessee couldn't shut down Testaverde and Miami, while we continued to shut them down.
The SEC wasn’t good this year. This is the worst the SEC has looked in over 20 years. This idea that “he can’t do that in the SEC” is farcical. His stats would suffer some, but not so much that he wouldn’t be great. If you took 1000 yards away from him with a more difficult schedule, he still would have had a phenomenal, All American type of year.

The truth is Dylan Sampson is not a dynamic RB. He's a blue collar, work horse type of RB and hey, I LOVE those types of backs! Cedric Houston was that type of running back for us and he's one of my all-time favorite RB's to ever play here! But for awards such as this, they are looking for the dynamic, highlight reel guys and that's not who Sampson is and it doesn't seem like Huepel is interested in recruiting those types of backs.

You're also forgetting in the SEC he would have competent pieces around him to make his opportunities easier. I love D. Sampson.. but Jeantry is hands down the best RB in college football this year and the SEC has looked very weak this year as well.
There's definitely some weird anti-bias with Jeanty. As you say if you're going to make an SEC comparison you have to put him behind an SEC (or at least a P4 something) line. PennSt's defense showed up with one simple objective, contain Jeanty and we win. This one dimensional approach was made even easier as PSt was simply waaaaay better from a personnel standpoint. Before the game even started I'd posted if I was PSt I'd go all in on stopping Jeanty and dare them to throw. It's what they did and while it meant Madsen had 300+ he also 3 int. I saw something where Jeanty had like 19 broken tackles in that game and the avg yards before contact was something hilarious...like .6 or something.

I actually had a LOL moment when they showed the replay of the Boise TD the fullback scored. When Jeanty started out to the L 3 (3!) defenders split out with him. Dude didn't have the ball and they had 3 dudes tracking him. It was the right game plan but to have people come in after the fact and use it to dunk on Jeanty doesn't make sense to me.

IDK man...Sampson came to UT with absolutely vetted track times. I'm curious to see what the combine shows us.

I think Sampson is plenty fast, but he didn’t bust huge gains very often. Not sure his track speed fully translates to the field in that way. Wasn’t the home run threat that Wright was, but I felt like Sampson had better vision and agility and was a tougher runner than Wright.

Don’t know much about football do you?
3.5 yards per carry, zero TD, 2 fumbles (1 lost) is showing out to you? Doak Walker winner should do better than that. Didn’t even score a TD either. That was a pretty pathetic performance for someone that was talked about like Barry Sanders in this thread. It’s a damn joke and he will not be that great in the league.

What's funny is many of us before the season wasn't sure Sampson could be that every down power back.

You’re saying he did show out right?

I think he’s a great RB, hands down the best like you said idk. I would love to see what he would’ve done vs sec competition weekly.
SEC isnt even the best conference this year if we are being honest. With a competent QB he would have likely broken Sanders record.. also my last reply was very rude. I apologize for that.
