Down goes Arkansas

Arkansas had an incredible team, I think that goes without saying.

However, I will say the post-season exposed DVH's true feelings about his rotation and bullpen. He pretty much rode one horse all the way, and it resulted in him running that horse straight into the ground. He apparently didn't have any faith in the rest of his pitching staff. It really just shows you have truly dominant and lights out Kopps was this year. If not for Kopps, it really makes you think. How good is that team really? They're obviously very good, but Kopps put them on his back all year, and without him they probably finish 3rd in the West as predicted in the pre-season.

I have to wonder if it was Kopps who insisted on starting, wanting desperately to put the team on his back yet again. Obviously the head coach gets paid to make these decisions, but sometimes if your star player looks you in the eye and says, "Coach, I've got this. Give me the ball," ... well, you may just give him the ball. We may never know. Tough break for the kid, though. I imagine he believed he could win it all this year.

at 11 am CDT the heat index had past 100 in north Mississippi. Do you think it's higher in Fayetteville and Baton Rouge?

The rotation gets taxed in Omaha because the games are closer together. They may be vulnerable if we meet them in the championship, especially if they have to come out of the Losers Bracket. Winners Bracket #1 should go Saturday, Monday, Friday, Saturday (If Necessary). Winners Bracket #2 should go Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday (If Necessary). Then a day off before the championship round where all the games are played in consecutive days.
Agreed. I’d imagine if teams get a comfortable lead they’ll take their aces out as quickly as possible to save the pitch count. All bets are off for this tournament though. No tomorrows. Tired? You need to give me 3 more innings young man. 😩

What happened to Arkansas could happen at any time to any team. Baseball is more about pitching than anything else. We've long heard the old saw that good pitching beats good hitting most of the time. It wasn't a bad strategic move to throw Kopps in that do or die game. (consideration for his health is another matter) He held the opponent to 3 runs. So, Kopps throwing that game isn't why they lost. They lost because they could only score two against some inspired pitching. A hot pitching staff or just one or two starters who are suddenly pitching their brains out can bring anyone down. Arkansas simply ran into better pitching than Arkansas pitching.

I don't worry about losing a slugfest to another team. I worry about running into a team that has enough pitchers who are in a zone and un-hittable. I fear teams that really pitch well, I don't fear the ones that really hit well, mostly because our pitching is first rate, too, and can shut them down. Look what our pitching just did to LSU. And before that, to Liberty. We are going to Omaha more because of our terrific pitching than any other reason. And a lot of the other teams going to Omaha are, too.

Arkansas' loss was kind of embarrassing though losing to an unseeded team. They looked terrible. I thought their pitching was alright, they just couldn't score/hit the ball well. Their offense was trash.

Using that logic, if we lose this weekend to UVA it would be even worse since they are a 3 seed. NC State was the 2-seed in the #16 overall seed’s region. They were playing good ball coming in. It really is all about who is hot at this point.

When you are the #1 overall time in the tournament, it is embarrassing not to make the CWS. I consider making the CWS like making the Final Four in Men's Basketball. It would be like Gonzaga getting punked by the 8 seed in the second game of their bracket.

Happens a lot in college baseball.

In the 21 years of the current format, the #1 seed has never won it all.

7 times the #1 seed didn't make it to Omaha.

It would be like Gonzaga getting beat by a 5 seed. The first two seed would be the first 5 seed in basketball terms. The number one overall seed has not won the CWS in like 20 years.

The atmosphere here in hogville is downright morbid. I've seen it before. The 98 "Sternover" at Neyland, the failure to catch an easy pop-up foul three years ago that would have made them champs, and (I was at U.T. at the time) the 69 "Game of the Century" fiasco with the Longhorns. Some programs are perpetually snake bit. I'm beginning to get that feeling about the football Vols, and the Lady Vols (both b-ball and softball).

Actually, if you look at the fact that 8 teams advanced to Omaha and the fact that Arkansas gets home field advantage, it is more like losing to a 7-8 seed at home which fits my description.

Not really because we advanced to the Final Four (or Elite 8 depending on how you are looking at it) and we are not necessarily an experienced team like Arkansas who should have had all of the tools to make a run. They were the overall #1 seed and it wasn't close.

They should ban that a$$hole. Thankfully we don’t have to listen to him unless both Vandy & Tn get in championship series.

I think Vandy comes out of their side of the bracket so that’s highly likely if we make it.

Very difficult to compare baseball to football or basketball. No one has ever heard of a mlb or major college playing more than 30 games going undefeated. Even the great Yankee teams of the early yrs lost 50+ games & only won 70% of their games
