Drew Pember getting some love on ESPN

How do we have so many guys that can shoot well outside our program but forget how to shoot here or are straight up afraid to shoot the ball?

He could help Tennessee. Big guys that can shoot the three are an asset. Love to see him in Orange next year.

I rarely criticize Barnes and am not necessarily doing so here, but I was not a fan of seeing Pember leave.

I thought he had a nice shot for a big guy and good ball handling skills to go with it.

Good to see him doing so well.

He was going to have a hard time taking minutes from Uros, Aidoo, and Awaka inside and he had some limitations defending the perimeter. I would have liked to see him be a 4-year player for TN. But he’s better off getting to play a lot at UNC-A. Plus making the NCAAT is great for him.

We have made a program out of developing players, I think he’d be an asset to this team. No one gives a damn if any of our bigs go out to the perimeter.

Aidoo can hit from the top of the key. Olivier can knock down open 3s as well. Nobody is pressuring Uros or Awaka away from the hoop.

Pember with 29 pts and 8 boards as UNCA wins conference championship.

Barnes never figured out how to use him.

You arent even able to troll worth a ****. I suppose Barnes should have taken minutes away from Fulkerson, Pons, Springer, and Keon Johnson to get Pember on the floor.

Keon and Springer were here for one year. Barnes did fail to use Pember effectively. Does that mean he would be putting up those numbers in the SEC? Heck no.

I think CRB used him on the scout team and the deep bench. That’s about as effective as it was going to get for those 2 years. I’m not sure whose scholarships needed to be taken away to have had DP here the last 2 years and be more effective.

Barnes used him in the exact same role UNCA has. He just didn't have minutes to give him. He was never likely to get the minutes he's getting at the mid-major level, and he wasn't patient enough to wait and see, and rightfully so. He went somewhere that he'd get more time and it paid off. Has nothing to do with Barnes. Everything to do with the talent differential at Tennessee and UNCA and Pember's preference to go somewhere he'd get ample minutes.

Pember was at TN for 2 years and had every resource available to improve his game and his physique. Two years removed from TN and he’s still skinny as a rail. Pember made a good decision to take that 6’10”, 190 pound body to a mid-minor where he could get on the court. He’s not nearly strong enough to play in the paint or quick enough to play on the perimeter in the SEC. It was worth a shot (Bearden was a state champion), but every recruit doesn’t work out. Especially as the roster gets better year by year. Gaines, Walker Jr, Bailey, and Pember moved on and all probably benefited from their fresh opportunities. Some are now with former Barnes assistants so there are benefits to go around with the changes.
