Don't understand Daniel Hood starting...

next to Big Mac. At 277lbs, he is woefully undersized as a DT. I could see it if Hood had used all 4yrs to get all rocked up and over 300lb by this point....but he hasn't.

Mo Couch is much bigger and the better athlete. Has been since he got on campus.

Hood starting at DT reminds me of the woeful DT depth we had in 2011, where Wilcox HAD to play DE's because we struck out at DT recruiting for a few years, there. I'd play Saulsberry before Hood...even if he (Hood) made a few plays in the AP game.

When we get to Oregon, if Hood is still starting at DT, instead of Couch, it's going to show. I don't think there is a single NFL scout looking at Hood. But Couch is another matter. Just shaking my head at Coach Strip's decision.

Sure he's the coach and all. I get that. But from a fan's perspective, I cannot figure out, for the life of me, why you would start an undersized guy, who has been behind Couch in the depth chart until this fall. Strip said he hasn't seen Couch until fall camp. So? Big freakin deal. He's started here before and fall camp is plenty enough time to make an assessment. It has been for lots of freshman. Why not a Senior?

I guess Strip is a dumb coach. He doesn't see that clearly Couch is the better player and should play every snap he can. Hood is a much worse player in every situation. He was terrible Saturday. This being said, Jones made a dumb decision hiring him and I question him as the head coach.

Was this thread created before or after Saturday. I might have agreed with u beforehand but if this was created afterwards...I don't know what to tell u. He looked like our best defensive player.

Volnation at its finest. *****ing when we win, and well, *****ing when we lose.

Jones said in his media address, the decision was about conditioning.
What I read into it anyway.
Mo will get his minutes though.

Anyone thought it might be a depth issue? Maybe they want to offset Couch and McCullers so one is always on the field. You don't want your big men getting completely gassed. That said, Hood hustled his ass off Saturday and deserves credit for it. He outplayed Couch in that game. Couch may have gotten a sack, but Hood created and completed a turnover, the ultimate goal of the defense.

Don't know why, but I am sure there is a reason. Maybe Hood just outworked Couch, and coaches think he is at present bringing more to the table. As time passes throughout the season, the depth chart is always subject to change. And just because a player is a lower weight does not mean he will be manhandled. Heart, quickness, and technique can beat bigger men. I have seen that on every level from youth to pro.

I can understand a coach rewarding a player for showing more hussle...but when the bullets start flying, that slightly better work ethic ain't going to keep 340 OL from putting Hood on his arse.

The Titans tried that approach with Karl Klug, who is about the same size as Hood. He's good in pass rush situations, but he get's thrown around like a rag doll on running downs. Oregon is going to be a run-heavy offense, and we need as much size upfront as we can muster.

Speed and endurance is what need against Oregon.

Many of you would be attacking anyone if, this time last year, they were to question the wisdom of picking a career position coach (Sunseri) as the DC and switching to a 3-4 scheme in a make or break season.

I'm 100% behind CBJ, and optimistic about this season, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be able to voice a concern about the roster from time to time...without being attacked by the legion of smart a$$es here.

CBJ benched Munchie Leagaux about midway through the season, last year...in favor of Kay, who ended up with a much better pass completion %. So, if one of their fans felt early on, that it might be a mistake playing Munchie rather than Kay, they too would be mobbed by the horde of smart a$$es, like we have here.

You same jokers were dead wrong about Dooley, so you can.....

This is just stupid..please stop..stop living on last years stats
Do you realize that these kids' ultimate goal is to get to the League. When or if they do, it's ALL about your stats. If a drafted DT had Hood's production numbers/stats, they'd get cut....even if they were a 1st Rd pick and had a fat contract.

It's not that big of a deal. I was just wondering if others weren't likewise concerned, because there is good reason to. I hope it's just a move to motivate Couch to step it up a notch, cause I think a DL made up of Corey Miller, Big Dan, Couch and Jaq Smith is a pretty formidable one.

stats are only part of it, don't forget combine performance, pro-day performance, pro scouts evaluating the film of the player, etc.

If you watched any of the game, then you'd notice that Couch looked better in the game than Hood did...the tipped pass notwithstanding. And if you had watched any games the past few seasons, you'd see that Couch made a LOT more tackles than Hood. Hood had 7 tackles in 12 games last year. Couch had 38.

howd that work out for us? there was an entire offseason, and a new coaching staff, past performances dont mean anything anymore.:machgun:

Doesn't mean Couch didn't produce...he did, while Hood did not. That's as good a means to measure future potential as any. You can even compare their stats under Wilcox's 4-3 scheme and conclude who is the better prospect to start.

The staff may feel the same way, and could be that they are using these first 2 games to motivate him to step up (his conditioning?)

Heard radio announcers say that Hood had lost weight and was playing quicker. Last years stats mean nothing, different defense, so not comparable, and as bad as the D was last year, I would not want to make any comparisons. I do not think the coaches would start someone they did not think was playing the best. However, they did say they would re-evaluate every game. And against Oregon, I would think you would want a fast guy, not a big but slow player.

so by your logic, if I was an awesome high school player, and came into the school and didn't do crap..lazy, and had a bad attitude, I STILL deserve to start because I used to be that much better than another player? and why? because you say the players rely on the coaches to get them into the nfl, and not there effort.

the fact is, its a new year...and the coaching staff came in and figured things out for themselves. If hood had not progressed as much throughout the off season he may not have been starting. maybe couch is slightly injured? the fact is you do not know because you are not at every practice, and past years do not mean anything.

I want to just say, "JUST STOP", but that is what this forum is for. You have to realize that our coaches are not DUMB. There is a reason. They want to win at all costs (the coaches) that is...so let it be . If your Mo's family, then I get it. That's cool. But just let the season progress. Both will play a lot. More then they should have to play with a seasoned team. Believe in the brick layer.

Thank you....pretty much what I was going to say, We have great coaches....I trust them. They know what they are doing and there is a reason! Disrespectful to Hood to start this trash. Go Vols!
