Down goes Arkansas

Very difficult to compare baseball to football or basketball. No one has ever heard of a mlb or major college playing more than 30 games going undefeated. Even the great Yankee teams of the early yrs lost 50+ games & only won 70% of their games
For those who can't see things the other way:

The best teams in the history of major league baseball lost 1 out of every 3 games. The world series champs Cubs (no not recent, the ones from 100+ years ago) are the only team in history to only lose 1 out of every 4 games.

Sometimes, the lucky team wins. Look at the ND MSU game last night. ND killed every ball in the 9th inning, but most were hit right at someone, including a DP ball that could have been lucky and found a hole instead. If so, we are probably discussing the epic meltdown that was the MSU blown lead.

The atmosphere here in hogville is downright morbid. I've seen it before. The 98 "Sternover" at Neyland, the failure to catch an easy pop-up foul three years ago that would have made them champs, and (I was at U.T. at the time) the 69 "Game of the Century" fiasco with the Longhorns. Some programs are perpetually snake bit. I'm beginning to get that feeling about the football Vols, and the Lady Vols (both b-ball and softball).
It's the same atmosphere here in east Arkansas, and its wonderful.

You can’t compare them to Lady Vols basketball, who has 8 national titles. While recent play hasn’t been great, it was a dynasty.

Arkansas is 2-3 in its last 5 games in the tournament (that includes the lost to Nebraska in the Regionals). That is far from undefeated.

My point. Even great teams lose occasionally in baseball. It’s often dominated by pitching. A great pitcher on a given day can beat a far better team with 1 or 2 runs.

What happened to Arkansas could happen at any time to any team. Baseball is more about pitching than anything else. We've long heard the old saw that good pitching beats good hitting most of the time. It wasn't a bad strategic move to throw Kopps in that do or die game. (consideration for his health is another matter) He held the opponent to 3 runs. So, Kopps throwing that game isn't why they lost. They lost because they could only score two against some inspired pitching. A hot pitching staff or just one or two starters who are suddenly pitching their brains out can bring anyone down. Arkansas simply ran into better pitching than Arkansas pitching.

I don't worry about losing a slugfest to another team. I worry about running into a team that has enough pitchers who are in a zone and un-hittable. I fear teams that really pitch well, I don't fear the ones that really hit well, mostly because our pitching is first rate, too, and can shut them down. Look what our pitching just did to LSU. And before that, to Liberty. We are going to Omaha more because of our terrific pitching than any other reason. And a lot of the other teams going to Omaha are, too.
I wouldn’t call Sunday first rate pitching; 4 HR’s and 6 runs is enough to get you beat a lot of days. We won because we blasted 6 HR’s ourselves.

Maybe. Maybe not. You can look at it that way - that we out hit them. Or you can look at it the other way - we out pitched them.

Also, when you are ahead 11-2, you tell your pitcher: "do not walk anyone, throw it over the plate. Let them hit it to our defense. Let them hit it. They'll never make up that difference." If not for that large lead, they might have been pitched very differently.

This man knows baseball. Get a big lead = throw strikes. Sacrifice a few HRs for less pitches and pitchers. I wasn't bothered by giving them up. Just smiled and said keep throwing it down the middle.
