Does Jalen Hurd Seem a Bit Too Tall For a Tailback?

So he's tall. So he can run. So he can break tackles. But can he direct the Pride of the Southland Band?

Eric Westmoreland who talks to one of the Chattanooga Times Free Press beat writers a lot, says that he really thinks Hurd will be a LB when he gets to K-town because he is too tall and his side to side speed is realy good. He says that is what happened with the likes of Westmorland who was a RB and two others he mentioned that Fulmer developed into a LB, I think it was Little or Wilson, but not sure on their HS position.

Adrian is 6'2. Eric 6'2, Herschel 6'1, chuck muncey 6'3. Marcus Allen 6'2. Fred Taylor 6'1...
Everybody on here must be too young to remember when Jim Brown played during the late 50's to mid 60's. He was one of, if not the best , running backs ever. He was 6'2" and 230-235 lbs. Back then, he was considered huge .

Leave it to VN(1998 expectation)... to question a 5 star RB's possible impact. WOW....

Can Jalen Hurd also play qb???

If he could, would he be tall enough? Would he get a chance to get even a season of playing time before girls on VN bash him? I Know, he would be awesome ONLY if he wast a 4th string QB that didnt get reps so we could post...."lets put in Hurd, he's better than Worley and Dobbs"

Good Lord...He IS a RB and a heluva one at that...Eddie George type, style....

If you haven't seen Jalen play in person, just wait!

This OP beat me to it, exactly the example I was going to cite. I can recall as a kid watching Jim Brown on tv slowly make it back to the huddle like he could barely walk, then take the next handoff and run over Dick Butkus or Ray Nitschke like they weren't even there. Anybody recall hearing about Larry Csonka or Earl Campbell being to big or tall to be NFL RBs, much less NCAA?? There is no such thing as to big or tall to be a RB in the NFL much less the NCAA IMO.

There is no such thing as to tall if you have the right fundamentals. You can be 6'4 but play at 6'. It's all technique. If he gets good coaching he will be great. My concern is his leverage, if he runs at 6' he could be a monster. At his size you don't need great speed, just manageable speed.

I say he plays running back since that is his position.. No need to think about him changing positions before he has even played a game for the Vols.

You are exactly right about Brown acting like he could barely make it to the huddle, then running over people like they weren't there. However, he never ran over Butkus because they never played against each other. In 1965, Butkus came in the league and Brown left. Cleveland and Chicago did not play each other that year.

He more than likely did run over Nitschke though. Even though Nitschke was one of the toughest, meanest men ever to put on a uniform, Brown was a load to bring down, and was probably bigger than most linebackers, including Nitschke. I would have loved to see Brown and Butkus hit head on, because Butkus was bigger and as strong and mean as they came. That was some real football back then. There weren't very many rules to protect from injury.
