Don't sleep on Brady Hoke & Michigan

Yeah, they weren't a top 10 program from 1995-2006. Don't be an idiot.

And making fun of Michigan's academics for football? Please. There better than a ton of other schools.

And a few years in the 70's/80's? If you are going to hate a team, please at least bring facts.

michigans football tradition is built of from what?

If your answer is anything but Bo Schembechler, then you dont know anything about michigan football.

I am assuming that you do know something, so Im assuming that we agree here.

Bo WAS michigan football in the 70s and 80s. When Bo left for the Tigers, the program stayed top 10, most of the time, but they were not the program that Bo left behind.

I think the michigan academics are superior to most schools, in a lot of ways. But there is proof out there, and I dont have to time to track it down, that they treat their football players different than the rest of their student body. Does that make them different than most schools? NO. So my suggestion is that they need to quit pretending that it does.

This guy is a michigan state alum? Explains A LOT
and a UF alum, and I have a kid who will be at UT in the fall.

yeah, i hate michigan with more passion than most of you could imagine. But when I drive around this little town, I see UT vanity plates, and then I see Bama, and Florida, and Georgia, and the list goes on. In the state of michigan, for the most part, you see michigan and michigan state.

When bowl games come around, SEC fans. . . almost all that I have ever known. . . are saying "I just want the SEC teams to win"

in the state of michigan there is "I just want the Big Ten teams to win, except for whoever is playing michigan" (or msu of course, depending on the side you are on)

yall can hate me all you want, I have a passion for my school, and plenty of fact to back it up, but seem to not have the time to sit here and play this game (life is busy right now, sorry)

My kid had 2 full scholly offers, One to Mich St, and one to UT. We put our collective heads together and chose UT, even though MSU was a lifelong dream. The academics at UT are very good, but for her program MSU would have been a notch above. Athletics are only part of the reason to pick a school. My kid will be at UT because it is only 2 hours from mom pop, lil sister, and lil brother.

Ok, back to letting yall hate on me again. . .

Everyone hates OSU. EVERYONE.

We will ALWAYS be in agreement on this one.

(I have really tried not to hate michigan. . . sigh. . . . but I just cant do it.)

BTW and FWIW: even though I am a uf alum, I have never been able to bring myself to hate on UT. One weekend every fall, but that is it. :hi:

Im not sure. Hoke's lack of experience might hurt him. It also could help him.

Time will tell. I dont hate Hoke. Kinda hard to hate a guy that looks like an average joe sports fan, and talks like one as well.

BUT, he is michigan. And he is letting his arrogance hang out a bit. Tough to deal with sometimes. Im a big fan of keeping mouths shut and letting the pads do that talking. But thats just me.

I hate MSU because they ended a 6 game winning streak I had and killed a $1400.00 3 team parlay last year by not covering the spread against a Purdue squad who had the brakes beat off them in the 3 previous games.
This is a valid point.

There have been saturdays in the fall where they make me hate football completely. Then about 12 hours later Im ready for toe to leather again.

EDIT: I would never EVER put money on MSU football in any form or fashion. It will never work out. I quit doing it 30 years ago. It will NEVER EVER workout. Over/Under, Margin of Victory, Total Points Scored, Straight up WIN/LOSS. NEVER EVER. Love that team. Will never bet another dime on them. Ever. (and did I say, EVER)

Ha. Trust me, Michigan fans really weren't that excited with Miles. Actually, we were optimisticly petrified.

my sources, and yes I have them, say that Hoke was somewhere around choice #4. There were a lot of things happening during that time, and um AD has already been caught in lies about it (Claiming Hoke was his first choice, but then Harbaugh came out and admitted to turning down a contract)

Anyways, the season will be interesting. I dont think michigan will ever drop off the national radar completely. But I honestly do not think it will be the same as it was in the Bo days, or even Lloyd Carr days.

Lloyd Carr himself said that michigan football was not the same after bo died. Bo did A LOT for that team after he retired. He still had an office in the football complex. he met with every important recruit as they came on campus. He was a HUGE figure in that program for years after he retired.

Lloyd had said that recruiting was never the same after. There was so much that Bo did that was then turned over to him. Made it a different job.

Then with Lloyd gone (and trust me, as a MSU fan, Im glad Lloyd stepped down. He is a good coach, and a better man.) It was much easier to recruit against and play against RichRod

Will have to see what Hoke can put up as a coach there. All coaches at michigan will be measured by the standards bo set, not by moeller, or lloyd, and especially not by richrod.

I'm about to head to bed.

But in all honesty, Dooley will achieve more than whats his face.

I hope you are right for 2 reasons:

1) Id love to see michigan fail. (not likely, but Id love to see it) 7-5ish every year would be awesome. Keep them competitive, but losing to MSU on a regular basis. (not an actual prediction, just on my wish list)

2) Id love to see UT back in the national spotlight again. And face it, right now you are on the edge of it. You are still UT, but you are similar to michigan in the fact that you need to get the wins back to be able to back up the reputation.

d) Id like for my kid to have a good experience for the next 8 years on campus. (pre-vet+vet school)

d.5 subsection a) Id love for florida to beat you while you are up!! :dance2:

OK seriously, I like the Dooley fella, I hope he does well.

They're recruiting just fine right now.

Most Michigan fans would much rather have Hoke than Carr at this point as well.

It looks pretty good right now.

In 2006 the were ranked 11th
2007 and 2009 they were ranked 19th
2008 they were ranked 13th

But that didnt help them much.

My biggest problem with recruiting rankings are this. (and this has nothing to do with michigan, or how I feel about them. Just a problem I have with the rankings)

Player's Star Rankings are moved up and down based on their college commitment.

A 4 Star that commits to Alabama will turn into a 5 Star by most services. If that same player went to Ol Miss, they would remain a 4 star. I understand why this happens (to a certain extent), but that doesnt make it right.

Im not saying it happens with every kid, or that it happens at every program, but I would rather wait and see how it plays out on the field.

I always use 2 examples:
Aaron Roberts: Prize Mich State recruit in early 80s. HS All-American, if they had stars back then he would have been a 5star. STUD Running Back. His very first carry (and I saw this one close up, in person) he came through the line and took a helmet to the chin. Knocked out a few teeth, put him out for a few games, and he was NEVER the player that anyone expected him to be. One or two good games in his career (thankfully, one against um in 1984 to help us win)

Kerwin Bell: Walk-On at UF. 4th or 5th string going into the first game of his redshirt freshman year. We all know what happened with Kerwin. Turned into a pretty good college QB.

If you were given the choice back then of Aaron Roberts, or Kerwin Bell, anyone in their right mind would have taken Aaron Roberts. Turned out different on the field.

michigan has built a nice class this year. but I will wait to applaud it until I see how it turns out on the field. (same with the rest of the schools, florida included)

Pretty sure he was talking about the 12-1 year at Ball State.

still not sure how he did that. Smoke and mirrors?

Hoke has a pretty good resume'. He turned some crap programs into winners. But he didnt spend a whole lot of time at either program.

Just his resume' as an assistant is pretty impressive. I just dont think it turns around real fast.

(im sure if he pulls out a win in E Lansing this year, yall will bump this thread and rip me a new one)

I should add, I think you are right about the Hoke -v- Carr thing, but that is probably misguided.

Anyone coaching there after bo died was going to have different results than before he died. As I said before, bo did a lot for that program after he retired. They have to rebuild a few things. And rich rod didnt help the process. :good!::good!:

Carr was a pretty good coach, a very good human being, and the first coach I have ever heard to blame a loss on the crown of the field. That is solid stuff right there.

(I still think UT would be better with Phil. Good dude. Might have lost his touch, I dont know. I wasnt exactly following UT football back then. . . and am forced to now for reasons posted above):cray:

Thanks to you for letting your daughter be a Lady Vol. Props to you, and to her, whichever her sport might be.

All I know about MSU is that Arnold Morgado used to be ahead of me in line at the cafeteria at Punahou, and OMG, he was a hunk. And he was one of the greatest HS players that we ever had.

(Oh yes, thank you, for all you weird homophobic types, I'm female. So we can skip the "no homo" stuff.)

YW. She will be a great academic addition to the campus. She is a great person as well. (trying not to be a parent when I say that, just some things are obvious)

If she makes the team as expected I will have to reveal who she is, (or at least the sport) but I dont want to put that pressure on her right now. And we are dealing with some ankle issues that might get in her way.

UT is a great school. I almost became a vol myself, as a freshman, but had too many ties to Uf already.

It kills her to not be at MSU, but she likes being near us. Her sister is headed to Nashville to make a living in the music business (hopefully) in a couple years, and she has a 3 year old brother that adores her. So going back to MI just doesnt work out for her.

Heading back to EL for a funeral this week. I miss the place but cant ever see moving back. Might have to start job hunting up in Knoxville, just to get out of this little hick town and back to some sort of real life!!

sorry to hijack the thread. back to everyone bashing me!! :dance2:

yes because we all know the AP poll is considered less valid than the usa today poll (or whatever the hell it is called now).

south carolina hasn't won anything. it's not even remotely saying the same thing.
As bad as writers can be, I'd take their vote every day of the week and twice on Sundays over a bunch of coaches who all admittedly either wing the vote or hand it off to an assistant to fill out.

Dream hire or not, Hoke is miles better than Les.

On paper, but I don't know how much clearer it could be that the football gods always have and always will smile on Les.
