Duke/UNC Official Thread 2021/2022 (K’s Last Hurrah Edition)

Win or lose on Saturday, he feels the impact of that loss less after this game. If he beats UNC to get to the final, he gets some measure of revenge. If he loses this game, then it becomes a more painful loss than his final game at Cameron.

Too much is made of his final game at Cameron. Yes, it was a shocking loss, even to a neutral like me. I thought there was no way in hell they'd lose that game given the circumstances. But it isn't like when people 30 years from now think of Coach K, "lost his last home game to UNC" is the first thing they'll think of. I don't even think it's the 5th thing they'll think of. You speak of it like it is some pall draped over his entire career that supersedes everything else he did. It'll be something that sticks out to UNC people, to be sure, but not CBB or sports fans at large.
You are missing my point entirely. I don't care about what most people think, and I don't care about what Duke fans think. Duke fans will always only remember the good things about Coach K's tenure, and that's to be expected. Coach K will always remember it, and it will always bother him that his last game at Cameron was a loss to his biggest rival. That is what I care about.

Manek will be the key for Carolina, but he played well against Duke in Chapel Hill. I’m interested to see if they leave Manek on Banchero again. He’s not a good defender. Period. If the play is going to be getting Banchero the ball on the block UNC will have to double or Manek will have to foul. This means Griffin should play a 2 man game with Banchero or someone else will come double and a combo of Moore, Keels and Roach cut to the basket. If Duke gets points in the paint I like Duke’s chances. UNC hasn’t seen this version of Jeremy Roach. His taking control of the offense is why Duke is in this game.
Griffin has so much untapped potential. He has a 25 point game in him. He reminds me of Winslow for the 2015 squad.

Roach is definitely playing at a different level. His confidence is sky high… he just needs to keep playing within himself. I don’t want him to go into hero ball. But he has the ability to completely control the game and the tempo. Keels is erratic, but he and Moore are very effective when they play downhill. I’d prefer Keels not to take outside shots although he can randomly hit one.

To your point, I would have Roach, Griffin and Banchero overloaded to one side. If they double on Banchero, Griffin and Roach are our best outside threats. Maybe Moore.

The other key is Duke’s defense. It’s come back over the past 4 games. If they can keep UNC under 45%, they win. If it ticks up around 50%, I’m holding my breath. In Duke’s losses, OSU shot 48%, Miami shot 46%, FSU shot 36% (turnovers killed us), UVA shot 48%, UNC shot 49%, and VT shot 50%. Take care of the ball and make them take contested shots. Usually a recipe for success.

Nah. He won 1,129 other games and 5 titles at Duke. It wouldn't register in the top 10 if you asked him to write down all the notable events (positive or negative) that happened to him during his career.

Keels has a confidence problem and he seems checked out. Amazingly, he isn’t going to class the past few weeks +. I don’t know what he’s thinking , but losing $$. After the Kentucky game I thought he was going to be a monster, but following his injury he’s been a head case. He’s good in spurts, but he needs to get to the basket to make an impact.

You're a self-described "neutral". I wouldn't expect you to understand it.

What are you, one of these "Vol Heels" or whatever they call them? I would expect you to overplay that loss as much as possible then. I would think that neutrality would allow someone to judge that loss more objectively than a fan of either team.

He's Duke's 5th leading scorer in points per game. I hope he jacks up as many shots as possible. I much rather him be taking Duke's shots than their other players.
You want a 46% three point shooter to jack up as many shots as possible? His shots come in the rhythm of Duke’s offense so I doubt he’ll get up more than 10-12 shots but could still eclipse 25 pts even with that low number of shots. His high number of FGA is 13 for the year. He’s been insanely efficient.

So bizarre. Getting bad advice from someone. DJ Steward and Trevon Duval come to mind.

I’d be willing to bet he didn’t want it to be the sideshow it turned into. Obviously he’d never say that but I got the impression that was his mindset during his message to the Cameron faithful. Outside of that you don’t get to the level he’s gotten to worrying about 1 game. If that were the case and it bothered him Duke would have checked out early.

I think the very first one is where are we going,” Krzyzewski asked. “And who is going to be in charge? Not that I'm saying that he shouldn't be. But what are we doing? What are we doing to make sure we're taking care of all divisions that are under your roof -- men, women, all sports, those that make money and those that just make men and women out of people. And probably that's more important than the other, but you have to do that. So there's balance. And we're understanding that everyone cannot be treated the same. That doesn't mean that everyone's not treated fairly. And it's a new day that should have been a new day decades ago. So we've got a lot to make up for.”

K has been critical of the NCAA for a long time . I think we all have.

I am a Duke casual who partly was in bc I liked K, but I don't like him anymore, and I can't really decide what I want to happen tomorrow. I want Duke to win bc this is the first time they've faced in the final 4, but K losing this game is the most delicious exit.

After reading the entire article I believe what you said previously about him being tired of the revolving door is definitely true. It’s a constant change and adjustment that he’s extremely tired of in my opinion.

Just curious, why don’t you like K anymore?

He kinda lost me as a basketball genius with team USA. We almost lost gold because we only had two bigs (Chandler and Love) and he wouldn't play either of them much. He'd rather have a 5th scorer like Melo on the floor. We barely beat Lithuania because they outrebounded us. Seems like his legacy is more about having the best players and running a tight ship, which is still impressive but doesn't get my love the same way.

Once you no longer think he is a genius, the rest of the magic falls apart and you really notice how he's kind of a dick, and uppity, and hypocritical.

Hmm interesting. I admittedly didn’t follow Team USA basketball much, at least not in the detail that you describe. But, he’s never overly impressed me with X’s and O’s so what you stated isn’t surprising to me. I think he’s a manager of people and can get a group to all pull in one direction better than just about anyone, basketball coach or otherwise. Plus, yes, he’s had incredible talent over the years. I don’t necessarily hold any of that against him though.

He has his faults as we all do. He’s human. But I’ve heard way too many things about the man to think anything other than very highly of him. He has helped untold number of folks and his reach far exceeds basketball. He’s going to be sorely missed.

Can’t say that I’ve heard that take before. I thought most applauded the way he brought USA basketball back after the disaster that was Larry Brown (Tar Heel).

I feel like I could coach team USA to gold so "bringing them back" is what I would expect out of any coach. 2004 was a terribly constructed roster. Their main 2 ball handlers were inefficient ballhogs. K didn't make that mistake, despite other roster and personnel mistakes that threatened their success. No other team USA has made that mistake of two misfit ballhandlers. Every other team has won Olympic gold.

Huff likes hot takes more than Skip, Stephen A., and Cowherd combined

K has always kind of favored a smaller lineup over 2 bigs. I haven’t always agreed with it, but it’s what has mostly brought him success over the years. As much as he is a very good X’s and O’s guy he’s an even better psychologist/motivator. He knows how to push buttons better than anyone.

I would have been fine with one big. I think that's typically ideal. I'm not kidding when I say Melo was playing 5.
