Everything you need to know about the zone read

Vol8188, keep it coming dude. I'm loving this thread, especially the diagrams. Really learning a lot. Thanks :hi:

I may just be prejudice against the author because I didn't like his break down of the differences between CBJ and CBK. He didn't give a lot of real detail.

If you look at the 30 second mark of this game, there's a great example of the wham play. Almost everyone I've ever talked to has considered wham to be a trap play by a FB, WB, or TE.
BOSS TV: 49ers vs Lions (2011) - YouTube

Ya know the Power O? I’ve been obsessing on this stupid play all day because wham sounded right. Regardless, when I look at it it’s like a power play, only instead of pulling a guard they pull the TE. Just how I saw it. I would love for that to be true because that means that my obsession with the zone running game can go to even unhealthier levels of neurosis.

Also, if you feel like doing the same thing for that Leo package they run I’m sure people would love to know what the heck they’re looking at.

As a South Carolina fan, looking at these diagrammed plays is almost like seeing replays of some of the things we (Gamecocks) like to do.

I will come here more often and may have some questions for you going forward.

It is an interesting time in Columbia right now because this season I got to see the difference between zone read plays (when Shaw is in) and Spurrier's older Fun 'n' Gun offense (when Dylan is in the game).

So what would be the kryptonite to this O?
I'm guessing fast strong defenders (only guessing)
And the sec is loaded with them.

After the Dallas-Wash game, Trent Dilfer said he had spoken with several leading NFL DCs about how to stop the Skins' pistol, and to a man they said that if you have "the right QB," it's unstoppable, because it's not about Defensive talent, just numbers.

Exactly. The use of the qb in the running game gives you an extra blocker, which defenses have a tough time dealing with.

So like you said, it's a simple numbers game.

To the OP: Does Northern Illinois run Butch's offense?

Sort of. I was wondering if somebody was gonna ask that. Their QB runs a lot more with the zone-read, but that was an NFL defensive line they were playing against. That game was a good example of what it would look like if you put an SEC-caliber defense against a lower-caliber offense. And their QB couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn, so I wouldn’t take that game to mean anything as far as sceme goes.

South Carolina vs. Michigan is what kind of talent level you’re gonna look at in the future. Clemson vs. LSU is a good way to gauge it, even though Clemson runs their stuff a little differently.

If you watch Oregon tonight, you will see a lot of the plays previously diagrammed.

Also, watch their guards. Look for a play where the guard pulls and leads up inside. It's the old school power play, but I believe Oregon runs it as a counter (meaning the RB starts one way and ends up the other).

I'm pretty sure bUTch runs this as well, but I'm still trying to find more film of that and the bubble screen before I post about it.

Bajakian likes to throw screens out of any formation. He's all about being unpredictable.

I love this thread! For those of u that didnt play at a high, or any level, it helps understand what is being talked about in other threads.

Two questions:

1). I saw that Cinci was recruiting a QB, (Kempt maybe) who is 6'5 and runs a pro style offensive. What does this say about Jones since I read that a lot of people think he's focused solely on the spread?

2). Now that I'm spoiled on this "Idiots Guide to Offense" thread, is there a way to start a thread or forum on different schemes for both offense and defense? For instance, the difference between "cover two" or "cover three"? I'm sure I could find it on google but would rather spend my time on here.

1. Chip Kelly says he likes a QB who can run, not a RB who can throw (So he wants an RGIII or John Elway, not a Tebow). I am assuming bUTch feels the same.

2. Most coverages are named by the number of players with deep responsibilities. So Cover 2= Both Safeties playing deep, Cover 3=Both corner's and 1 safety playing deep, Cover 4=all 4 deep.

Just read through the entire post, Good Stuff! Learned alot. As a coach you have an excellant take on CBJ's style and scheme of play, would really like a prediction of what you think Tenn year will look like this year or are there still to many variables ie. recruiting, current talent, lack of depth and so on or is it safe to say we may be pleasently suprised this year?

Thanks! That seems easy enough. Now my mind is wandering to find other terminology I've heard that I didn't understand.

Idk. Cbj's record has normally shown improve in yr two, but not a lo to brag about in yr one.

If we stay healthy, finish this class out well, everyone is academically eligible, I think we still only win 8.

You’ll get an excellent look at some zone read with Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl tonight.

looks like it is the right time to bump this thread, since it is getting close to

Foot Ball Time in Tennessee

I've got about 4-5 of our games on my DVR and plan on breaking down what we did last year when my spring break comes. I'll also break down our spring game and compare the differences.

I look forward to reviving this thread and talking some X's and O's with everyone.

Looks like to me Nick Marshall is a RB or DB that can throw just enough to win. So Auburn is going more with the Tebow model because Marshall will be a DB or receiver if he plays NFL.
