Does Jalen Hurd Seem a Bit Too Tall For a Tailback?

The ideal size seems to be between 5'10" and 6'0" but doesn't mean he can's be a successful running back. I think he plays there hopefully he doesn't get any taller.

I hope that he does well, but it is a lot easier when you are bigger and faster than everyone else on the field. I am not sure that will be the case in college. Peterman looked unstoppable in high school too.

Exactly. Especially when the competition isn't that great. Heck I'd put TX 3A vs TN 5A or 6A. My concern isn't his size, as there is plenty of proof success at his size, but the fact that he hasn't played all season. Is he fresh..yes...which is good, but he also going to be rusty. So don't understand how much confidence can be put in that. Or how he is going to come in next year and face a brutal SEC schedule with killer success. Can it happen..sure, but putting it all in one basket until we actually see it is just premature. But of course premature is the description of a lot of the people on this site right?? Ha!!

Also, he has had shoulder surgery and coming into a brutal SEC after a year off isn't really smart for the future of the player imo. Some playing time is one thing, but let's see if this staff can get the best out of Lane and the new OL or is only needing to hide behind top talent to succeed.

I am hearing that he will me moved to Linebacker. This is one reason Darryl Williams decommited from ASU and is now coming to UT.

Not to try and slam you, but this can (and is) said about every D1 prospect coming out of high school.

All 5 star recruits are bigger and/or faster than everyone in HS.

This OP beat me to it, exactly the example I was going to cite. I can recall as a kid watching Jim Brown on tv slowly make it back to the huddle like he could barely walk, then take the next handoff and run over Dick Butkus or Ray Nitschke like they weren't even there. Anybody recall hearing about Larry Csonka or Earl Campbell being to big or tall to be NFL RBs, much less NCAA?? There is no such thing as to big or tall to be a RB in the NFL much less the NCAA IMO.

One of the reasons why some posters think he my be too tall is they are too young to have seen most of the truly good big backs. Bigger back are almost impossible to stop when they have the speed and quickness of Hurd. He will be one of the all time outstanding running backs in the the SEC and College football.

Jalen Hurd could be another John "The Diesel" Riggins
Look up John Riggins. He was primarily used as a full back in the NFL till he got the opportunity to be a great tail back.
Riggo - had 14 year career in NFL.
Size 6'-2" 230 lbs, Sprinter Speed (100 meter state champion), Powerful runner = 1st round pick in NFL Money!

If Hurd had a straight up running style, I would say he probably is too tall. But he doesnt run straight up. He gets behind his pads very well, has very quick and light feet and can turn on the speed in open field.

I think in this offense he will be a load to stop.

I'm not sure size is much of an indicator of a players future success when right now there's a man 5' 6" tall scoring touchdowns in the nfl.

Yea teams tend to do better with just one running back, why don't you ask Saban about that.

He's not too tall but he may be too lanky. Does anyone remember any really good lanky running backs?

Somebody put up a more recent pic of Jalen in uniform, up for this poor guy :eek:hmy:

I'm not worried about his height at all. I am a little worried about how he fits in Butch Jones' offense. From watching his tape, he looks like an ideal "one cut and go" runner. I'm not sure how he works in an offense where we keep trying to run around the edge.

Run around the edge? Most of our run plays this year were run between the tackles or off tackle.

Now that I think of it, Neal's 4th and 1 pitch against UGA is the only run around the edge I can remember from all season.

For you young whippersnappers who are too young to remember him, Butkus was the most brutal tackler to ever walk on two legs. Take a look at these film clips: Hall of Famer Dick Butkus Highlight Reel - YouTube, Top Ten Most Feared Tacklers: #1 Dick Butkus - YouTube and Dick Butkus highlights HD - YouTube.

I remember Jim Brown less clearly, but, to this day, he is still the best running back that I ever saw. At 6-2, 228 lbs., he was the first NFL running back to combine size, speed and power. Hurd's almost 100% healed. He could have played this season, but the family was just being precautionary.

He'll have all spring to prepare.
