Five-Star Buzz U

I get disappointed when we lose a recruit we had previously "led for". That said I don't think it's all doom and gloom as our untalented players put a nose smashing on LSU and Kentucky and sent Saban back home in tears. We ate getting quality recruits and have (finally) a staff that grooms a winning culture !

**** sucks, we should ask Clemson and Michigan how it feels

But that's the problem with getting "excited" about the whims and back and forth of a HS kid. If UT "led for" them... that's about as reliable as saying he has a crush on a particular girl at a particular point. A prettier girl can always come along... or just a girl that happens to be the "new girl in town" at the right time.

Everything I see and read says that this staff recruits the right way in addition to the other things they're doing well. They're evaluating well. They're developing relationships. They're recruiting the right kinds of players and character. And... they're parting on great terms when a player chooses someone else. We as fans should follow that lead so that if the kid recognizes they should have signed with UT in a couple of years... there are no burned bridges.

Led with Nwaneri. Miss.
Supposed to land Rushing. Miss.

Can’t close our top OL targets.

Heupel is a nice guy, and we all know what the saying is about where nice guys finish. This staff is too soft when it comes to pushing for commitments. You need big uglies to win in the SEC. Maybe Heupel likes flashy offense too much to understand that. If things don’t change, we’ll be chasing the mighty Dawgs until the end of days. Even Beamer is crootin better than us.

…am I doing this right?

This staff has solid recruiters like Garner who can also develop players and there are always a couple of developer type coaches on a staff like Ellerbee, which are needed to have a well rounded staff.

No. I seldom do that either. I just don't ghost like you do as if I'm disappointed... only to come back after the high to spew more negative BS.

Anyone who has been here any length of time can tell you I'm critical of things at various times. Ask any JG fan here how that went with me. I had rounds with several people over Jones. But I try to be very, very careful NOT to do what you do... which is speak without good information and draw ironclad conclusions without ironclad PROOF.

You make criticisms out of ignorance and assumption. You draw conclusions before things are even concluded. And then when something contradicts you... you ghost until you think people will have forgotten.

He can say what he wants…the fact that he ghosts on positive news and is one of the first to post when there’s something negative is pretty solid proof of what he really is…it’s troll 101

Just had a 4-star OL commit. I guess we shouldn’t accept him since he isn’t a 5-star?
He's an interior offensive lineman, which can also play center. I really don't see him being moved outside and that is where we need help the most, IMO. He's a great pickup and I'm ecstatic to have him, though!

Dang, y’all really went in on this one. 😂

Full disclosure I was being facetious, which I clearly didn’t make obvious enough. I was a little bummed by losing Rushing and some others, but I think we’ll end up with a very strong class. FWIW the Satterwhite commitment has cured the temporary flareup of BVS that made me want to start this thread even jokingly.

Oh, and the likes on my OP are telling.

Ask Alabama how come they got all those 5 stars and still didn't beat UT last year.
I don’t to take anything away from the win but all the stars aligned that night at home. I want to get to the point where we embarrass them at home….

Hopefully this year. 😂

Sarcasm or not, I think this thread reveals how difficult recruiting is. The competition is fierce for 3 stars, much less the blue chippers. NIL has just ratcheted it up up exponentially. I think we have a chance at a top ten class, maybe top five with a break or two, but it’s not just the Bama’s and Georgia’s. Rushing stayed home. TN has always has decent classes, but making the top of the mountain is still a stretch.

Wright may have been a 5 star but he never played like one until this staff coached him though.
It takes coaching to get a five-star to play like a five-star, just as it takes coaching to get a three-star to play like a three-star or a four-star like a four-star. UGA and Bama are getting lots of five-stars and coaching them up. We're not going to beat either of those teams regularly until we start getting more five-stars. That's just the way it works.

To make an over-simplification, half of a football coaching staff's job is the coaching, and half is the recruiting. This staff is doing a good job, some coaches better than others, on the coaching side; they're not doing a great job on the recruiting side. They get paid a lot of money not just to coach, but also to recruit; they're not earning their money for the latter. When four teams that didn't even finish in the top 25 are ahead of us for 2024 in recruiting, when we lose out on a five-star to Arizona, that's not cutting it.

We are never going to out-recruit Bama and UGA as long as their current HCs are there. You just have to accept that.

13 of our 16 commits are 4 stars on at least one site and 11 of them are composite 4 stars. That’s well above average for our history.

We are coming off of one good season after years of struggling. Did everyone expect to just get every player we want? We still have to prove it wasn't a flash in the pan last year. We aren't going to just leap frog georgia, alabama, and the other big boys in recruiting. We have to prove that we can sustain the success. Our recruiting is actually at a higher level than it's been in a long time. We are getting a chance at the top talent for once. Sooner or later we will start getting them if we continue winning. That's the one major thing in most recruits mind. Every school is offering nil, Some kids may want more money but the mass majority want to win and get to the NFL.

I know some in this thread are joking but some are actually serious. Let's take a minute to understand where we are at the moment. Most of these kids are 17 or 18 years old. That means they were born in 2005 or 2006. Let's pretend they all started watching football by age 3. This is what they say growing up from TN.

2008 5-7
2009 7-6
2010 6-7
2011 5-7
2012 5-7
2013 5-7
2014 7-6
2015 9-4
2016 9-4
2017 4-8
2018 5-7
2019 8-5
2020 3-7
2021 7-6
2022 11-2

Before this last year, during those 14 years we only had two 9-win seasons, one 8-win season, and 50% of those years we had losing seasons. We had inept administrators that hire inept coaches, who squandered talent year after year. Yes, we still had an engaged fan base, but players are looking for stability, proper coaching, winning, playing in bowls games, and making it to the NFL. We did not have that for years. Now it appears we have a great AD, and good coach. However, we still have to battle the perception of the past which our rivals are all too glad to remind the prospects of every chance they get. They tell them we are a 1-year wonder; we have a gimmicky offensive, and we can't sustain it in the SEC. On top of that we still haven't settled the stupid NCAA deal.

With all of this going against us, if we land a top 10 class I will be thrilled. Yes, it will still not equal some of our rivals but expecting to do that at this point is pure foolishness. Give it 3-4 years of continued success and stability, and then you can complain about not getting top 5 classes or a bunch of 5 stars.
