Expedition or Tahoe???

Its hilarious to watch the male minivan owners come out of the woodwork when an SUV is being discussed. Its like you have to say something to prove your manhood or tell us how smart you are for buying a minivan.

We get it, you like your minivan. Thats nice, but we are talking trucks here

I cant help it but when I see a dude driving a mini van I know that he has given up on life.

SUVs aren't trucks.

Why is this such a serious topic, regardless? Both vehicles have their place/uses. I've never understood being defensive over one's car selection.

A mini van is great if you don't want to fall and break a hip getting in and out of a vehicle. If you want to be a soccer Mom it is a must buy.

It's a functional vehicle for parents with multiple children. Don't see how it's just for old people or women.

A truck is a functional vehicle for people who have hauling/towing needs. Don't see how it's just for men.

Also, it really trips me out when grocery-getter truck owners (ie don't haul things, truck is super shiny and detailed, never uses truck bed for anything) act like they're somehow superior. When, in fact, they're posers.

And before anyone accuses me of being a minivan owner, I've never owned one, so I don't have a dog in the fight.

How? What is different than an SUV? I can see an advantage over a truck, but not an SUV. At least with the SUV you get some utility out of it.

I posed these questions to my sister in law after she had a kid and made my brother give up his Grand Cherokee for a tiny Mazda minivan. She had no response. Her desire to buy a minivan was Pavlovian. She believed she needed 2 kids, a dog, and a minivan with some family stick figure stickers and an advertisement for her stay at home mom job selling candles or bakeware to people. Upon achieving her dream she allowed my brother to drive an old P.O.S. honda civic. Both cars are purple as well. :whistling: I'm sure when my Nephew is old enough Ill see a stupid Upward sticker on their car and sadly realize my Nephew will be raised as a participation trophy kid.

You're right about trucks though. I wouldnt mind having one but I would hardly utilize the bed. Instead I have an SUV and a crappy collapsible trailer from Northern Tool (its not that bad) so I can get the occasional 100 bags of mulch for my trailer, a palm tree or two, and even some plastic pink flamingos when they are in stock.

But again with a minivan I see zero utility benefits over an SUV. A car sure, but not an SUV. Unless of course you don't like doing things like bending or other small exertions of effort like my Grandma, a Dodge Caravan is a great choice!

About to buy my wife a new ride. Our family has out grown our Traverse. What is everyone's thoughts on either?

P.S. I get a discount through my job for both Ford and GM. Ford I get the X plan which is about $4k off MSRP plus Ford has $5700 in rebates right now. Not sure what discount we get through GM yet.

I liked the last generation looks of the Tahoe. The inside was extremely dated though. The new Tahoe seems to lean a bit towards mini van styling aesthetically with me. I hate the front lights. The Expedition HAS to be coming close to a next generation overhaul soon..I just hope they dont go with a design similar to the "I want to try and fool people into thinking I am a Range Rover" Explorer.

Gas mileage is a big one, along with the accessibility. I'll agree with you, though, that in a lot of instances, SUVs have replaced vans in the market, but only because they've copied a lot of the design features that made vans popular in the first place.

Gas mileage..thats a good one. I tend to forget about that as it doesnt concern me much in my life. As a lot of "SUV"s have gone from the body on frame style they have replaced mini-vans. I just don't like the van look. A good example is the new Pathfinder. I liked its old look a lot. The new look isn't too bad but it comes off minivan-ish and I just cant get past that.

Obviously a lot of people buy a vehicle out of necessity and not on how it makes them look. But the fact remains that you often will be judged on what you drive, just like one might be by the way they dress or present themselves to people. In central Florida I see a TON of old rusty piece of sh#t toyota's and hondas. Some people will say they drive them because they are reliable. I say if you are driving a 1995 honda civic you probably have terrible credit and low income.

I am contemplating several new SUV's but I'm shallow and I will probably pick a luxury one although I could save money and get everything I need in an American brand.

This thread is now firing on all cylinders.

Yeah, forget that Tahoe/Expedition crap. The van/suv debate is far more interesting.

And judging someone by what they drive is a sad way to live your life, kinda like "insulting" someone by saying they live in a trailer. Some of the nicest people I know live in trailers.

We got ford v. Chevy battle. Manliness being questioned. Personal attacks on other people. Just missing a bit of bigotry and racism and we will have some real mayhem.

As far as a van vs SUV, it would be a hard choice to make. I would have to see how well minivans drive. If a minivan feels a lot more component in the turns I would be willing to make the sacrifice in looks.

Then again I don't see myself wanting a big family, so I would prefer a hatchback or wagon.

I know i am in the minority with this, but......you should look at the new Dodge Durangos.

I had a 99 Durango and really liked it, put 200k on it without any major issues. I just bought an 11' 4Runner and it is nice but not as comfortable or ergonomic as the Durango was. I also looked at a 12' Durango before buying the 4Runner, and would have bought it if it was not for the huge deal i got on the 4Runner.

I like the 2014 Durango. I would consider an R/T for myself. My biggest beef is I dont know if it has a dimming driver side mirror or not. I told myself that would be a must in my next vehicle.
