Dooley to SMU?

I like to play devil's advocate on this because people forget Bill Belicheck was 36-44 as head coach of the Cleveland Browns... I'm not saying Dooley is Belicheck, but sometimes a person just isn't a fit in a location for a lot of reasons...

Dooley did not have one single break go his way at all in his time at Tennessee... In fact, if Dooley had gotten the same amount of breaks in his entire tenure as Tennessee got last year against South Carolina, he would have won about 5 more games...

All that being said, we're very lucky to have gone through Kiffin and Dooley and ended up with a coach that has as much passion for Tennessee football as we have now... I know it's easy for people to bash Dooley because he disappointed them, but I feel like he honestly tried as much as he was personally able to and I also don't blame anyone for taking a job that he or she might now be ready for... If you want to vilify someone over the Dooley era, his name is Mike Hamilton...

Well, he needs to find a job somewhere with a long term contract so when he gets canned, he will have some spending money when ours runs out.

I really get irritated how often our own fans talk about this game like this. WE OUTPLAYED SOUTH CAROLINA. That was not a game we just happened to win because "a bunch of breaks went our way". At one point in that game my wife turned to me and said "I know I don't know a lot about football, but we just look like a very good team right now." My wife could see it and some Vol fans can't. That's sad.

North's catch wasn't luck, he makes crazy catches all the time. The only "break" we got was Shaw going out, and that wasn't until the very end of the ball game.

We outcoached, outmanned, and outplayed them. I don't know why so many Tennessee fans struggle with this. The Dooley Era is over, this team is capable of competing whether you want to believe it or not. Sorry, end rant, carry on.

I guess SMU wants to be far worse than they are right now! Nobody seems to look at a guy's prior history.

Dooley will fit perfectly.
He will be close to the Alamo and the soap will be pleantyful.

I don't understand all this hate for a guy who just wasn't a good coach, people act like he beat their kids with a baseball bat or something. When he just wasnt ready to coach a big time program but that doesn't mean he cant learn and improve.

No way but up.

On the other hand, SMU might make 30:30 again with this hire.....probably for a different reason.

Trying too hard vs. well, you know.

@footballscoop: Chad Morris will deny it until offered to him but he would love to be the next head coach at SMU. Plenty of Mustangs would love that too

You guys are getting Kiffin and Dooley confused. Dooley didn't commit any NCAA violations as far as I recall. He was just a lousy coach.

Dooley was going to limit our scholarships by falling short of APR minimum requirements instead of NCAA violations.

This was just as bad or worse IMO.

Took Butch and his entire staff's effort to get the APR/academic issues fixed during Spring and Fall of 2013.

You're kidding yourself if you think Dooley was just a bad coach or a coach with bad luck. He didn't care about the players, the alumni, or the University of Tennessee - however he did care about the $5 million buyout he left with.

I would say his lack of recruiting, inability to motivate his players in big games, trash talking individual players, THE WAY HE TREATED FORMER PLAYERS, and overall demeanor were my least favorite Dooleyisms.

He was a bad coach. Probably a great position coach, hence getting hired by Dallas but a bad head coach.

I thought his recruiting was ok when he was here, but that's bc I had nothing to compare it to in recent years. Butch has shown that Tennessee can have top 10 recruiting classes every year with smart, good kids who are very talented and committed to making UT great again.

Everything I hated about Dooley, Butch has made up for 10 fold. It's a lot easier to look back now and see all of the deficits with such a great example for comparison.

GO VOLS!!! LONG LIVE BUTCH JONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Dooley sucks" would have sufficed.

I'd love for SMU to return to some semblance of a forward progressing program, but those days are long gone I'm afraid. The 80's were just a magical time in this state. God Bless Ron Meyer.

Hiring Dooley won't do it. With the kind of budget they'd have they'd be much better off hiring a guy with the ability to also be their signal caller. Somebody with real x's and o's ability. That's not even getting into Dooley's other downfalls.

SMU needs to hire Craig James(or maybe Eric Dickerson). Didn't A&M beat SMU by a late fg in 1984 when SMU was like in the top 5(I think A&M was like 6-5 and SMU ended up 10-2)?

Another question is are we still paying off the buyout from Dooley? Does SMU have the cash to pony up the remainder?

But posters implying above he would lead SMU to another death penalty. I don't think APR would do that.
