Fine if they hate each other more, but I think historical significance of both programs involved has to come in at some point, and there are at least a dozen and a half programs historically better than Auburn, including all the ones listed above.

I'm not arguing the point that its not the biggest or most important or impactful game, but its the most hated rivarly

It is, but the main issue with it is that Auburn isn't quite in that top tier of all-time great programs.

Bigger historical rivalries than the Iron Bowl, IMO, no particular order...

USC v Notre Dame
Ohio State v Michigan
Army v Navy
Harvard v Yale
Texas v Oklahoma

All good rivalries. Another to add to the list would be the second oldest rivalry game in football, and that is Mizzou vs Kansas.

The term homecoming came from this game.

I've been told many times both on this board and in real life that it's dumb to consider Alabama as our biggest rival because it's not a division game; the Florida and Georgia games are more important. Which is impossible to refute, because they're right. The ups and downs of both programs has been a factor, but the biggest thing is the inexorable logic of division races. OSU fans will start fixating on Wisconsin and UM fans will start thinking a lot about Sparty and Nebraska. They'll have to start rooting for each other sometimes when they play each other's division rivals. Over time it's going to defang that rivalry significantly.

Best way to handle the move to divisions was to keep them in the same division and leave the game at the end of the year. Like Alabama and Auburn.
It's a little bit different. Neither Ohio State or Michigan will have a rivalry like Bama has with Auburn. It will take a lot longer for for other teams to pass Michigan on Ohio State's list of most hated teams.

I wouldn't be surprised if the two wind up in the same division after a few years, either.

Robert DeNiro plays Vince Lombardi in an up coming ESPN movie. Sounds good.

Tennessee conjured up a rivalry with Florida out of thin air within five years of going to divisions. Assuming it's going to be OSU v Wisconsin every year in that division, it won't take them long to start focusing on each other. The situation on the other side isn't as predictable, but Michigan-Michigan State is already pretty nasty.

We're talking about a long-term process, obviously. Everybody who's already an OSU fan now is going to keep focusing on Michigan. But if the next crop of Buckeye fans to come along sees that their path to the B10 championship game goes through Wisconsin every year, eventually they'll start to regard their elders' obsession with Michigan as quaint.

Good one -- If there's any rivalry in cfb that has as much or more bad blood than Auburn-Bama, it's Missouri v Kansas.

Good point about UT-UF. The Vols and Gators will have been in the same conference together for 100 years next season, and only played 19 times before 1990.

If/when the SEC goes to 16 teams, I hope they find a way to put Bama and Tennessee together.

I've heard that too. Anybody that tells you Alabama is not our biggest rival is a moron. Case closed.

Lived in St. Louis for 6 years, never heard anything about the game that would put it on par with AU/UA.

I lived in St Joe for 44 years till I moved to Knoxville. There is nothing but hate between the 2. It goes back prior to the Civil War.

Actually in my OP, I think that is the first time I ever capitalized the word kansas. What sickens me more, although she did bear me a beautiful grandson, is that my daughter is an alum of gayhawk nation.

Remember the "We Burned Your Town To The Ground" shirts from a couple years ago when both teams were highly ranked?

And the Jayhawks are named for a bunch of freedom fighter/terrorist types that used to go into Missouri and fight pro-slavery people. I lived in Columbia for a year and a half; all I heard about was how much Kansas sucks.

Did you guys catch that big smile by Cam when he was talking about the "ongoing investigation."

Bo was dead on when talking about Bama fans calling Auburn cheaters.
