Better than people most of the time.

We got a small one too, wife is a small dog person, I'm a big dog person. We are thinking of getting a third.

Always suspicious about people who don't like dogs.

Ive got two rescues right now, and they've been nothing but loving and healthy. Beagle/jack russel and a coonhound/idk that looks identical to smoky. The little guy (beagle) picks on the big one, but they love each other.

Wow! Never seen one of those. Very nice. At my last house, one neighbor had a Weimaraner named Duchess. Very pretty dog in that gray type color...gorgeous blue eyes, soft smooth fur. She could jump about 8 feet high it seemed. They are high strung...(or, that one was anyway). My labs would chase her around for about ten minutes, then they would collapse.

Had two labs, black male and a choc female. Both were great family dogs and would not let strangers around my three daughters. The male was the best dog I have ever owned. We now have a male blue weimaraner that is the crazziest dog I have ever owned. I thout labs could be destructive as pups, but mine were mild compaired to the weimaraner. Weimaraners also have seperation anxiety and will cry and howl if they are seperated from their owners. Both dogs however are good with children of all ages.

Went camping this weekend with our German Shepherd. Never saw a Shepherd this crazy bout water, couldn't keep her out of the streams. Course the best thing is at night, having those hyper sensitive ears and nose. She alerted us to a coyote. She also was right on the hip of the kids at all times so we would know whenever they were getting into trouble.

Really hard to beat a Shepherd for fun and protection.

BTW, we picked up a mixed rat terrier from the pound 2 weeks ago. Small, about 10lbs at 8 months, but he came house trained, which was a nice surprise and he's quite a fun little dog. We consider ourselves very lucky at this point.

We have a rat terrier who is 11 years old (we've had her since she was 6 weeks or so - well my wife has, but we were dating at the time). She has been a great dog - but tends to have some alpha complexes. They are an incredibly socially sensitive breed. I've never seen a dog have its feelings get hurt as much as that one. This makes them very trainable - except we've never been able to train the "home protector" out of her.

This thread helped convince me to adopt a dog and I couldn't be more happy about my decision. Adopted 1 year ago today and we love our dog so much. Many thanks to kiddiedoc and the other users who suggested it.

I think you get far more gratification out of a dog you rescue or from the pound than you would a pure breed. And friends for life as well. I "rescued" my beast (she was a stray and on her last legs almost literally) and couldn't be happier these days.

She was about 20 pounds under what she is in this picture and had been abused and malnourished. The vet only gave her about a week so I said "we'll just see about that." Other than being scared of thunderstorms and not quite understanding why I get excited over football games, she's been a true companion for life and I wouldn't trade her for anything.

Thrilled to hear you adopted.

They know what you did for them. I don't know how, but the damn things know.

You made the right call! If you have no plans to show (or course...whatever) a rare pure breed animal then you are likely better off with a rescue.

I found this guy on the highway about 5-6 years ago with no tags. As you see, he's lived here ever since.

Absolutely the worst dog ever, but endearing. Couldnt imagine not having him around.
