ESPN Profit Plummets As Network Turns Left

Are we talking about ESPN or nighttime soaps. I think the thread is about ESPN losing profits. But if you want to talk about the other stuff , I disagree with that just as much. I don't watch that either. I am amazed at how the Bible creates such emotion in the argument though. Shows how powerful it is

What I don't get is, isn't his Fox Sports 1 network losing just as much? The last I heard they weren't exactly setting the world on fire and show like Skip Bayless' are doing terrible in the ratings.

If Travis does anything, it's brag when he's right and the fact that he never brags about how awesome FS1 is doing tells me they aren't.

The difference is that ESPN's business plan relies more so on subscribers than other channels. Approx $8/month of everyone's cable bill is for ESPN where as (just from memory) the 2nd most expensive channel is $2~.

ESPN spends a ridiculous amount of money on live broadcasts of games, something like $8 billion and $2 billion for MNF alone. This is creating a sports rights bubble which is the reason that there has only been 3 NBA players ever make $30 mil/year, MJ, Kobe and.... Mike Conley. One of these is not like the others. This is due to how much ESPN has been spending for the rights to their content.

I purposefully don't watch ESPN because of ...
1. Marxist political philosophy flooded (Angering)
2. Talking heads dominance instead of sports (ANALysts are boring)
3. News distortion. "All day every day it's 'Barry Bonds', 'Tebow', 'Kaperneik'(sp?) (Rediculous)

... it only comes on when the Vols are playing live, and instrantly goes off before I have to hear someone explain to me what I just saw.

** Android(only) users: ESPN, 2, U, News, Foxsports etc etc etc, not to mention news, TV shows and more, are all free for you on your Android device by sideloading (not in Play Store) the Mobdro app onto your device.
#1 Google it and find install app on their official site
#2 Download it to your Android device
#3 It's a good idea to security scan the downloaded file before installing
#4 Select app and install (you may be prompted to change your settings to allow installs from sources outside the Play Store or Samsung store or Amazon etc)
#5 Once installed, everything sports is almost there in good resolution, smooth stream, solid stability, and a super easy app to navigate.
#6 Chromecast support on-board.

... just thought this would be a good place to share some publicly available information.

They do seem to concentrate on making the reporters the stars instead of the athletes. Which is what we want! We want the athletes. A kid can do what the reporters do.

So if I get an Xfinity deal that only has ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU will that allow me to watch SEC network online or would I need SEC network in my channel lineup?

I think it just comes with it as long as you live in the region.

I have a WatchESPN login for my Mom's cable account. She doesn't even watch sports so she just has the base package that ESPN is included with. Only one I don't get is ESPNNews. SEC Network is included.

Ok thanks. We have Uverse now and it's over $200. Xfinity has a deal that would take my channels down to 140 but I would almost triple my internet speeds locked in at $79.99 for two years so probably going that route.

and learn how to spell basic words (ridiculous) before passing along your viewpoints. I doubt that you know the first thing about Marxism, and that you attribute it to espn shows how, er, ridiculous this thread is.

The new "SC6" or whatever they call it...is unwatchable. I'm out of town for work and got to the hotel room today right at 6 and naturally turned the TV to ESPN but I was just like WFT??? It's like watching some early morning sit around the coffee table gossip show now.

Sad as I was raised in the golden era of ESPN. Back when Keith Olberman wasn't a ranting lunatic and Stuart Scott was young. Those were the days...

Another example is on the front page of ESPN.com, one of the main articles was "Spike Lee thinks it's fishy no one was signed Kaepernick."

Why is that news on a sports website what Spike Lee thinks about a the future of a backup QB? I know the answer but that's the point. Remove the politics and it's a complete non-story.

SC6 is an abomination.

That horrible show with Michele Beadle and Colin Cowherd was preferable.
Against all odds.

I think On Demand programming and DVRs are bleeding ESPN much more than politics.

My wife and I talked about it the other night when we discussed cutting the cord. We never sit down and mindlessly flip around. If we're watching TV, its something intentional or live.

ESPNs talk shows don't lend themselves to that. If news is more than 4 or 5 hours old, its pretty much useless and even if I enjoy PTI I'm not going to watch it the next day. They'd be wise to go back to the more original SportsCenter formula, replay it a ton, cut way back on discussion shows and concentrate on live events.

I don't like how the commentators have made themselves the stars while former players are made to look like idiots. We want the players. Not the average Joe. They totally missed the ball. Then they get on all this political stuff. We want the juicy sports stuff. Not CNBC nightly news. Who's in charge over there?

A bump, apparently ESPN is in the middle of massive personnel cuts.

Paul Kuharsky from the Midday 180 on 104.5, who has been the ESPN reporter for the Titans for about a decade is one of the cuts.

That really sucks for Paul. I really enjoy reading his work.

Can't say it's surprising, though. I always thought it was a tad wasteful to have a different writer covering all 32 teams.

ETA: Really surprised they canned Ed Werder the day before the Draft. They also dumped basically their entire hockey staff in the middle of the playoffs.

If we had the Longhorn Network we would know all about this...oh, wait!

Not sure why the LHN would be a source of humor for a Baylor fan. It's a major reason why the Big XII is going to go belly up, leaving Baylor to apply for membership in the AAC or Mountain West. ESPN's financial woes should not be funny to any of the 8 dwarfs in the Big XII.

That's actually a somewhat fairly recent trend, isn't it? When they first started the NFL division blogs section (I forget the year...it was maybe somewhere in like the 2003-2006 range?), Khuharsky had to cover / make the articles for all 4 teams in the AFC South Blog.
