'20 FL WR Malachi Wideman (Tennessee signee)

From what I recall, Chaney went to go watch one of Newton's JUCO games but he ended up being suspended for the first half. Considering the trouble he got in at Florida and the continuation of issues at JUCO, they opted not to pursue him. Now, maybe he indicated to the staff that he wasn't really interested in Tennessee, but they never recruited him hard.
We would have never outbid Auburn.

If Kiffin is so dirty then why did we not get Cam Newton?

Did not pass Kiffin's sniff test, maybe our peep don't play in that league, or maybe the new coach had not connected with that kind of trust. I think he did not want to put everything at risk by getting involved with the bidding for Cam Newton.

Kiffin did not care for dual threat QBs back then. If you remember he told Tahj Boyd he could be a WR at UT. He picked Matt Sims over Cam Newton because Matt was a pro style QB that fit Kiffin's system at the time. Kiffin did not have a good track record of evaluating QBs back then.

Of all the options, Newton, Petty, Boyd, and Matt Simms...we had two committed and kicked both to the curb, could have, instead, had the best of bunch and yet, chose Simms.

That is so Tennessee.

Boyd killed it at Clemson, Petty lit it up at Baylor. Turning those two guys away bordered on dumb@ss.

I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade here but I think you're underestimating Kiff in this kid's recruiting. First off, he is an excellent recruiter. Anyone who doubts that has forgotten the class he brought in here in his one year in a short period. Yeah he had a great recruiting staff behind him, but he's effective with the kids and talks their language. On top of that you're forgetting that he just spent a couple of years building relationships in Florida.

Kiffin might be a good recruiter. We'll see. But, I sure wouldn't use his first Vol class as an example of good recruiting. He derecruited two great college QBs (Boyd and Petty) who wanted to be Vols, and signed a bunch of malcontents and overrated guys. And Kiffin had a much easier sell in 2008-09 than Pruitt did upon his arrival.. SEC East titles in 2001, 2004, 2007.

Here are guys who helped the Kiffin recruiting class ranking, but did little to nothing for Vols football IMO: Bryce Brown, Nu'keese Richardson, Darren Myles, David Oku, Jerod Askew, Marsalis Teague, JerQuari Schofield, Mike Edwards, Arthur Jeffery, Nyshier Oliver, Robert Nelson, Kevin Revis, Rae Sykes. I didn't include Janzen Jackson since he had two good years for the Vols before he was kicked off. So, Kiffin's signing class here was one of the worst Vol classes in 40+ years in substance.
