Don't understand Daniel Hood starting...

Coaches watch film and every play. Could it be Couch takes a play off every now and again, where Hood gives 100% every snap he plays? You have to go with the professionals opinion here, the staff is getting paid and are doing what they think best to win, if that's Hood starting so be it. Heard that's the knock on Clowney for the 'Cocks, and sure enough, saw it with my own lying eyes this past Saturday every now and again.

If you watched any of the game, then you'd notice that Couch looked better in the game than Hood did...the tipped pass notwithstanding. And if you had watched any games the past few seasons, you'd see that Couch made a LOT more tackles than Hood. Hood had 7 tackles in 12 games last year. Couch had 38.

In the Austin Peay game Hood looked quicker and was more disruptive than Couch. The coaches said they are trying to create a pass rush from the front four so playing a guy that is leaner and quicker makes sense. As far as his weight goes remember Malik Jackson? He played dt at 270 and did just fine.

How is it any different than those who question whether the choice to go with Worley is the right one? Couch IS the better player. His ranking coming here bares that out...and his production since has done nothing to prove that to be wrong.

Even in the limited amount of playing time, in the AP game...he got a sack and had as many tackles as Hood did...with fewer snaps. I'm sure Coach Strip has his reasons, but Couch has 30+ lbs on Hood and his stats don't lie.

Yeah, you're on the Nuttin side of VolOrNuttin with this thread. Hood played well Saturday, had an outstanding camp and will contribute a lot to this team.... Couch did not have a great camp so Im assuming that's why he's not starting. But in the end it doesn't matter... both are gonna rotate and play a ton of snaps this year.

No problem questioning the move, just don't need the Hood and "Coaches don't know what they're doing" bashing.

sad thing is hood did more then big "mac" (as far as getting to the QB...but come on its the first game of the year...have to say i was pleased with what i saw from hood tho

Does it really matter at DL, you always play two deep. Couch will play the same as Hood. Maybe they want Couch in when Big Dan is out. In other words, they feel Hood is a better match with Dan most of the time. Make sense?

That was my thought, an averaging of the talent. 1&4 together and 2&3 together. less drop off from 1st to second team.

Come on, man. Are you seriously going to tell me you aren't concerned somewhat by having a guy who was a 2* recruit, moved from OL to DL for depth purposes...and has a whopping total of 17 tackles in 3yrs...starting at DT? Maybe the staff is trying to send a message to Couch. Who knows, but all I am saying is that it is one spot on the team that should have us concerned.

he was actually a 5.7 3*, and do you know the real reason why he was rated that low?

Favorite post, hands down.

tl;dr version:
Couch looked better than Hood
no, don't focus on the best play of the game
Couch looked better than Hood
See, I'm right.

Haven't read the entire thread but Couch has been banged up which has really limited his practice time. Believe he was in a boot just a few weeks ago. Hood has played a ton of minutes against SEC comp. He was 300 but lost 24 pounds of bad weight. He looks very fit.

I may be off a little on these facts, you can check. But I believe he was a 4* on at least one rating service, and had 30+ offers until the news leaked, then no one wanted him but Kiffin. (One good thing he did)

By the way "Nuttin" is an appropriate name for a vol basher, that thinks he knows more that the coaches. He obviously "Don't get IT"

Honestly I doubt that anyone who actually offered him a scholarship was unaware of the case. Like all you had to do was google his name and the court document popped up.

Looks to me like Hood might have took a few of your guys girls back in high school. The butt hurt is mighty strong :spank:

Hood played well and will be fine. You act like Couch is Sapp or Suh.

You couldn't google it until the case was made public, because he was a minor.

Maybe just a rotation issue... This is just a guess but maybe coach doesnt want to substatute and have couch and Mccullers out at the same time instead they have them split up so there won't be a big drop off in production when/if they were on the field at the same time and the 2nd team comes in and gets manhandled with our 2 biggest Dt needing a breather.. we may see some times when they do play at the same time , maybe goal line or other situations... Let me ask , would you rather big Mac and couch play at the same time and play really great while their in and then have 2nd team relief come in and get pushed around or would you rather couch and Mac be split up so that we're solid all game?

fair, but coaches look at star kids for years...there's no chance that the case, at least on some small level, wasn't common knowledge among recruiters

He has never outplayed Couch. Even as a backup with fewer snaps, Couch recorded a sack and had as many tackles as Hood.

That doesn't mean he's earning the right to start in practice. It's a little easier to turn it on in a game, then drag a$$ in practice. If Hood has earned the start, then he should start. Hopefully it sends a message to Couch....and others!
