Duke/UNC Official Thread 2021/2022 (K’s Last Hurrah Edition)

@RDU VOL#14 thought you might like my initial draft analysis

I haven't done much looking at the draft, but I have been paying attention to the guys everybody says are top 3. Assuming they all declare:

Banchero is probably who I take number 1. I doubt he'll bust and I think he's the most likely guy to be top dog on a contender. He can do some of everything and he's physically gifted. He's also been in the biggest moments of the 3 and he is clearly not afraid to be the guy.

Smith is probably the best shooter and athlete, and he has the highest floor. He's gonna be a great 2-way stretch 4. What he does inside the 3p line on offense doesn't impress me all that much. Might be due to Auburn's guards holding him back.

Holmgren is the potential unicorn of the group but he has the most bust potential. His stats are great. He can pass, shoot, show on screens, drop, rebound, etc. But his ability to hold up scares me. He gets a lot of blocks but college kids are not scared of him. They go right at him and I think that inflates his block stats. I know he'll put on weight but not sure it can be enough or that his body will hold up. His shoulders are so narrow.

I don't think you have nearly the number of elite NBA players wanting to play in the Olympics if it wasn't for K. They respect him.

Good stuff. Imo Banchero has been very good this season. I think that my biggest criticism of Banchero has been that he disappears at times. He’ll go from the 15 minute mark to the under 4 TO and will not have taken a shot. He needs to take advantage of him being 250 and get smaller guys in the post or bigger on the perimeter. His versatility is what makes him very special.

Chet is the big mystery. He’s so talented and skilled for a guy his size, but how much weight can he put on and how will be able to defend?

Yeah, but he's got Duke teammates.

He does. There are other very good players, and he’s a freshman. There are all sorts of reasons. Maybe coaching? The same thing happened w/ Zion in 2019. He would not get the touches he should’ve gotten down the stretch and Duke lost several close games because of it. Duke probably didn’t win the 2019 Title because Barrett would try to get his and they didn’t feed the ball to Zion inside. I’m hoping like hell that doesn’t happen this weekend.

If that’s my biggest fault on Banchero, who is 18-19 yo I’d say he’s gonna be just fine. I have no problem with him being the #1 pick.

Barrett is maybe my least favorite Duke player because of this right here. And he just wasn’t efficient… always seemed like he got his at the detriment of the team. I didn’t shed any tears when he left.

I wouldn’t say Barrett is my least favorite. There are a few guys that really bothered me. Even though Austin Rivers hit one of the most memorable shots in Duke history and Duke/ UNC rivalry history he was a problem . He had to constantly have an assistant coach sitting between him and the next guy on the bench because people couldn’t stand his attitude.

Rivers didn’t endear himself to many, that’s for sure. Talented in certain ways but never was as good as he thought he was. Rode that last name for all it was worth.

Jalen Johnson and Rasheed Sulaimon are two more… I’m guessing they aren’t part of the Brotherhood.

I don’t even think about Jalen Johnson . Sucks about Sulaimon. He had every opportunity, but he blew it on a road game at Notre Dame staying out all night. He ended being a real POS to his teammates.

I don’t want hear anyone bitch tonight if Bacot gets called for an illegal high ball screen. Watching this replay of the first Duke UNC game he was easily initiating contact, extending elbows, using knees. This should not fall into the “Duke gets all the calls” narrative that I’m sure will happen tonight if something like that is called.

I’m not to worried about it. I hope it’s an instant classic and it should be in my opinion

I agree. I think Duke can also afford to have a tighter game called than UNC. Not a lot on the bench for the Heels
No doubt. The refs have really been letting teams play so far in this year’s tournament. Hopefully that continues. No matter which team wins this game, I hope is isn’t marred by the officials deciding the outcome.

Who has enough composure to play through the ups and downs. Who can play through the chippy plays and not get a bad foul called. This game will most likely come down to a swing in momentum and one team will not recover.

Good luck to both sides.

Go to hell Dook!

I expect it to go down to the wire. I have Carolina winning a thriller by 3.

Should be a great game. Have fun, everyone!

K has always kind of favored a smaller lineup over 2 bigs. I haven’t always agreed with it, but it’s what has mostly brought him success over the years. As much as he is a very good X’s and O’s guy he’s an even better psychologist/motivator. He knows how to push buttons better than anyone.

I’ve said before that if he consistently had a big man he could have stacked titles even in the ACC

He already did though without one. He averaged a conference title or tourney title essentially every 3 years for 42 years

He’s had pretty good bigs over the years. Laettner was ahead of his time for a stretch 4 or 5. Cherokee Parks was good. Elton Brand was NPOY, Boozer was NBA All Star, Sheldon Williams was good Okafor won a title, and Bagley and Carey were solid. Point Guard play has always been the key for Duke titles, much like Carolina. Hurley, Jay Williams, Scheyer played great in 2010 managing the offense, and then Jones. The reason Duke is playing today isn’t Banchero, it’s Jeremy Roach. He’s taken control of the team. Where he goes, Duke will go.

Not a lot of whistles in Game 1. Hope that carries forward. Let the players decide it on the court.
