Does anybody else miss Bruce Pearl?

In all honesty, Maymon looked like garbage in the time he did receive last year. His decision-making was questionable at best. He shot the ball nearly every time he touched it and was less than accurate.

He needed to prove he should've been playing over Steven. I'm sure CCM has helped develop him, but the fact that Steven played over him tells me all I need to know about Bruce's motives last year. The Kansas win was one of the worst things that happened to us. It gave Bruce ammo to support playing Steven and Skylar as much as he did, while Maymon, Golden and McRae saw limited minutes. Those three guys may have been a bit overrated coming out of HS, but there's no doubt they're all better players than Steven and Skylar.

We do have real scorers on offense Maymom and stokes can get 10 to 15 a game easy.

Now our young guys such as Golden and McRae are getting there. I think they could be great.

I believe richardson will be a great 10 to 18 foot scorer, but anything beyond that is up in the air.

Well, that's exactly what I meant. There are pieces and parts and potential. But I don't know how the hell you build a consistent offense out of that.

Maymon is the closest thing we have to a consistent scorer, and basically all he is is an overwhelming physical force without much of a scorer's touch. Stokes is clearly going to be the real deal but he's not there yet. There's literally nobody else on the team that can score consistently.

And yet Martin is going to finish with a better conference record this year than Pearl did last year with Harris and Hopson. I'd say that's a hell of a start.

No, I don't miss Bruce Pearl.

I appreciate that he turned our program around and made it to the NCAA Tournament every year he was here. I appreciate that he changed the culture around UT basketball and that he made us relevant.

I don't appreciate that he nearly destroyed everything he had built by cutting corners that didn't need to be cut. I don't appreciate that he embarrassed UT and got our program hauled before the Infractions Committee, nor do I appreciate the mess he left for Cuonzo Martin to clean up.

I wish him the best if he returns to coaching after he serves his time in the NCAA slammer. Except if he ever faces the Vols, in which case I hope he gets his head handed to him.

We have another coach now, and I am very happy with him. Bruce Pearl is old news.

Pearl was all Hype and tried to use his charisma to replace his inability to coach under pressure. Glad the damn cheater is gone. Good riddance.

He took a team that was projected to finish 11th and has a chance to tie for 2nd.

Maymon has become a 1st team All SEC player under him. Trae has improved immensely. He got Jordan McRae to buy in mid year.

This team has shown incredible improvement from December when they bought in.

His recruiting for 2013 is looking really good. He's in on a ton of good players.

He improved MO State from 11 wins to tourney champs in two years.
I love his always positive attitude. I love his defense first attitude. His offensive sets are looking better.

To be honest, there's not a lot to dislike.

He did not win the conference tourny at Missouri State.
CCM is our coach now and this is a new start. Hope it works out.

My sentiments exactly.

With the SEC and NCAA tourney's just ahead, it's disappointing that we don't have Bruce Pearl at the helm. If Pearl had stayed we would have had Scotty Hopson, and he would have been a factor. While Coach Martin is doing his best ... it just isn't the same.

The fact that you believe this makes me sad. And I figure you are no older than 17.

And Scotty would have stayed? WHAT?! Did you watch Scotty Hopson "play" basketball last season? He looked real interested didn't he?

I would be interested to see what Scotty would have looked like under CCM.

Scotty had more talent in his pinky than most do, but he seemed like a spoiled rotten brat many games. Pouting when something didn't go his way. It looked like he thought every shot he made should have went in a lot of times. It don't work that way.

If he had truly lived up to his potential, he could (and I stress could) have potentially left UT as the best to have ever played on the hill. I know that's saying a lot, but the kid had unbelievable skills. He was just very inconsistent in using them. HAnd he killed me sometimes with his dribbling.

Great post.

GBO!!!!

too many circumstances for last year. if BP didn't have the investigation looming, we would have been a much better team last year and we don't lose to michigan. Things would be different this year. Yet CM has done some good stuff with these guys given the circumstances, we get some more talent for next year and we're in the tourny

I miss Bruce for a lot of reasons, mostly because he is a real character and a ton of fun. I wish he had a regular gig on tv. Maybe next year.

I also miss Ray Mears.

But as to the original question - yeah, I miss BP. Of course the rest of the OP's sentiment about Hopson and Coach Martin is pure crap.

Yep. I think I've seen enough to be confident that, as a basketball coach, Martin is an upgrade. The movement on offense. The effort on defense. Remember last year when the announcer said he couldn't tell whether we were playing man or zone because we weren't moving around enough? You'd expect Martin to have a higher ceiling as a basketball coach, given that he started out as a tough as nails player and Bruce started out in a mascot's costume. I don't even mean that as a shot at Pearl; it's just the truth. Pearl's exactly what this program needed a few years ago, but his limitations as an actual coach became apparent awhile ago. Now we need a basketball coach. And Martin looks like he's got a shot to be a good one.

A lot of people are going to hold it against him for a long time that he came from Missouri State. I think that's largely a Dooley-driven backlash, and I can't say that I blame them. Martin's not going to get the benefit of the doubt. But if he can recruit at all, he won't need it.

You're exactly right. The thing is, he was probably never going to b fired due to his performance. How crazy would it be took look back in 10 years and consider the situation that got Pearl forced out to be a lucky break?

You are correct. I meant regular season conference champs.

My apologies. :hi:

It definitely has that feel, doesn't it? Pearl would never have been fired here for basketball reasons IMO. Yet with Pearl's stupidity, it might be the best thing for the program. I actually believe Martin's exactly what the program needed. It was a perfect storm almost.

I miss pearl and his personality but that being said he ruined his chances here. At first I didn't think Martin would work out but the team has clearly bought into his system. I'll take a team playing hard nose d any day of the week. I'm excited to see what the future holds with Martin. The biggest concern I have is his recruiting. We got stokes, but I think the relationship was built by pearl and martin finished it off. The other players he brought in are not so hot. I'm not sure if he took them bc he had to for roster reasons or if he thinks there talented players

This is just a stupid thread.

It's not like he was fired because of his W/L record, he was fired because it had to be done. Do I wish he had never done those things, yes, but he did and that's reality. If we had kept him, we'd be garbage for several years because of the punishments given to him.

As far as the Michigan game being an "anamoly" last year, apparently you didn't watch the whole season.

In that case, this is just a stupid post.

It's a legitimate question. Bruce revived UT basketball.

I am still amazed at how people who come across as a huge idiot can figure out how to work a computer. OP must of had help from a parent on how to post a thread.

All I'm really doing is reflecting on Pearl's excellent post-season record. He got us as far as the elite eight for crying out loud. Can Martin do that? We'll see.

Honestly no. Cuonzo at this point looks like an upgrade at every angle. Guys who couldn't play jack last season are looking like great basketball players (McBee, Woolridge etc) Thats all because of the toughness and work ethic that CCM has intsilled in our program. Pearl did nothing for character on our teams either. Cuonzo will turn our program around and soon prove to be greater than Pearl. My money is on CCM staying here much longer than Pearl did. :hi:
