East Tennessee Weather II

Weather bulletin:

For those who are leaving the house this morning, be careful on the roads. There's a lot of fog, with some areas having very dense fog.

I've been paying attention to fog warnings since spring and last night was by far the worst one. I was driving to my sister's house and was about 30 feet from the entrance to her neighborhood and had to slow down the car and second guess that I was in fact at the entrance because the fog was so thick.

People who don’t turn on their headlights in the fog should be given a ticket and a 3 hour lecture from the cop on the side of the road.

Looks like the classic cold weather trough is setting up for us through the first week of January. For those of you out there that pay attention to the models, did you all catch how massive this 1050 mb arctic high is that is going to be settling in to our northwest? It's a big boy. Looking like a slight chance for light snow later this week, with a better chance of some light accumulating snowfall for New Years. Latest GFS model run shows about 1 - 3 inches, but it's still a long ways off, so we'll see. Nearly anything that falls then of course will accumulate since we will have very cold ground temperatures.

The biggest story in the near future is how cold it's going to be. Some models are showing a 1060+ arctic High Pressure in the northern plains next week. If that comes to fruition, not only would we have the chance to break record strength of high pressure in the lower 48 states, but there will be some very frigid low temperatures (single digits to potentially below zero).

At what point do we all just freeze to death though, 1270+?

0 degrees.

Jokes aside, I hope it doesn't get as cold as some of the models have shown. It's nice to have the cold in place to set up accumulating snow, but I'd prefer not having to deal with north pole cold.

Bring it on, I'm one of the few southerners who love the cold. I could do without the ice but I really want a good snow here in West TN. Its been a few years since we've had a decent one.

Watching two systems. The first at the beginning of next week looks to be verifying. Still a ways out. The second is on the 8th. Still a lot of time with it.

Don't get me wrong, I love the cold. I'll take the cold over the heat any day of the week, which is why winter is my favorite season. It's just that I've felt temps being in the lower teens with wind chills around 0 and it is a cold that literally stings me.

Yeah, it's absolutely the wind chill that gets you. 15 degrees with no wind is a walk in the park but add a 15mph gust and you'll be walking really fast.

I grew up in Pampa Texas on the high plains. I've seen weeks of sub-zero temps with -30 to -40 wind chills. Me and my extreme arthritis hate cold weather now with a passion.

Count me in as a Southerner who loves the cold as well. Went out to Steamboat Springs for Christmas. High of 7 with 32 inches of snow over a 24 hr period. Heaven.

Hey VolKnight or RockyTopper, see any snow chances on the horizon for East TN? Just a couple of days ago, models were showing snow in East TN, and then this Arctic front has come through with dry, cold air.

I don’t mind cold weather but I despise snow. I used to love it, then started driving a truck for a living. Snowy roads bring out the worst in people.

The only story right now is the frigid temperatures. Flurries are possible, but measurable snow outside of the higher elevations is not in the cards in the short term.

Given the brutally low temperatures the next several days, what is the Cryoseism prediction for the valley?

With how dry it has been recently, I don't think that will be an issue. The ground needs to be saturated for an ice quake to happen.
