CDD said in his presser today that our safeties need to be at least 215# so they can tackle big offensive ball carriers. He thinks Waggner (181#) and J. Jackson (190#) would be better at CB, but they need JJ at safety right now due to lack of depth. He likes Brent Brewer's size (205#) at safety.

We also have D. Sapp at 205#, but I've only seen him on special teams so far.

With that in mind, what is Dooley's recruiting strategy for DBs?

Commits
E. Loften (205#) > safety.
P. Martin (196#), add wt. > safety.
B. Randolph (180#) > CB??
T. Thomas (194#), add wt. > safety?
J. Coleman (175#) > CB.

Recruits
A. Walls (184#) too light for safety?
D. Crawford (180#) > CB.
D. King (185#) > CB.
R. Harris (160#) > CB.
K. Marcus (187#), too light for safety?
G. Orta (166#), way too light for safety. CB??

Can Walls & Marcus put on 20 to 30# and play safety, or is Dooley recruiting them at CB? Or not pursuing them at all (Walls?).

What do y'all think?

Not many safety's are playing at 215. Brewer has size but is also slow, I'd rather have 1 big guy and 1 quick guy

215+? Aren't you supposee to have LB's and DL that are suppose to bring down the "ball carrier"?

Size isn't the problem right now, its shoddy fundamentals. Maybe he should find somebody that can teach them those.

Prentiss Waggner couldn't tackle my grandmother.

I like Brewer a lot, but he is slow. Needs to be paired up with a fast, physical safety.

This was something he kept repeating Sunday on his show. Kept saying how big and heavy SC's QB and RB is and how hard it was to take them down. I think JJ is ok at his weight, although a few more lbs wouldnt hurt. He just needs to start wrapping up and quit throwing himself at runners like a dart. He needs to realise he's NOT Eric Berry!!

I dont think weight is all that important when it comes to a safety.....anything between 190 - 205 is good enough

Hell, Troy Polamalu is only about 205. Apparently he wouldn't be big enough to play safety in Dooley's system.

Ed Reed is shocked to discover he would not be big enough to tackle a big SEC ball carrier

Loften and Brewer
Janzen and Waggner.

You do not need more than that for the weight to be right

Do you think CDD is out to lunch on this?

Maybe I read more into it than is there. I thought he was saying "215-220# is ideal wt. for a safety" & then I extrapolated that into what Dooley's recruiting strategy might be.

Of course, if there are no speedy 215# guys coming out of HS, then you have to make do with what you can get.

Like this comment?

Thanks for the insight, guys. :hi:

Good point.

Polamalu is currently listed at 207# on the Steelers' roster. However, his hair must weigh an extra 10# or so. :)

How many Ed Reeds are there? Also, can you tell me how many injury problems Ed Reed has had?

Fine. Darren Sharper, Brian Dawkins, Michael Griffin, Yeremiah Bell, Roman Harper, Nick Collins, Brandon Merriweather, Antrel Rolle, Quintin Mikell.

Can anybody tell me what everyone on that list has in common?

Oh yeah, and there are plenty more.

I don't just disagree, I think it is absolutely retarded. Just about every good safety in the NFL right now is under 215.

The tops ones are right around that range.

Adrian Wilson- 226
Meriweather- 200
Rolle- 208
Harper- 200
Collins- 207
Bethea- 205
Polamalu- 206

Some coaches prefer bigger, more physical safeties.

BTW, Eric Berry weighs 211.
