That's a terrible argument when you choose to include things that are constitutionally mandated and things not paid for by fed govt.
I don't think anyone has advocated for zero taxes but there is not currently a revenue problem within govt. They do not need any more money to waste
Do any of you guys ever seriously crunch the numbers or do you just want to rant against the concept of taxes?
Total 2020 revenue from all sources was about $3.5 trillion. Spending is about $6.5 trillion leaving the largest deficit in history at $3 trillion.
2020 is an anomaly in that over $1 Trillion is being spent on COVID response and over $1 trillion is being spent on financial support programs (the stimulus checks and the boost in unemployment benefits). So let's drop those two out. That still would leave a $1 trillion deficit.
In a typical year over 50% of the federal budget is social security ($!.15 trillion), medicare ($925 billion) and medicaid . I'm guessing none of you believe in medicaid (let the poor die) but I'm betting that all of you are wanting your social security and medicare (do you really think you could afford health insurance. Those three together adds up to around $2.5 trillion. Those three are mandated. You can argue that medicaid shouldn't exist but that only saves you $450 billion, so you're still around $2 trillion. I know there are people who say there shouldn't be social security or medicare but if the Republicans tried to end those it would be the end of the party.
The next expense you is one you can't kill, the national debt. I hear some idiots say we should default, but that would simply start a collapse in the financial markets. We really only pay the interest on the debt and even with the incredibly low rates that is still $525 billion.
The next largest portion of the federal budget is the military at just under $700 billion.
So look where you're at now. Those three items now add up to $3.75 trillion. More than the total revenues.
And you still have everything left that the government does. Federal law enforcement, homeland security, federal prisons, the FAA, immigration, etc. have yet to be funded.
And I guess you all believe that the Veterans Administration should be eliminated ($218 billion). Hey they went off and defended their country and were wounded or did at least 20 years getting their retirement. Let's just cancel that out as well.
So call me all the names you want, but you decide what gets eliminated.
And don't try to say that you could do it by simply eliminating waste. That's a BS fantasy.
