Duke/UNC Official Thread 2021/2022 (K’s Last Hurrah Edition)

Kansas also beat the 2018 Bagley/Carter Duke team in the Elite 8 in OT
Shouldn’t have happened .

There are definitely parallels to 91 if Duke and Kansas both win Saturday. It would be crazy for K to bookend his titles with wins over Kansas after what would be the biggest Semifinal victories in his career.

I could be wrong, but I think Carolina has won two of the last three against Villanova in the tourney. Kansas, on the other hand, I can’t remember the last time Carolina beat them, NCAA tournament or otherwise.

The first final 4 game I really remember was Duke vs Kansas back in 1988. Danny Manning and Kansas led by Larry Brown’s cheating ass got that title. Seems like Kansas is always around.

Carolina actually has fared even better against Villanova than I thought, Nova’s win in 2016 being their only victory in this matchup since 1985. Carolina hasn’t beaten Kansas in a game that mattered since the Final Four in 1993, also played in New Orleans.

That Villanova win in 2016 was horrible. Carolina should have gone back-to-back in 2016 and 2017.

Oh interesting debate. I don't know if tops the 91 UNLV win. I get that's it's UNC but that may have been the biggest upset in final four history

Oh that’s rough and annoying.

I’m so torn on how I think this game will go against UNC. We killed them in Chapel Hill. They methodically just beat us down in the second half in Cameron. I think we got tight as that game went on… maybe having blown it in big moments will drive this team to do whatever it takes to not allow a let down to happen again.

I'm torn on how it will go since both are playing well right now, but I still have the last home game and acc championship game in my mind. Which Duke and which UNC team will show up? I feel like there is more pressure for Duke to win again, which I don't like.

Yeah. As a UNC fan, it pains me to say that I correctly picked Duke to beat UNLV in the Final Four and to win the NCAA tournament that year.

If not for them facing Duke, I’d say that Carolina could play with zero pressure because nobody picked them for the Final Four preseason, they were written off (rightfully so) during the season and nearly played themselves out of the tournament altogether, yet here they are, having exceeded expectations and playing with house money. But, it’s Duke and the result will be forever remembered, win or lose. The result doesn’t matter to the program, but it means everything to the program at the same time.

In terms of upsets definitely not, but I think this is/will be a monster game with a huge TV #. It sure some seems like some are trying to downplay the significance of this game because of what happened a few weeks ago. This is the Final 4 with the two biggest rivals in College Basketball, it could only be bigger if this game were Monday night.

Yeah, I hear ya. Those games are hard to get out of your head. My gut feeling (and hope) is that they’ve grown up and matured so that they can better handle high pressure moments. I don’t disagree that the pressure is squarely on Duke given that they are favored to win and UNC is playing with house money. But I think they are looking at this as a revenge game and want blood. I don’t think they are allowing themselves to feel that pressure beforehand like they did in K’s last game in Cameron. If the pressure ratchets up in this game because it’s close, I think we now have the maturity to handle it. Otherwise, we don’t make it this far …MSU and TT were slugfests. We punched right back…Hoping we punch like crazy in New Orleans.

Scheyer will have expectations but I don’t think it’ll be titles or bust for him, at least early on… even if Duke wins the title on Monday night. Folks know that K is 1 of 1. Wooden is the only thing close to him and it’s not an apples to apples comparison for various reasons. Scheyer will get time in my opinion. K knows what it’s like to not do well early on at Duke… I think he’ll push the powers that be to give Scheyer ample time.

I don’t know what to think about Davis and UNC. They looked so mediocre until about 3-4 weeks ago. I don't think Davis is the long-term answer at UNC but I also didn’t think they’d have this sort of turnaround… so what do I know?
Is it just me, or was UNC underrated all year? Which is weird for a blue blood (usually if a blue blood is mis-rated, they are overrated).

Were they just short on quality wins? They had only two bad losses (at Wake and Pitt) all year.

They were 16-7 at one point in the season, opening conference play at 3-3. Then got trounced by Duke at the Dean Dome. I don’t think they were underrated. But they came alive at the right time.

I don’t think they were underrated. When they lost they went down in flames . I thought they were finished after the Pitt game.

Who is downplaying it? It's huge. What I see is Duke fans trying to pretend that if they were to win this game it somehow erases the stain of Coach K's final game loss in Cameron. This game will stand in its own right for whichever team wins it, but it doesn't erase the past.

It clearly took some time for them to get it together. Whether that was getting used to Davis’ coaching or something else, I don’t know. They lost by almost 30 to UK. Same with Miami. Lost by 22 to Wake. And then lost to an awful Pitt team. To me it comes down to Manek. If he can stretch the floor, then it opens the middle for Bacot and Davis/Love can have driving lanes. He’s the key in my opinion, and I don't think they were using him effectively or consistently until the last 4-6 weeks of the season.

Not saying it erases the past, but it will be a footnote for Duke fans if Duke goes on to win the title . Losing to UNC at home will have been the kick in the ass this Duke team needed to get their season back on track. That’s going to be the spin.

I'm not sure anybody, except UNC fans and huge CBB junkies, remembers K's last game in Cameron if Duke wins this game. And especially if they win the whole thing.

If Duke loses, then absolutely people will remember it ("K's last 2 losses were both to UNC...his final game at Cameron, and then a few weeks later in the Final Four.")

Manek will be the key for Carolina, but he played well against Duke in Chapel Hill. I’m interested to see if they leave Manek on Banchero again. He’s not a good defender. Period. If the play is going to be getting Banchero the ball on the block UNC will have to double or Manek will have to foul. This means Griffin should play a 2 man game with Banchero or someone else will come double and a combo of Moore, Keels and Roach cut to the basket. If Duke gets points in the paint I like Duke’s chances. UNC hasn’t seen this version of Jeremy Roach. His taking control of the offense is why Duke is in this game.

Do you want to know who remembers that last Cameron loss no matter what what happens this Saturday? Coach K. He will always remember it no matter what happens, and it will always bother him.

Win or lose on Saturday, he feels the impact of that loss less after this game. If he beats UNC to get to the final, he gets some measure of revenge. If he loses this game, then it becomes a more painful loss than his final game at Cameron.

Too much is made of his final game at Cameron. Yes, it was a shocking loss, even to a neutral like me. I thought there was no way in hell they'd lose that game given the circumstances. But it isn't like when people 30 years from now think of Coach K, "lost his last home game to UNC" is the first thing they'll think of. I don't even think it's the 5th thing they'll think of. You speak of it like it is some pall draped over his entire career that supersedes everything else he did. It'll be something that sticks out to UNC people, to be sure, but not CBB or sports fans at large.

Besides Tennessee fans, who else remembers that Bear Bryant lost his final game against Tennessee in a shocking upset? Is it the first or second thing CFB fans think of when they hear his name?
