Sheesh…Vandy would trade QBs with us immediately if we offered.

Give the kid a chance.

So ridiculous.

I am the one that posted the thread about rebounding. However, after seeing Jackson Arnold folding at OU, the Vandy strategy seems to be the better option to win quickly.

Nico is probably better long-term (he is only a freshman) but Pavia is the better QB right now. You can't argue that after what he did Saturday. Heck, Taylen Green from Arkansas is a better QB and he proved it on Saturday as well.

I think Nico will come around and I think it really isn't on Nico as much as it is the coaching and conservative calling that has not helped his confidence/growth.

When an offense is as dysfunctional as the Vols was on Saturday, there is blame for EVERY position on the field. And that means the bulk of the blame lies at the feet of the coaching staff.
It wasn't too dysfunctional the first two drives of the 2nd half. Pretty impressive then the silly running into the punter penalty. We would have had the ball up 14-3, and then possibly put the game away. So there are actually positive moments to build on

If we lose to FL this is going to go downhill rather quickly
That would look ominous. In most years, UT could look at UK and Vandy as sure wins. Throw in MSU being down and UTEP and that gets you 8 wins. UK and Vandy look stout and both are very capable of beating this UT bunch. Lose to UF with bama looming and you have to wonder if the leadership we have can keep the train on the tracks or if some kids will check out on the season. Not all but in the era of the NIL, some will I suspect. A 6-6 or 7-5 season would be catastrophic for a program just starting to regain some excitement on the field due to the start of the Nico era. The impact on recruiting as well as the relationship between this fan base and Josh Heupel would both take major hits, too. Such a UT thing and not so far fetched IMO.

That's the issue there's going to be no break with the schedule. This is a must win game IMO to keep the programs momentum.

It seems the gameplan was to go with out normal 11 personal and vertical routes. WR's didn't get seperation, the Oline didn't block very well and Nico looked a bit shell shocked. Not sure why we didn't go with 12 personnel like we did against Oklahoma. Lots to learn from in this game. I assume every SEC team we play (and maybe others) will play a 3-3-5 or 3-2-6 against us going forward. Heupel needs to figure out how to adapt his system to play against this style defense.
I think Heupel probably wants to go vertical and Nico, too. Problem is....again....this OL can't give him the time. I know the OL is a developmental deal, but at this point, I'd hoped for far better from Elarbee. Everyone knew we had to put a solid line together for the 2 year Nico era yet here we sit with uncertainty at both tackle spots and very little depth. I'll also point a finger at our RBs in pass protection, too. Bishop and Sampson both need to get serious about that. It's way overdue.

Show's me that it wasn't as much as the game plan and attacking the "vaunted" 3-3-5... as it was PISS POOR OL and scared, rattled QB play because of the former. Our OL coach needs to be HARSHLY evaluated after this year. TOTALLY unacceptable. Heard can hit the door as far as I'm concerned. His lack of effort is appalling. If he's playing hurt... thats another story all together.

Vanderbilt... lol

I personally don't think Nico is the problem, it is how we are coaching around him but I will state that Taylen Green looked like a far better QB than Nico Saturday night.

Perhaps instead of investing in unproven High School QBs, we should be trying the Vandy strategy and going and finding a solid G5 level QB and paying them to transfer over.
We have a solid G5 QB on the bench already, Gaston. Are you calling for him to start against the Gators?

I have called out that I think it is more coaching than Nico but we are seeing busts with these highly rated QBs. Look at Jackson Arnold.

You can't deny that Pavia is a better QB than Nico right now. Vandy has no where near the talent at WR, Offensive line, etc. but look at the stats they put up against Alabama. Pavia and the offense isn't losing games for Vandy. It has been the defense. Vandy probably shouldn't have beaten Missouri if the ball had bounced a different way and defensive lapses cost them the game against Georgia State (ironically similar to our loss to the same team).

If you want to win right away, it is better to go grab a solid QB with experience. It is the NFL mentality of grabbing a great Rookie versus grabbing a transfer QB that has performed well in the NFL already.

So do we know the grading on the OL from Saturday night? Who did well and who wiffed the most?
Karic played pretty well. Heard and Campbell were terrible. Mays and Spraggins weren't great.

Kinda surprised that as much as they blitzed we didn’t run a HB screen to Sampson and make them pay for it. A few times they were in our backfield, but there was green grass in front.
The play calling was so strange. No RB/TE screens or shovel passes. Nothing to keep the blitz honest. I don't get it.

I am not happy about play calling to help Nico (quick passes and lack of use of RBs and TE in passing game).
This. If he's an offensive guru, it should've been fairly obvious how to attack a constant Cover 4. The comeback route was there basically all game looks like. Also, pathetic play most of the night by the tackles...

I have a friend who is an LSU fan. He had his own opinions of Heard when he left. I'm not sure I want to divulge that because I know what type of reaction it'll get, but so far, I'm not sure he was wrong.

This is my fear. Some of these NIL transfer guys tend to be head cases at time. I think they do try and care but when the going gets tough, they protect themselves and not the team.

There are ways to play around the offensive line deficiency. Going fast is one of the keys. This will hurt our ability to throw down field but that is why we need to lean on quick short passes and the running game. Eventually the defense will have to play up and get out of the 5-6 back alignment to stop run/short passes and that is when we can hit them deep.

This board in the preseason chirping was convinced that the OL was our strength. Depth and Cooper Mays would protect Nico and road grader everyone. What the hell happened? Penalities galore and the depth did not pan out.

He isn’t breaking down the entire game.
(Not even coaches have time for that)

Nico seems to have forgotten how to throw WRs open.
Play calling lacks creativity. Like why didn’t we go back to playing 12 personnel?
Why didn’t we roll the pocket from time to time?
No RBs screen?? Why TF are we still throwing deep shots to Bru?

Everything was run at them or drop back and throw to a deep, slow developing route.
And even though Nico is 6’6 he still just doesn’t see the field.
Our defense had 7 stops with Arkansas not getting any points. That should be good enough to beat any team with how good our offense should be.

Also…Arkansas is 4-2 now? Could easily be 6-0.
They’re a good team. But we are faster and supposedly more advanced.

This loss is only magnifying what we’ve seen from Nico in the past not 1, not 2, but THREE games. Yes look at his Kent State performance.

He’s not ready and he’s playing with way too much pressure on his shoulders.

Florida comes to town this week…

And I don’t care much about College Football if the Vols aren’t playing well- when they have the talent to play well.

Heupel had the Purdue game in 2021.
South Carolina game in 2022
Florida game in 2023.
Arkansas in 2024. He’s good for at least one TERRIBLE game a year. Hopefully this is that one.
Trying not to be a nega vol right now. I’m sure some will call me that, but here is what I’m seeing:

I understand there is no going up from our offense in 2022. But it is concerning the falloff that has happened once we lost Hooker. Hooker was recruited by Pruitt. Who knows what position we are in if we hadn’t gotten him.

When you look at defense Banks has gradually improved every year. As expected when taking over a bad defense. Heupel had the offense rolling and that has since drastically gotten worse as he’s gotten his own players into the system. I’m not sure how much longer fans/ our administration will put up with offensive woes when that is supposed to be his specialty. Not to mention, it’s very likely Banks will get a shot at a smaller school pretty soon. If we lose the coordinator of the one unit that is playing well as a whole, we better make a good hire.

The hope is that the offense will start to gel under a new qb and we will figure out our OL struggles. Most teams have weaknesses along the OL. Our problem is we can’t seem to scheme around it.

Y Corner, Snag, Y Sail, Slants, Spacing, Smash, HB Screen, Speed Option

We did none of them. Other than slants one time.

Maybe some of yall can watch and learn that Nico isn't the only guy on the field. WRs weren't getting open and our OL is soft as hell getting manhandled by a 3 man front

If teh Vols take care of Bama at home , all of this will be forgotten , hopefully that happens and the team is very talented .

Been a subscriber for a while. Bull does a good job.

He passes the blame around. He points out several open receivers for potential TDs that Nico missed too.
Let’s not forget he is RS FRESHMAN. He has talent and will get better. NIL and portal equal parity.

Synopsis: Combination of poor effort from the OL and growing pains from Nico.
