I like to play devil's advocate on this because people forget Bill Belicheck was 36-44 as head coach of the Cleveland Browns... I'm not saying Dooley is Belicheck, but sometimes a person just isn't a fit in a location for a lot of reasons...
Dooley did not have one single break go his way at all in his time at Tennessee... In fact, if Dooley had gotten the same amount of breaks in his entire tenure as Tennessee got last year against South Carolina, he would have won about 5 more games...
All that being said, we're very lucky to have gone through Kiffin and Dooley and ended up with a coach that has as much passion for Tennessee football as we have now... I know it's easy for people to bash Dooley because he disappointed them, but I feel like he honestly tried as much as he was personally able to and I also don't blame anyone for taking a job that he or she might now be ready for... If you want to vilify someone over the Dooley era, his name is Mike Hamilton...
Dooley would be a great hire at SMU IMO. He started his coaching career there and knows the recruiting ground well.
Folks forget that he was forced to take on Jim Chaney as the OC, and that combo clearly didn't work.
The Dooltabby would fit SMU's culture to a T.
I could see him being coach there for 20 years and having a lot of success.
