Fair to say Vols on the cusp of either emulating or surpassing Fulmer Cutcliffe Chavis years?

No. And that's not a crack on Heupel and his staff. It's just that the SEC is WAYYYY more competitive than it was in the 90's.

In a league where you have Saban, Smart, Kelly, Freeze, Kiffin, Stoops, and you know Texas and Oklahoma will be tough, plus Florida won't be down for long. It's going to be damn hard to win in this league. I think we'll have success but that run in the 90's will be damn tough to replicate or surpass.

I agree with everything you said….BUT I have a lot of faith that Heupel is an anomaly. He will transcend the current level of coaches, and be something that we’ve never seen. And I’m only partially drunk.

Sort of. Mostly the "beyond" part. As in someone born in the 1990s or 2000s.

Because a baby born in 1980 would be an adult of 18 for the national title game against FSU in the championship '98 season. A baby born in 1987 would be 20 years old the last time we played in Atlanta for the SEC championship (the 2007 season). And even if they weren't quite adults yet, the babies born on the last day of December in 1989 would still have been old enough to remember either or both of those really good years.

Last year was hella fun, agreed. But any year that we play for a championship is better than any year that we don't.

Go Vols!
Go Vols!

But I’d strongly argue Hooker and the 22 Vols would smash the 06 east champ team. Like bad 50 something to 20. I almost threw the 2016 team in there but I think last years teams would also smash them by 20+

Just for S&G, a breakdown of losses from 1989 - 2008. Postseason included. Majors promoted Fulmer to OC in 1989. Great move as Phillip, who had been a top notch OL coach and recruiter, helped Majors re-establish the team to a sustained, nationally relevant program.

1989 1
1990 2
1991 3
1992 3
1993 2
1994 4
1995 1
1996 2
1997 2
1998 0

Those were fun days @thankful for him, that was fun ..... Fulmer could coach but stole Johnny Majors job and brought us Pruitt....So he's just like the guy ya hang out with sometimes...

Either the 98 or 99 Sr class went 45-5 in their 4 year run with 2 SEC and one National title. Gonna be hard to match or beat that.

The truth is, he is by far the best coach at Tennessee during our lifetime. He brought us more success than any other coach!

Too bad we did not have competent administration to provide him a sabbatical!
