Expectations and Keys

I'm not sure how anyone can assume a team that lost in the first round last year and adds no substantial help is a certain regional semifinalist. They'll look similar to last season, with some marginal improvement. If Kentucky takes longer than expected to find a rotation, they might win the regular season. Ole Miss has too tough a conference road schedule and I'm going to assume Renardo Sidney never gets cleared, so the winner of the East wins the league. Then, when it becomes a possession game in the postseason, having two Atlantic Sun quality point guards will make them vulnerable to anyone with a competent backcourt.

Not too many teams are returning their entire regular rotation of players from last year. The Vols are, and they're adding Hall and Goins. We're probably not adding any impact guys, but this team will be together for a second season. Last year everyone was trying to find their roles, this year there won't be an excuse for not having great chemistry. Maybe it doesn't happen, but if it doesn't, than I think that will say a lot about the direction we're headed. I think it's fair to expect at least a Sweet 16 out of this bunch. There's not much excuse for less than that when you're talking about a top 25 RPI team returning it's entire squad. Tyler, Wayne, and JP are all seniors now. And that big recruiting class has a year under it's belt now.

Hey Hat, I've never truly known, but from reading the last few posts, I'm lead to believe this.
Is the original reason you disliked Pearl the Illinois scandal? If so, what was the correct protocol? I don't know your life story and background, but does your fraternizing with coaches put your views in line with the unwritten rules that he broke?

I'm simply trying to decode a little more of the makeup of HV96.

Yes. In my opinion, you do what pretty much every other coach in college basketball history would have done. Call the Illinois staff and say, "If you keep accusing me of cheating, we are going to have serious, serious problems." That usually handles it. You sure as Hell don't tape a conversation with a 17 year old kid. Yes, my associations with coaches lead me to believe that it is better to handle things personally than run crying to the buffoons at the 'AA.

Yay! My friend the Indiana coach was right!

He also said most coaches do not care at this point about what Pearl did. There are those who still hate his guts for it, I am assuming Calipari would be similarly inclined. When you are cheating, you hate those with a passion who turn in cheaters.

yeah, its 50/50. If you keep feeding the fire, don't complain about being burned.

Unless I am the one on your ignore list, then you won't see this anyway. :)

Not you. I actually enjoy reading your posts. Even the homeristic ones!

I would add more to my ignore list, but the ego of the lone member in my list is taking up all the room! :)

I don't like his style of play. I don't like his lack of attention to detail. I don't personally like him. The harder question for me to answer would be "Hat, is there anything you do like about Bruce Pearl?"

When Bruce first arrived at UT I thought he did a great job of selling the program. He got the base excited about basketball again.

The bold part above is my biggest problem with CBP, the little things very often mean the difference between elite eight and bowing out early. Perhaps his salesmanship is completely self serving, I don't have the inside sources you obviously do. I will admit that my opinion of CBP isn't nearly as high today as it was when he first arrived.

I agree, I loved him at first but from what I've seen he seems like a sleeze off the court.

Sooo, cheating is ok, in your humble opinion.

Cheating and bending the rules is simply splitting hairs. The vast majority of coaches, especially those who are successful are guilty to some degree. I don't want to put words in hat's mouth but the "snitching" problem is most likely compounded by the fact that he used a 17 year old kid to get the goods on another program and made a tape of a conversation that should have been held in confidence.

oof!

In the service of assistance:

1. To complain is to gripe, to lay a charge, or make an accusation

2. What follows after "complain" is the subject that is being complained about

Therefore, the suggestion is that people are so hung up on associating intelligence/realism with negativity that they are willing to COMPLAIN that their negative take(read: hatred) is more thoroughly negative than another's, as though that's an indicator of knowledge.

And he's right, it's weird.

The poles are as reliable as the polls: the response to 'homerism' should never be 'anti-' on all fronts. For some reason that's what some people think the solution is, and, as you pointed out, it's just as dumb.

Thanks Lidderer. I couldn't have said it better myself. :good!:

JZ from what I am hearing he has calmed down a lot now that he is remarried. He is eager to head home after work to be with his wife instead of before where he wanted to hang out at a bar.

I really hope that his personal life will be improved and that will translate into better coaching and a better result this year for the team.

Also for all the jerks who did not understand, there is no way Pearl heads to Israel for another Maccabiah games. He wanted to coach Stephen and he did. It is commendable in that it provided a once in a lifetime memory with his son, and it sounds like we would have lost Selby no matter what.

His mom would have run into Worldwide We$ even if Pearl had been in the states.

I would say it's more about "man-ing up" and confronting the cheaters rather than wiring yourself and telling on them.

Kind of the unwritten coaching rule amongst your peers.
Exactly. Here's an anecdotal example. After Hurricane Katrina, a C-USA coach started contacting Tulane players about transferring to his school. Dave Dickerson could have reported said coach to the league office. Instead, he told him if he didn't stop tampering with his players he was going to kick his ass in the tunnel when their teams played. Tulane players received no more calls from that coach.

Hat, Jerry Green had our programs best chance to go to the elite 8 with talent that could have taken us to the final four before we folded in the last 4 minutes of the game. I also remember a certain 40 point loss Jerry Green had to a Jr. College program in the AA's. At least we haven't had that type of embarassement from Pearl.
