Don't understand Daniel Hood starting...

next to Big Mac. At 277lbs, he is woefully undersized as a DT. I could see it if Hood had used all 4yrs to get all rocked up and over 300lb by this point....but he hasn't.

Mo Couch is much bigger and the better athlete. Has been since he got on campus.

Hood starting at DT reminds me of the woeful DT depth we had in 2011, where Wilcox HAD to play DE's because we struck out at DT recruiting for a few years, there. I'd play Saulsberry before Hood...even if he (Hood) made a few plays in the AP game.

When we get to Oregon, if Hood is still starting at DT, instead of Couch, it's going to show. I don't think there is a single NFL scout looking at Hood. But Couch is another matter. Just shaking my head at Coach Strip's decision.

Sure he's the coach and all. I get that. But from a fan's perspective, I cannot figure out, for the life of me, why you would start an undersized guy, who has been behind Couch in the depth chart until this fall. Strip said he hasn't seen Couch until fall camp. So? Big freakin deal. He's started here before and fall camp is plenty enough time to make an assessment. It has been for lots of freshman. Why not a Senior?

Is that you Mr. Couch?

It's called a rotation or a two deep for a reason. If the two are in any way playing at the same level you use their skill set to your advantage and establish depth. That way when we are going against the big maulers of bama etc. Hood goes out there and takes his shots and then you bring in Mo Couch to finish them off in a pass rushing situation hopefully on third down.

Have you ever watched a football game or know anything about how to build a roster? Anything about the sport for that matter?

I didn't feel like reading the whole thread, so it's probably been covered but rotation, rotation, rotation

This is situation that I can't figure out either. Mo could play in the NFL and we aren't even starting him.

Maybe he can play in the NFL but he hasn't played well enough to start over McCullers who, if you look at the depth chart released today, is who he's playing behind.... not Hood.

Couch IS the better player.

Even in the limited amount of playing time, in the AP game...he got a sack and had as many tackles as Hood did...with fewer snaps. I'm sure Coach Strip has his reasons, but Couch has 30+ lbs on Hood and his stats don't lie.

Here is what I, a defensive line coach, notice different about the two:
1. Hood is not near the athlete that couch is.
2. Hood understands the game and is a much better technical player than couch. He rushed half a man rather than a whole man, his angles are better, he does a good job of getting up and trying to bat balls, and he recognizes plays better (3 screens identified and destroyed). Hood actually uses his hands better than Couch does too. Couch just bulls around and plays hard, but he looks like he doesn't have a great grasp of the game.
3. A technically sound Couch could be an all conference player but he isn't and hasn't demonstrated a technical proficiency in three years here.
4. Both will have to play significant minutes this year and have significant strengths that will make us better.

That is my .02

Why do people come on here and pretend to know more than the coaches that see these players everyday? I've got an idea. Send your resume to the athletic dept. and see if you can straighten these rookie coaches out. I mean with your powers of observation and obvious ability to recognize talent then we will be winning titles in no time. NOW, STFU!

You don't understand the Under 4-3 front do you?

Big Dan plays the one gap as our NT, next to him in the three gap is the under tackle. An under tackle generally weighs somewhere around 280ish.

That explains why Couch is Dan's backup, since Couch weighs 300+

It's my understanding that they've been running McCullers/Couch in the three gap with our alignment, though.

Hood is extremely smart. He knows what every player on the defense needs to be doing on every play. I'm sure that helps toward him being the starter.

Just read the thread title. The reason the OP doesn't understand Hood starting is quite simple. He's not a coach and hasn't watched the practices.

Thread Summary: (1) OP can second guess coaches who's continued employment depends upon results on the field because this is a message board and as a member he can express any opinion he wishes.

(2) Anyone who disagrees with OP has no feeling in his testicles.

Did I miss anything?
I think you have it covered.

I have come to the conclusion that the individual behind this thread is none other than..wait for it......Mo Couch's wife.

You noticed the PMS characteristics in the prose also?....on this Hood/Couch scandal, I'm not the thinker that Kicking Bird...I mean Volornuttin is...I look at what's on the field...if it works, I don't complain. If a player is not getting it done, the coaches generally put the next one up...seems like said adjustments would stave off devastation

It has been said by this staff and previous coaching staffs that Hood plays with a lot of heart and he has a motor that never stops. Physical attributes are not always everything that matters. If he's out there giving it everything he's got on every play every single day, then I agree with Hood getting the start. It obviously showed in the game. He made some good plays. I don't understand why you're upset with Hood getting the start.

Wow. Coming off the mess we have had the past few years and a decent game where the players were excited and played hard as a team - and this is what someone wants us to chew on! We have much bigger issues to fix than whether Couch gets his 40 reps with the 1's vs. the 2's.

Check out the 42 points in the first half vs. 3 in the second and ponder on that one. Let's quit second guessing the coaches on BS issues that do nothing but generate negativity and let them worry about the big picture for crying out loud.

Watching the Butch Jones Show last night, Coach Strip said he needs 8 guys in the Rotation. Seems obvious most get it, but not the OP. You can fix broke, but you can't fix stupid. I going to let Coach Strip figure out who the 8 are and how they work best together as a unit.

I just want to know why volnuttin has been holding out on his practice updates? Seeing he has been at every practice evaluating who has performed the best. Come on man, don't hold out on us with all your inside information.

I believe this is the most useless thread in a while....starting means mostly nothing....both got ample playing time Saturday. Dan lost the weigh intentional....totally different defensive scheme....in this 4-3 you got to be able to move....I'll trust CBJ and Strip on this one....goodness...lets all take a deep breath....
