Does Jalen Hurd Seem a Bit Too Tall For a Tailback?

As long as he stays committed to UT his height is not a problem!!
If he were to ever flip or transfer then he would be too tall, and will eventually be crushed by the Berry twins.
You are correct not many tailbacks have ever been that tall. I hope he is a 1 percenter and makes a difference.

He's a much better athlete than Eddie George. George was a powerful, yet slow plodding 3 yds and a cloud of dust guy. Jalen has great size like Eddie, but he has elite speed, 4.37 speed and great burst. George had neither.

1985 Heisman trophy winner.
Only 27 NFL players have ever rushed for 10,000 yards.
NFL career:
Career NFL statistics
Rushing yards 10,441
Average 3.6
Touchdowns 78

JAMAL LEWIS is #21 on list of all time rushers. WOW. I did not have a clue he run for that many yards. WOW again.

Because his height may realistically determine just how good of a back he will be, thus the entire point of this thread.

If he is really a legitimate 6'4 then history is strongly working against him. To be completely honest; RB's are overrated and it should not be hard to find an impact RB in the South; if this kid is really as athletic as implied, why not play him at LB where you could have a potentially elite NFL player?

Recommend you read through his thread, watch his highlights, even google his name and do some research. Also, he's one of the top running backs in the country and the top player in the state while playing running back. UT desperately needs a running back. He was wants to play running back and was recruited by UT and just about everybody else as a running back. In my mind, that's why.

If after a year or 2 he puts on a lot of weight, Tennessee has recruited very well at the RB position and the coaches need him at another position we might see him play somewhere other than RB. But that's the only way. Kid is special and committed to being an RB at this point.

Oh God let's all cry about getting a 5 star player and say he can't be a tailback! The way UT has recruited before Jones you would think people would be happy about a tailback of Hurds talent.

Danny Woodhead is too short to be on an NFL team.

FEAR the WRATH of the ANGRY MIDGET!!!!!

And has had a pretty solid NFL career.

He's had a pretty solid career as a specialist; albeit the hits he couldn't avoid (largely due to his size) meant his peak lasted only a few seasons.

Now how would his NFL career have fared had a decided to switch to say LB, or even DE? 6'4 265+ with ~4.55 speed. He had the physical attributes to be an absolutely devastating defensive player.

I'm personally ecstatic, just like I was when he committed back in March when I nearly ran off the road when I first heard. I don't get the constant refrain of he's too big to play RB. We should all be thrilled he's about to be our elitely talented tailback for the next 3 yrs.

Tennessee 3A is not quite the SEC.

Actually, it's 5A and they beat everyone that they played last year (including all of the 6A teams).

Jalen is not 6'4. When ESPN measured him, they measured him including his big thick faux hawk on the top of his head.

Thank GOD he's not actually 6'4! Hopefully only 6'2. Now maybe everyone will stop talking about his size and perhaps focus on the fact that UT is about to get one of the elite high school players in the country. Thanks 74...

Overthinking it.

What's going to matter is whether he has a burning desire and can stay healthy. If so, he'll be a big part of us getting back on top.

This is the silliest nonissue on Volnation...there's no guarantee that Jalen will be a star...but lots of bullet points in his favor...why do I think that if he had committed to Vandy, Fla or OSU that this height/frail thing would be viewed as sour grapes?

Last played in 1981. The game has changed a lot in over 30 years.

Stephen Jackson is 6'3", Brandon Jacobs is 6'4".... both currently on an NFL roster. Neither of which run sub 4.4. The Hall of Fame has several RBs 6'1"- 6'2". It's a good thing to have a big strong running back with great burst and sub 4.4 top end speed IMHO.

There have been plenty of ~6'3 height backs over the years who have been successful. I'm more concerned with how our offensive scheme will gel with Hurd (from what I've seen, he looks like an ideal one-cut runner, but I don't know how that will work with our desire to try to run around the edge all the time).

The way some folks on here talk, you would have wanted Michael Vick to be a DB. Also, just because a guy has size and speed, it doesn't mean he can simply be effective at any position. If a guy is a 5 star at a need position, let's just thank our lucky stars if we get him, rather than immediately advocating he play safety.

I thought Adrian Peterson was about 6'2 or 6'3 in college and then miraculously shrunk when he got to the NFL.

No disrespect to anyone on this thread, but I have been watching this kid play since he was young, and there is nothing that will keep him from being a RB. Yes he could play a number of positions and dominate, but this is what he's done since he was 5 years old and what he likes to do, so running the ball is what he WILL do.

Flat-footed he is anywhere between 6'2.75 - 6'3-2.5 tall. Yes, he's tall but most tall guys do not have the forward lean or lateral movement that he has. His defense is sick, and I think that he would have greater longevity on that side of the ball, but that is not where he wants to play.

The kid is just an absolute monster. The services can predict, rate him what they want, drop his star status due to his shoulder, etc. At the end of the day, none of that will matter. Volnation and the country will soon see the impact that he (as a freshmen) will bring to the team. He is relentless, and all he knows how to do is win.
