Fair to say Vols on the cusp of either emulating or surpassing Fulmer Cutcliffe Chavis years?

Heupel is off to a good start and he may surpass Fulmer and Majors at Tennessee before his tenure has ended.

Wait.

In 2021 you went 7-5

In 2022 you went 11-2.

And from that you glean that you are on the cusp of a huge run? I get that every run starts somewhere, but honestly think you need to be a few years into it before you can even identify it is happening, much less that it is sustainable.

Actually that stretch would go all the way back to 1989
Not quite.

Right up until the season before '89, Johnny was still doing that thing, hot year - cold year - hot year - cold year ... in '89, we were still in that mode of expectation, I think. It wasn't until a couple of years later, after we'd experienced consistent success a few years in a row, that we came to expect greatness year in and year out.

But you're right, those high expectation did reach back all the way through Fulmer and into the latter few years of Majors' tenure.
Go Vols!

I agree the proof is in the doing.

At the same time, if you are paying attention to the events and trends inside the Vols program over the past 24 months and you CAN'T see something significantly more going on than just "7-5 followed by 11-2," then friend, you might not be much of a football fan.

Where they had a run of ten years give or take averaging 10-11 wins a year? Side note thanks to all of our teachers grade school and college. I know you are either in school today or headed back soon, just a simple shout out thanks.

Possible he has figured it out. He's had great success in the transfer portal. We are close to finishing with top 5 class.

He's closer than he frankly should be at this point. We can thank the NIL in part for that.

Fingers crossed now and all eyes are on Milton. Just a few weeks away...

I was thinking about this the other day. Freeze is going to have Auburn back to being good again soon. I don’t think we (Vol fans) are necessarily giving enough thought to the idea that Auburn could be back to being a rival of ours in the next few years. We’re going play them every other year. Heupel vs Freeze will be a matchup of two of the great offensive coaches in college football.
Agreed

The 2001 loss is slightly less inexplicable now that we know who Saban is. At the time he was a nobody.

TN had no business losing that game. We had more talent and depth while knocking out there QB and RB.

I knew it was over for Fulmer when his more talented TN team lost to Saban’s Bama team. Fulmer was lost the entire game and his team looked unprepared, esp on the on-sides kick.

I agree, but it makes a little more sense when you realize in retrospect that Saban was the GOAT, and that's who pulled off this inexplicable upset. At the time, his profile was no greater than Houston Nutt's, so it was even more baffling.

Some of you guys might be too young to remember this, but there was a time that if Tennessee lost a game, it was shocking and felt like it derailed the entire season's expectations. We are not even there yet.
So your close to a 100 years old ? 1928 - 1930 was maybe the closest we got to those expectations.

Not necessarily, losing to Florida early in the season like we did in 1995, 1996 and 1999 took us out of national title hopes

Coaching & Recruiting; which Tennessee appears to be doing very well. To go 11-2 2nd year with a depleted roster bodes well for the future with a top 15 class (and the QB who is good enough to start now) followed up by a top 5 class (looking like that for sure) . All reports are that players love this Head Coach. So, yeah it is sustainable.

I have no idea whether last year's success will be sustained. UT fans obviously think so and are hopeful, don't blame you. I would be, too.

Just think its premature to declare it to actually be in progress.

Get serious. To leap from one good season to, "hey, will we win multiple national titles?" is grossly premature, even if Vol fans are in a heady state.
