No real surprises IMO. I have been skeptical of all the speculation about Freshmen starters. Moseley must have really impressed the coaches though. He has the speed no doubt, but I didn't expect he would be ready.
Brief video clips can be misleading....
Some guys can't do it while the band is playing. That kid was so nervous and tore up last year, I never want to see him take another snap. I could not care less about how highly rated he was. The big state schools didn't want him.
What do you base this on? Butch has said that it's an open competition, if he out performs both in fall camp, doesn't he get a shot at starting?
"Depth chart shuffle: We expected there to be plenty of depth chart shuffling throughout camp and we saw a few new faces getting reps on Monday. Nathan Peterman got reps as the first-team quarterback, while Joshua Dobbs and Justin Worley split time with the twos. With no quarterback named, it makes sense that Butch Jones would give reps to multiple guys to let them play out the competition."
My first statement was based on this..... mixing and matching, like you said, creating an open competition environment.
However, my opinion that there is no possible way that Peterman moves or has moved ahead of Dobbs is based on their respective performances last year. Dobbs had a much larger sample size than Peterman, and although Dobbs at times played very poorly as a true freshman, his worst performance was better by tenfold than Peterman's absolutely atrocious and historically bad first half vs Florida. I'll also add that Brent Hubbs said point blank, soon after Spring practice during the Ferguson exodus, that "Peterman was a complete non factor during the Spring".
Now, is it possible that Peterman can rebound, redeem himself and overtake Dobbs as the backup?? I guess it is, and if he does I'll be pulling for him. But I just don't see it. Jmo.
Edit: from RockyTop Insider...
QB update: Still not a lot of great news to report, though we saw a small bit of improvement on Monday. Joshua Dobbs had some good throws, but is still sailing some of them. Justin Worley is underthrowing a lot of balls. Nathan Peterman didnt hurt himself in what we saw of his work with the first team, though its still difficult to see him really getting in the mix at this point. Hes done some good things in camp. Well keep an eye on him going forward.
Its early... It will shuffle in the next few weeks due to injuries and players stepping up. I think its always a big mistake for coaches not to pick a starting QB by fall and go with him. Gives too much room for fan pressure and coaches to second guess their selves.
The old saying is if you have two starting qbs, you have no qbs unless you are Spurrier.
Peterman was ahead of Dobbs last year until he was injured. It's quite possible that Peterman would have played much more last season had he not been injured at UF. If Worley doesn't get injured Dobbs never sees the field and gets a redshirt. My point is Worley and Peterman were clearly the top two QB's coming out of fall camp last season, and it would not surprise me to see the same thing this year. But, I think Worley is clearly ahead of everyone at this point.
Peterman would've played a lot more last season had he not been injured vs Florida? Did you see him play that first half vs Florida? That was absolutely the worst, most incompetent half of football I've ever seen a QB play. It's easy to point to his passing stats.... He QB rating was .7, not 70 or 7, but .7 ... but it was much more than that. For one quick example, he couldn't get the team lined up correctly as evidenced by Raijon's fumble deep in Fla territory early in the game... the DE ran completely free and caused the fumble because Peterman had us in the wrong play/alignment.
He was 100% rattled from the opening snap, completely flummoxed, totally out of his league the entire first half and never showed a single sign of snapping out of it and settling down. I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Nathan Peterman for his attitude and work ethic since, but that performance, IMHO, sealed his fate as a UT quarterback. As poorly as Joshua Dobbs played at times, including the Vandy game when he too had an injured throwing hand, he was worlds better than Peterman last year.
