As the owner of 2 rescue dogs, they have been nothing but great. The idea of damaged goods in a previous post can be truthful, but the rescue dogs I've been in contact with turn out to be the best. It's almost as if they can sense that you saved their life and they will show the love and loyalty in return tenfold. As with all dogs, it's crucial that you spend time with them in playing and training. Walking on a leash correctly is almost a must for at least a short time to get the dog to understand who is in control. You can't stop for the dog when he wants to stop and you have to control him when they want to chase after things. Stay at your pace and keep it that way. Keep treats on hand for training and when the dog does what you want, give it a treat. When it misbehaves, punishment. Hitting them will only make them scared of you, I use a squirt bottle myself. In whatever route you choose, rescue or puppy, know that it will take a lot of time in the beginning and still a good bit of time throughout. A good vet is also a plus. There are tons of bad and good ones out there so take your time picking. Enjoy your venture with a dog. Playing with my 2 boys when I get home is the highlight of my day when I get home. They are always happy to see me and always ready to play fetch and wrestle on the floor and very protective of my wife and I around strangers and great with kids. Once they see the strangers and I are friends or they aren't a threat, they treat them like family. I'll honestly never pay for another dog again, but have nothing against good breeders. It turns out both boys were chipped, purebred, and had papers. 1 was let go because he got too big, ended up at a foster house, and found us through a CL ad. The other we found tied up to a tree and in bad shape. Both have been absolutely wonderful.
*EDIT* Didn't read all the way through or dates. Congrats on adopting. You couldn't have made a better choice in making a lifelong friend
