Earth-like Planet Found

So I guess the government is going to waste even more money we don't have to investigate something that we can never reach and means absolutely nothing. Scientists should spend their time better than searching for planets that could be earth like. Total waste of time and money.

So do you think we should have never "wasted" taxpayer dollars to travel off this planet and to make trips to the moon? I guess you're right, what have we possibly gotten out of travel to space??

Just because we can't get there now doesnt mean we never will be able to. What is Columbus had said "whats the point in looking for a north-west passage?" Geez.

The only hope man kind has for survival in the distant futre is to get off the rock. Better start looking now.

We've gone from the speed of horse to the speed of sound in less than a century. Its entirely possible that we could reach the speeds of light within another hundred years IMO.

The majority of the human race is not ready to believe life is possible anywhere but on Earth. I am all for space travel and discovering new things. IF we was ever to find intelligent life, the majority of us would go crazy. Imagine if that said intelligent life was 1000 years more advanced than us. We wouldn't know how to handle it.

I would say its probable. Human minds are a machine, they don't stop. 1000 years from now humans may look back and laugh at us for thinking we are alone in all of the galaxy. It wasn't long ago in the grand scheme of things we thought the Earth was flat, and didn't know about the Americas or human life on the land. We think that is pretty funny now don't we?

I think you're underestimating the human race. We are the most adaptable species on the planet and most of us would be able to handle the fact that we are not alone in the universe. I think i'd go as far to say that the majority would relish the chance to learn from a civilization that's thousands of years more advanced than ours. I mean if they haven't destroyed us right when they discovered us (when presumably they could do so with ease) then I don't think there is much to worry about. In any case there is little point in worrying about anything that we have no control over.

I'd rather be spending money on this than welfare and foolish wars...

Yeah you are right we would try studying and learning from them. See our history with other intelligent hominoid species though. Where are they now? The people in power around the world would be weary of their motives and would want them gone. We would give them a reason to attempt destroying us. You underestimate our species basic instincts. When it comes down to it, we don't hesitate to become violent, especially when it comes to survival.

Ok so let's assume that this planet contains microbial life that is based on the element carbon. The statement is made to the entire world that life outside of earth has been found. Is it interesting news? Yes. However after that so what? The planet is 500 light years away, a distance we have absolutely NO chance of reaching.

So we have no way of reaching the planet, no way to explore it and bring back samples. Basically all we would have is the statement "we have discovered life outside of earth." Now if we were able to go to the planet, explore and bring back samples then that would be awesome. However the technology doesn't exist to do those things. Until we find a way to travel faster than the speed of light then this is a pointless issue.

How about using the money for feeding the homeless and poor children here in the US? Maybe putting more money into education? Biomedical research? How about taking the money and putting it back into the economy? What about using that money to upgrade the power grid across the country? How about using the money for repairing roads and bridges?

There are much better ways to spend money than using it to explore space. These are just a few.

Do you even realize how much space exploration advances other fields?

There is plenty of wasted money in other areas that could go to the things of which you speak.

And again, getting there now may seem imposdible but one day it may not. Haveing a destination in mind is the first step.

So space exploration is more important than the things I listed? Ok. Sure thing. I guess I just care about helping people on this planet much more than worrying about if life may or may not exist on other planets.

BOT is incapable of handling anything that would be incompatible with his life views.

Please explain my life views. Also why would the possibility of life on a planet that has no chance of being explored for a long time, be incompatible with my life views?

If God created earth and we found life on a planet 500 light years away, who created them?

I would say God created them too. Why should God be limited to just earth?
Makes a lot of sense! If god created the entire universe why would he just put life on one planet? It seems to me like he would put life on tons of planets so maybe one of the planets inhabitants actually gets it right.

I love it when people say things like god did not create aliens. I always ask the question why not? They always invariably say in some way, well gods not an alien. I remind them that God By definition is an alien. Well god said he created us in his image. And I love this part. I just grin and say well how many images does an all powerful all knowing god have. Answer, As many as he wants to. Drives'em up a wall.

There are other places to get that money from. It may sound cruel, but the lives of individual humans shouldn't be detracting from furthering the collective knowledge of the human race.
