Duke-Maryland

If there was one area I thought Maryland could expose tonight, it was on the boards. The Dookies have answered the call in the second half.

Wow what an amazing game. It's a tale of two half's. Duke just did not look good in the first half at all, but the way they turned it around in the first minute in the second half, I believe told MD, hey we are taking over, you had your fun, now we will have ours! GO BLUE DEVILS! :)

Nelson stepped up with some great senior leadership tonight

That he did. Paulus still makes me a bit apprehensive though when I watch him...luckily that bad mistake towards the end on passing did not cost us the game, but things like that he does make me wonder what he is thinking.

Nelson has been one of the more overlooked players in college bball the past 4 years. He's a great talent and a pretty mild-mannered guy.

I think he's been Duke's most well-rounded player since he arrived, and that's including guys named Redick and Williams.

Dantheman, the talent was always there. He's the current California HS all-time scoring champion, so it's not like he recently learned how to score.

What do you think changed from his sophomore year, when he averaged 7 ppg, to his jr. year, when he averaged 14 ppg?

a couple things I noticed from the Duke game..

1. I know Paulus was plagued with foul trouble for the MD game, but is it me or does Smith continue to get more and more PT? To that, Smith looked really good on both ends of the court last night. I still want and expect to see him as Duke's starting PG next year. I can see Duke using a 3 guard set up and having Paulus still on the floor though.

2. Nelson was huge. I agree with NC that Nelson has always been a threat. I think it's just now that K is letting him take the spotlight.

3. I saw far more flopping in the Gtown and WVU games this weekend than I did last night in Duke-MD.

yep, and they still won, on the road. Duke did to MD what we couldn't do to KY.

Duke is going to be good when all is said and done.

Smith >>>> Paulus. Paulus, however, is the second coming of Wojo, and I think K loves having that mentality on the court. Plus he's probably a better 3-pt shooter than Smith. Paulus would get eaten alive by Ty Lawson, so I bet we'll see K mix up Smith and Paulus against him and try to wear him out when they play each other.

Agree on Nelson - what's different is that Redick isn't taking 90% of the guard positions' shot attempts, and Nelson is showing that he can be as efficient a scorer as most anyone who has put on a Duke uniform.

I didn't watch the GT/WVU or Duke/MD games, but I will acknowledge I saw UT take 2 flops against UGA, still far below Duke's average.

Duke is going to be good when all is said and done.

I think Duke is peaking right now.

Their inside game is not going to improve b/c they don't have an inside game. When they're hitting 3s and playing pressure D and getting long rebounds, they're at their best.

The UNC game will be a doozy.

MD is not KY.

Again, I'm a Duke fan, but they're still overrated. They are very similar to UT, but less athletic and with less depth. I don't like their chances against good teams.

Nolan Smith should play every single second that they feel like he has stamina. He makes them much better defensively and he can actually break down some defenders.

I agree, I think Duke is doing very well. One of the commentators was comparing them to Memphis, not so quite sure you can do that just yet, but I am impressed with this team and their ability to come back in games.

I think their pressure D is really what helps them play in games, to create turnovers in the back court to turn them into points really is key for this team to survive.

MD might not be KY, but tough conference road games are never easy, especially when you don't have much success against the team as of late. Which could be said of both Tenn to KY and Duke to MD.

Some parallels:

Experienced PG who's not as athletically gifted and losing more PT to a younger, more dynamic guard named Smith.

Lack of frontcourt depth, but one decent post defender (Thomas, Chism) and one big, seldom-used body off the bench (Zoubek, BWilliams).

Multiple outside shooting threats triggered mostly by quick, cross-court passes.

Guy who will shoot from 35-feet, and sometimes even bury it (Lofton, King).

Solid, well-rounded inside-out presence (TSmith and Singler).

Coaches who both get a whole lot of airtime (different varieties, albeit, but they're both still out there a lot).

does tough mean not easy?

Maryland, without the victory over UNC, wouldn't even be discussed in college hoops this season. KY has made massive improvement since they've gotten players back. I just don't think the comparison holds and if you believe the last few games against MD matter this season, I'd prefer that the discussion end here.
