"Eric was basically in tears and this is a big kid that doesn't cry," his high school coach told the Knoxville News Sentinel. "He was in tears. He's upset. It's been his lifelong dream to play at the University of Tennessee. And this isn't a case where he's not good enough to play at Tennessee. I promise you; he's good enough."
Already there's buzz that Dooley is losing several junior recruits once interested in the Vols, so there may be reason for concern. The News Sentinel writes, "UT once boasted one of the strongest 2011 classes in the nation when it had commitments from Louisiana defensive tackle Anthony Johnson, Georgia linebacker A.J. Johnson and MacLain. Since UT?s latest coaching change, Anthony Johnson committed to LSU and A.J. Johnson reopened his recruitment."

LULZ wow, no need to freak out yet. There is a season to play and we are 49 weeks from signing day. We'll be just fine

I love how espn makes it look like Anthony Johnson decommited because of Dooley, when he really decommited when Kiffin was here.

CDD has the intrest of 4 tight ends rated higher than McClain. Including the #1 TE in the country! Kiffin denied scholly's to a bunch of kids that had commited to the pumpkin,no big deal. Just because a kid wants to play for the Vols does not entitle them to scholly. Heck, I would have liked to play for the Vols too!!!! V,B

I'm going to trust Dooley and staff to do the recruiting and not listen to these silly articles about whiney kids who's wittle feelings got hurt..... If Dooley wants/needs this kid, he will be playing in orange next year.... If not, oh well......

Let's see how it plays out. Dooley and this staff was remarkable closing with the time they had coming down to NSD. Let's see how they can do with a full year and full staff to recruit with. I'm sure there will be quite a few that freak out and make arses out of themselves as usual though.

It took us all of 2 weeks to get Rogers, Hunter, and Stone so I could care less if this guy decommitts 11 months before NSD, it doesn't mean anything at this point.

no he didn't. It was said that all scholarships already offered would be honored but Kiffin advised some players that they had a better chance of playing if they moved on.

There are people that follow this closer than me, but I don't get it. If there is any chance you want the kid then you keep him tied in until you are sure you have landed someone better(if that is what you are trying to do).

The 2 Johnson's started looking around as soon as Kiffin bolted on us they are not Dooley's fault. But say what you will perception in this day of the media can hurt. I'm willing to give Dooley a chance, but the media will jump on him because he's not going to kowtow their every whim. If Satan didn't win in 'Bama the media would be all over his attitude(think about how they treated him when he lied about staying with the Dolphins). Dooley wins, this all goes away. He doesn't, he won't have much rope left. It's still early, but look at LSU and Texas and how quickly they jump on guys. I know this staff is working hard to get Junior Day and the spring set up. But, I'm not going to lie. I want so badly to see this program win that sometimes I get a little antsy, I'll admit it.

Guys, MacLain is going to play OL, not TE.

The staff talked with him last night and things are starting to be smoothed over.

He has a Vol offer and should be here on Junior Day.

Anthony Johnson decommitted when Frank Wilson went to LSU. He had been gone for a while by the time Dooley arrived.

How did it get to the point that it had to be "smoothed over"?

Mainly because of the MacLain's overreacting imo. Baggett called his coach right after NSD (which shows he is a high priority), offered MacLain, and invited him up to Junior Day. At this point, I don't know what Eric and his dad expected.
