'22 FL SDE Gabriel Jacas (Illinois signee)

He’s gonna add 40 or so pounds playing in college-he looks small for his frame in that wrestling video, bet that keeps the weight off him.

Thanks. As a band guy some time I get lost in the nuances of the defensive terms.
Glad to help, most positions on defense are going the way of a tweener in regards to positions. Long enough to go against a tackle and twitchy enough to drop into zone coverage which allows exotic blitz packages.

What is an edge player? Is this just a DE?

Yes, but on the weak side. In the 4-2-5, you want a bigger Strong Side DE (Blakley and Butler for the 2021 Vols), but the EDGE is a hybrid Weak Side DE/OLB who can rush the QB. The Vols call it a LEO in their defense. Young, Baron, and Harrison play that position for UT. A guy like Lawrence Taylor would have been a perfect “EDGE.”

In 34 defenses, it’s basically the JACK.

The 2018 championship was fueled by top 5 classes in 2015 and 2016. The 2016 championship by classes in the mid-teens. The typical recruit in such classes is not a three star with less than stellar offers.

In no way am I trying to take a shot at this recruit. I am speaking generally to refute this idea that top teams and the top of the recruiting rankings have nothing in common.

Of course, you’ll just raise the chicken and egg argument that the recruit rankings are driven by the teams that the recruits commit to. So, maybe easiest to just agree to disagree at this point.
One thing to look at with Dabo and Clemson classes is not just the ranking but the substance of it. He rarely signs 25 man classes so his point totals aren’t large enough to be a top 5 class but the level of player is. Right now he has like the 15th rated class (without looking it up again) but he only has like 12 kids. But within that 12, 9 are 4 or 5*. So 75% of his class is elite players. Meanwhile 25% of our class is what the services would classify as elite.
