At this point the only way TN passes UF for #1 is if a whole bunch of somewhat unlikely things happen.

27 total in the class, we need to hope that UF does not fill out their class fully (unlikely particularly because so many juniors are going to declare for the draft).

Pro-style quarterback

1. Tyler Bray
2. Matt Simms (who I wish we did not take)

Running Back
3. Can we get one of Lattimore, Dyer (from Auburn), Dillon Baxter (possible I think if we hire Todd McNair his future coach at USC as our new RB coach Rivals.com Football Recruiting - USC commits change plans), Mack Brown (from Florida) or Lache Seastrunk?

If not lets just suck it up and realize that having Oku and B Brown scared people away, but that we all know that we also have Poole and Toney Williams who if he healed from his ACL could be our second best back easily by fall. That saves us one valuable spot.

Wide Receiver

4. Markeith Ambles to have a shot at number 1, we need him to get the 5th star he deserves. He looked at least as good if not better than Prater in the practices and AA game.

5. We would be helped out a lot if we could pull Da'Rick Rogers or Justin Hunter, or Kyle Prater or Trovon Reed. If not this spot gets saved.

6. Ted Meline

7. Matt Milton

8. Kenbrell Thompkins This guy is most ready to contribute on offense if we had a game next Saturday.

Tight End

We just do not have one. We missed. If we pulled D Mosley and Dyer as a package it would not be the worst thing in the world. I am skeptical of those who say that we may use Delvin Young as a TE.

Offensive line

9. Chaz Green

10. JuWuan James whose rating should go up

11. Zach Fulton who has TONs of upside, and whose father is close with Mr. Prater up in Illinois.

Now I think we do drop M. Pair (as I said originally back in September) and end up with some combination of

12. and 13. being some combo of Torrian Wilson (who can play all OL positions), Arie Kouandjio, John Cullen, James Stone, Damien Robinson and Shon Coleman.

Defensive end

14. Corey Miller (whose rating could go up)

15. Jacques Smith who could play some LB for us if needed

16 and 17 Corey Lemonier, T.J. Stripling, and J.C. Copeland. If we got the first two, I would not be surprised to see the third look elsewhere.

Defensive Tackle

18. Brandon Willis

19. Calvin Smith

20. Kelcy Quarles or Jeffrey Whitaker

I want John Brown, but I do not think he is going to be able to make it in due to his learning disability.

Linebacker

21. Michael Taylor. He has to get a 4th star. He should get it also.

22. Christian Jones is to me a linchpin of a successful class this year. He is not a huge reach for us to get and though most think FSU, I feel like we end up with him.

23. Corey Nelson or Josh Shirley.

I predict here that Ralph Williams, another Gran guy from Miami ends up heading elsewhere (Ole Miss)

Cornerback

24. Nickell Robey

and numbers crunch leaves sweet Marques Dixon as someone who we did not even learn to misspell the name of before he had to head on...

Safety

25. Demar Dorsey another key part of this class. Angry at Florida for tripping over themselves for Matt Elam (and UF possibly getting D Riley as well.)

26. Ahmad Dixon a great pick up who can play anywhere in the secondary

FB

27. Channing Fugate a great kid who should develop well like Milton. He should help on special teams coverage early.

Kicker

28. Michael Palardy who is a difference maker I love, but when you look at all the talent left who we cannot make room for in this class, your heart breaks a bit that he cannot be at UT on an academic scholarship.

I will say that the mulligans of #3 or #5 get used to make the class 27 not 28 in total.

Blake Sims

Delvin Jones

Marcques Dixon

Marques Pair

Ralph Williams

John Brown

Any RB not in my short list above would all signal that we are in no way shape or form going to get the number 1 class this year. If the above start dropping out of this class, you may see us rocket up on NSD.

Could we still get the number 1 class? Yes. It is possible. Is it likely at this point? No. No one could have predicted that Urban Crier could so successfully lie to so many kids after quitting and that Charlie Strong leaving would have so little impact on their class. This class even if we miss on 8 of the names I have put in above and end up at #5 in the country behind Florida and Alabama in the SEC will have turned around WR, OL, DE and DL to positions of strength. Our LB haul could be exceptional or not and it depends on Christian Jones, Josh Shirley and Corey Nelson. Shirley is the least likely from that group, but the other two could join Michael Taylor and that would be an absurd group. If Lemonier joined as a DE and we just got Nelson and M Taylor and J Smith moved to LB? Another sick unit.

The coaches are doing what they need to do. When this team kicks off August of 2011 we should have more talent than everyone we play except Alabama and Florida. We will still lag behind those teams in jorts and chain wearing loser fans but we will be able to defeat them with superior coaching when we are lining up behind studs on the OL and not walk ons who cannot get 6 inches of forward movement on a FG.

No way. That response was incredibly fast. Yeah it is actually. The prediction was I would make 6 more about 2 months ago before NSD. Whoever voted for 1 more was the winner. This is it.

I cannot read that but we are not going to have the number one class no shot. We will get 3 at best likely to be 4 or 5.

I would rather us build up key positions and improve depth with quality guys than go after all 5 star guys just to boost the rankings. Just mho.

Yeah Florida will have the No.1 class this year. And they've got some players too. But we've got some too so these should be some wars over the coming years.

give up on prater for now-

USC's loss won't likely benefit the Vols, who recruited Prater and were thought to be in good shape before he committed to the Trojans.

"No, not at all," Prater said when asked if the Vols were close to USC before he declared.

Im pretty sure Florida just locked up the #1 spot. Though a top 5 class would be nothing to be disappointed about.

Nice post....We won't finish with the #1 class, but will finish in the top 5. This is going to be an excellent class. With one more class('11) Lane and the staff will finally be able to compete for championships. We might not close the gap completely with Bama or Uf, but we will be close.

We will not be number 1 in the rankings. As we have seen with previous TN class rankings, the rankings don't matter......developing the talent matters. There is little difference between 1 and 3 as long as we develop talent.

i think we keep marcques dixon why would we drop him or marques pair i know you drop em if u get better players at there position but be real man we might add one or two more player but your pretty much looking at your class of 2010 here.. be happy with wat youve got itd be awsome to get #1 recuiting class but its not that big a deal if we get top 5 thats great it all boils down to player development anyway...

Rivals.com Football Recruiting - All-star analysis: On the big stage
OLB Josh Shirley, 6-2/225, Fontana (Calif.) Kaiser
CONSIDERING: Has a top six of Arizona, Miami, Tennessee, UCLA, USC and Washington.
ASSETS: Super-athletic player with tremendous body structure and a motor that never stops.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: He got the opportunity to show off his athleticism on a 77-yard scoop and score off a blocked field goal.
WHAT WAS MOST IMPRESSIVE IN GAME:
CONCLUSION: I predict he will play as a freshman even though playing linebacker is new for this jumbo athlete. He will be too valuable on coverage teams, and too athletically gifted to ride the bench.

kind of a stupid thing to say, no? Why would they not fill out there class...so Lane Kiffin can possibly have a #1 class?

We are not going to get Jones out of Florida. The new DC is specifically a LB coach and will be very high on Jones if he misses out of Hicks.

Also why cant we take 7 OL prospects and finally all that work put into Dixon and then a week later we let him go? Sorry I wouldn't buy it especially when he saw first hand what a brandon james player can do.

We finish out with Arie, Cullen and Stone. Agree on Robey and Quarles but the LB we get is Shirley.

BY the way on DL, can anyone beat a 6 player front (ever??) of Powell, Easley, Floyd, Trail, Orr, and Ball. Powell, Floyd and Easley could easily all be top 10 and if they end up with Henderson, I may just drink into a stuper and wake up POST-NSD with a bad headache and another 3-4 years of 2nd best.

If we had Dillon Baxter, Da'Rick Rogers, Kelcy Quarles and T.J. Stripling, Corey Nelson, Christian Jones, M Taylor got his fourth star and Ambles got his fifth and the decommits played out, we would pass Florida.

As I said, a whole lot of unlikely things...more than zero % but less than 1%...

The reality is that this will be a great, not good class. The reality also is we are still chasing a team whose HC is a heart attack waiting to happen and who just lost perhaps the greatest college QB of all time. They are coming off of 2 of the last 4 NCs. We also will probably finish behind a team who just won the NC. That is a team we almost beat this year, with maybe 60% of their talent. The gap is closing. This class brings us alot closer to where we need to be.
