Does Jalen Hurd Seem a Bit Too Tall For a Tailback?

His offer list speaks for itself, much better than any back we have recruited in a long time. His offer list harkens back to Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, and Travis Stephens. No offense to Rajion Neal, Lane, and Poole but their offer lists pale in comparison to his. Even Lamarcus Coker, who was a 5* back had a very average offer list due to his off the field issues. Recruiting services miss on prospects often, but rarely does every major program miss on a prospect.

Yea he's too tall and isn't a good running back. We should get a back that's 5'7 since that's all that matters. Smh. We get a damn good rb finally that is rated one of the best players in the country rated a 5* broke tennessee high school records totally bought into this staff and he's not good enough for some of our fans bc he's got a big frame. Hahaha! I say we recruit short 2 and 3 star caliber backs!

Well since you are sure about changing positions for folks . I feel YOU should stand up like a MAN and all . Lets see if Jalen Hurd can run all over your AZZ . I mean Shirley . You can stop him Right ? E S and D .

ESPN has him listed at 6-4.

The tallest elite running back I can come up with is Eric Dickerson, who is 6-3.

Great! Because Dickerson was a stud runner....he could easily have owned the NFL rush record and maybe even Emmit would not have waddled past him in his old age, but Dickerson got bored and quit young.

I'll take a back like Dickerson ANY DAY!

Some of you guys need to get your "sarcasm" meter calibrated! Hurd is not too tall or to "lanky". He can either run the ball effectively or he can't. We'll all find out next fall. All this commentary about the kids stature is just nonsense. Maybe we need some threads on if Dobbs is too "intellectual" to be a good QB. Oh and before anyone mistakes me for a troll its called sarcasm. Smh...

Hurd's going to be that running back we've been needing for a long time. You know how Lane comes in the game and gets those tough yards? Yea, Hurd's going to be like that, but even better. Can't wait for him to get here next year.

He's 6'3" 225 or that's what he said on Ainges show and he runs a 4.3 40. I'd say the kid can play whatever he wants. He's pure talent.

If he could, would he be tall enough? Would he get a chance to get even a season of playing time before girls on VN bash him? I Know, he would be awesome ONLY if he wast a 4th string QB that didnt get reps so we could post...."lets put in Hurd, he's better than Worley and Dobbs"

I (LOL) on this one! I just don't see him playing TB in our offense.

He's not too tall but he may be too lanky. Does anyone remember any really good lanky running backs?

Lanky - ungracefully thin and tall.
synonyms: tall and thin, thin, slender, slim, lean, lank, skinny, spindly, scrawny, spare, bony, gangling, gangly, gawky, rangy

Kid weighs 230-235..... And if you've watched any of his highlights, there's no way you'd call him "ungraceful".

Wish to hell people would leave this topic alone. He was recruited to play rb at UT and that's what he's gonna do.....and very well IMO.

This all started when he committed...if he had gone Bama, OSU or even Vandy, all we'd be hearing on here is butthurt on how Butch can't recruit big time running backs like this :whatever:

Dead on Butch. I just can't understand people wanting to poke holes in the idea that UT has an elite 5 star running back coming to Knoxville....and he's needed desperately to play running back! Why in the world would anybody question if he can play rb for UT..... we don't need another safety, LB, DE, whatever...we need a 6'3" 230lb rb who runs 4.37 running the football....

I think Vandy trolls started this crap. I understand he's an EE and folks will very soon get some glimpses of what he can do carrying the football. I know he'll only be a freshman and there are some positions where a freshman can rarely hold their own. But running back is not one of them, if the kid is big and fast.

Sarcasm: the "exclusive literary weapon of choice for weak-minded journalists such as John Adams and David Climer." I presume that you possess more self-respect than to lump yourself in their category.

Exactly. Todd Gurley comes to mind immediately.

ESPN has him listed at 6-4. I'm trying to think of an elite tailback who was that tall and I'm drawing a blank. I'm not saying that an elite 6-4 tailback is outside the realm of possibility, but I definitely think there's a reason the average height of running backs in the NFL is 5-9; namely, a lower center of gravity allows for quicker changes in direction, which is something running backs have to do.

The tallest elite running back I can come up with is Eric Dickerson, who is 6-3. So it isn't impossible, but he's definitely the exception. And he was also just a uniquely talented player.

Am I overthinking this? Is Hurd definitely going to be a stud?

I do wonder about that. It helps to have a smaller RB with a lower center of gravity and who is hard to see behind the line of scrimmage. That was the main thing I was thinking about; if the RB is as tall or taller than your O-line, isn't it easier for the LB's to pick him up in the backfield. That being said, I can't deny his talent and I hope he tears it up in the orange and white
