Electric Vehicles

$1k tax done at purchase sucks for those buying new evs. It's also wildly different than what ICE cars pay. A decent percentage of these cars wont be around in 10 years due to problems, wrecks, etc. Strange to have half the cars on the road paying tax on a per use basis while the other half is paying some guesstimate upfront cost that may or not be even remotely close to the car's usage of public roads.
I agree that the EV tax should be on consumption. However, there is the logistical issue of measuring the power dispensed to EV's. Given the fact that the last administration spent something like $8 billion trying to build a handful of EV power stations, it's more cost effective (and certainly better for up-front government cash flow) to charge $1k at time of purchase than to retrofit all EV chargers to measure (and collect) the tax. The big thing that I don't like about the up-front tax at purchase is that it gives a free pass to current EV owners.
