ESPN layoffs.

Is it really?......crap......so sick of these iconic movies being remade 40 years later and ruining the franchise. Top Gun is the only one that comes to mind that tried to hold true to the original instead of just a cheesy cash grab. (And for the record the original is best)
No one wants to see an old washed out Indiana Jones. Kathleen Kennedy has now ruined all the iconic characters of Lucusfilms. Sad.

The Mouse owns 67% of Hulu now. ESPN is the glue that keeps Disney's cable bundles together, I don't see them selling.

A stand alone ESPN streaming service might be in play but cable bundles pay a bunch of bills.
I don't know anything about the business but I wouldn't be surprised if streaming services are coming and they might even be divided by conference. In other words one could select to stream SEC games, or some other conference games or a combination or all games.

OK, they want to take total control of HULU, apparently.

https://www.npr.org/2023/05/10/1175252875/disneys-q2-earnings-increased-profits-but-a-mixed-picture

The Walt Disney Company reported a 13% increase in quarterly earnings on Wednesday — to $21.8 billion.

Article is complete bullsh-t. Disney had revenue of 21.8 billion. After they paid all of their expenses, they had EARNINGS of 1.271 billion. Earnings is what you make after you pay all your expenses.

The NPR article headline attempted to overstate earnings by over 1700%....

ESPN was doing great when they covered sports. CNN and MSNBC already existed, they had no reason to start doing the same ******** those networks do with a highlight sprinkled in here or there.

Sports center used to be game highlights, now is a soap opera about social justice and which GM or owner is being racist today.

People stopped watching.

Highlights and actual sports, including obscure ones, are what made ESPN great. They then decided to invest in talking heads whose insights are about as educated as a below average message board poster and when that continually stopped working, they decided politics was the answer.

F espn and the woke horse they rode in on. The people on here who are defending them should be ashamed to look themselves in the mirror. Do you remember the “ trailer park frenzy tonight” comment.

I didn't know any of those guys worked for ESPN except Pollack (well I remember he use to). I haven't watched a ESPN shows in many years. I find it strange that a lot of you guys are saying "I'm glad so and so is gone, I didn't like watching them". My question is why are you still watching them if you don't like it?

This seems insane to me. I'm not sure how you make job cuts with the goal of "managing costs" only to turn around and replace one analyst with Rivers/Jefferson/Redick (the last option being the most abysmal by far) who will surely command a similar salary.

If ESPN wants to save money, they need to leverage in-stadium announcing for more of their non-marquee matchups in college football and college basketball for starters and cut down on some of the bloat. Replacing high-dollar guys with new but similarly famous faces isn't going to accomplish anything.
I tune in to a sporting event to watch the athletes play, not because of whatever talking head is rattling on about as most all of them have become awful. I’d pay that position a way way more modest salary and see if it has any effect on viewership.

Some of them get forced on you while trying to watch live broadcasts. Many of us don't watch them intentionally.

All true, but as we have discussed in another forum ... Disney is not a "dying" company. Due to political persuasions, their financial strife is overstated sometimes.

And I do hate to see McShay go. He gave pretty good NFL Draft analysis, without the ego trip that Kiper takes.

Only thing I watch on ESPN/SEC network is college football and basketball and only because I have to. I do miss the old days of SportsCenter when they actually showed scores and highlights without the woke commentary.

I only watch College Gameday and any UT team playing on ESPN. I do, however, check headlines and scores on my phone. That's where I see multiple daily "Stephen A. says..." trash pieces. After I get past NBA, Hockey, Golf, and other sports I care nothing about, that is.
