Ferguson vs. Dobbs

Dobbs or Ferguson?

They're both big time recruits with a lot of upside. Both are competitors. Since the offense is apparently a read option offense then the one with the best wheels gets the nod. With Manne Quin(Worley) at the helm, the read option has no chance. The threat of the run by the QB is a must. JMHO.

Both will make their share of mistakes, but I feel that the potential for some big plays from either is worth the risk. I would lean towards Ferguson based on what I have heard about arm and athletic ability, but then I think about Dobbs decision making and that could be an edge for him. I have seen neither play, but I hope that changes.

Anyone remember a freshman leading the Vols to victory over a top 10 Georgia team at their place in 2004? It wasn't Ainge's first game but it was very early and his first tough road test.

I do not go to every practice, so I will not judge the kids....,Until they play 1 game......then they're either UTs savior or Dead to me.

Just because he played decent in the spring game doesn't mean he plays good all the time...Can't quite figure out what this thing is with Dobbs that some UT fans are so excited about...I mean he is an ok qb from his highlights but nothing to write home about.

1) you obviously don't follow UT football too much b/c Dobbs didn't play in the Spring, therefore, it makes your opinion irrelevant to me and 2) I don't put a whole lot into HS highlights as a number of factors can help or hurt a players stats at that level (i.e., surrounding talent on ones team and their opponents talent to name a couple). If you were to put a whole lot into a players stats and HS game film, Worley was all world. Dobbs is good dude. He was very good at camps and his HS film was solid too. Go back and take a closer look. 3) he is the ideal QB for this system. Do I need to spell it out for you and the other neysayers? He can run and he can pass. If you can't do both of these, you are going to be average, at best, in this system. Ferguson can't run (well). Worley and and Peterman can't pass. Argue if you want, but that is the truth. He was the only QB hand-selected by CBJ. I put my faith in CBF, not you or any other pretend-to-be "Monday Morning Quarterbacks" on this website.

I believe Dobbs was the only QB to keep the ball and actually run it at the open practice.... I think the other 3 handed it off every time...

I also think CBJ announced the QB was live (could be hit) everytime Dobbs was under center...

Again I could be wrong and Someone can correct me if I am wrong...

Just a break down based mostly off of things heard through go vols extra and coach interviews.

-Ferguson was complimented by CBJ during fall camp a day or two as having "really stepped up." This is why most assume he has the advantage over Dobbs.

-Ferguson supposedly has the strongest arm of the bunch. Some have compared him to Tyler bray in that his arm is strong enough that he likes to challenge the defense as take some risks.

-Ferguson is a scrappy kid with a winners mentality. He won almost every game he's played since middle school. In several interviews before he stepped on campus, he stated his main focus was to "get on campus and win the starting job."

-Ferguson competed and did well at the Elite 11 competition, despite having a broken thumb on his throwing hand. He showed some grit and determination in that.

-Trent Dilfer, who saw both Dobbs and Ferguson at the Elite 11 described Ferguson as scrappy a "gamer" who finds ways to win and Dobbs as a "silent assassin" and very cerebral.

-Dobbs showed out during the open practice with a nice deep pass and a scramble where he shook Jaron Toney. Worley afterward complimented him and noted that they've seen him have some nice scrambles and moves throughout camp.

-Dobbs and Ferguson have similar straight line speed, but Dobbs has been described as more athletic and fluid. He has a bit of shake and bake in him, but he is by no means Mike Vick speed wise. Think more along the lines of Chris Leak.

-Dobbs may be more athletic, but Ferguson definitely has the speed and athleticism to run the read option and pick up 4-5 yds when the defense leaves it on the field for him or exten some plays with his feet to make some throws. He's still a pass first guy.

-Dobbs ran the scout team offense last week, mimicking Mariota for the defense.

-Coach Jancek commented last week that Dobbs have the defense some fits running the scout team. Said he took off with the ball a few times and looked athletic.

-Dobbs has been on campus longer and supposedly has the playbook learned down pat (though he hasn't always executed in practice). Not surprising from a kid who learned his high school playbook in a day.

-Ferguson and North practiced a bit together before stepping on campus in the spring/summer. They may have some chemistry because of this.

-Dobbs received some first strong snaps at some point in camp and made a few positive plays, but he fumbled a snap and has supposedly had some trip ups with such things throughout the fall.

-The coaches have made the QB live on a lot of Dobbs's snaps throughout the fall, presumably to gauge his scrambling ability.

-Both Dobbs and Ferguson have split reps with the third team for 90% of camp.

Those are all just snippets that have come out through various media sources, but obviously none of us know how they look in individual drills or in practice for the most part. It's hard to say definitively who looks better in practice or is ahead on the depth chart because neither has gotten many reps ahead of another and we haven't gotten a chance to see either live against a starting defense.

I keep reading where some assume that if Coach Jones goes with one if the Freshman quarterbacks, it will no doubt be Ferguson. I maybe wrong, but I thought that I read where Dobbs played better during the Soring game. Just looking for insight from some that may had rationale behind these speculations.

The Coaches have stated multiple times over fall camp that they were impressed with Ferguson's swag, his command, and his arm. Said that he has been a gun slinger in the good notation. Dobbs has not had much coach talk this fall.

Coach wants to run the read option, Dobbs has the best skill set to run it. Fergie has a strong arm but only weighs 165 lbs soaking wet. Dobbs at 195 can take more punishment.

Looked at Worley's game stats. He had 1 rushing attempt for 2 yards (which was on a short yardage QB dive play). IMO if you're running an option type offence, the QB (even a slow one) should run the ball, at least occasionally, if for nothing else, to keep the defense honest.

I'm new to volnation and just got an account today. I am proud to be a part of a rich history. I am from Mississippi born and raised but have been a VOLS fan since I was 6. The last couple of years has been rough. I'm in the military and I hear all the time. But we will get back to the top where we belong. As far as the QB situation. I'm not sold on Worley at all. It's a reason why he was the Gatorade player of the year and had not many major offers. I hope we could get back to a bowl game but if we are going to rebuild this year, lets do it this year with one of the freshmen. I remember a couple of years ago when out while offensive line were freshmen and now we have the best oline in the SEC if not country.

So what's happened to Peterman? We haven't had the chance to see him really get his feet wet in a game.

Dobbs looked better in the one live scrimmage in the fall. Throws the best deep ball and is the most mobile. He had a 45 yard bomb and broke a big run when he faked out some defenders. He is more physically ready than RF, has about 20 pounds on him. Has the most big play potential and best arm of the qbs.

QB Josh Dobbs garners oohs and ahhs in Vols' open practice » GoVolsXtra
he was going against 2nd and 3rd stringers . Austen Peay moved the ball on them as well

Ahhh it took me a minute or thirty but I see what you did there. Well played.
