Flag burners in Berkeley, California

I see your point but it seems to me that many of these protest are done just for the sake of protesting! Never before have we had people who make a career out of protesting. Since the 60's now some of these "organizers" jump from one issue to the next over the years. Seems to me they just don't want to go out and get a real job. They would rather criticize our society rather than put anything back into it!

I didnt. I suggested there were other times that faced similar hardships. I would not have enjoyed living then nor am I satisfied with our current situation.

I'm just saying this world has been the same for hundreds of years. IMO the only difference is the exposure it has the potential to get. That and no one gets beheaded for it anymore.

Which was my point I made earlier.

apparently quite a few of these burners are the same idiots protesting cutting down the trees at Cal's memorial stadium. their leader was arrested and to post bail they needed a signature of a person who had a job. they couldn't find anyone and had to send out a email to supporters to find one. and i'm not joking. this is a true story.

No, that is what makes this country "socially weak" imo. Thank you for all that you did and God Bless. The younger generations are full of disrespectful uninformed idiots that have radical ideas about the world they live in. Its a shame.
your exactly right...i am a proud american...i had a brother in law serve in this war and he returned less than a year ago and i strongly support our military but for one to burn our flag is a didgrace to every man that has sacrificed their life for these people's freedom...they need their ass kicked

They do have the right to express themselves but if it was neo-nazis burning the rainbow "gay rights" flag these same people would be up in arms complaining how intolerant that is! In some cases they are trust fund kids rebelling against the fact their parents worked their butts off to obtain some status in the world and are using their money to go to school and make an a$$ of themselves!

That's the thing. There's no bright-line rule in our constitutional law precedents. Neo-nazis burning rainbows and shouting anti-gay slogans would probably get put away because "fighting words" are not protected under free speech. The courts will not ban speech for the sake of banning speech. In O'Brien, the court said that the burning of a draft card was not protected speech because a criminal prohibition on such activity was not aimed in whole or in part at suppressing speech. It would be difficult to articular a non-speech related justification for a criminal prohibition against flag burning. Given our constitutional precedents, if this is to happen, it will take a constitutional amendment.

FWIW my view has always been that just because I may disagree with something (i.e., I wouldn't burn a flag or get an abortion), doesn't mean I am or my government is in a position to impose those views on everyone else. I say let them burn.

No way. Burning them would certainly reach the absurd threshold for cruel or unusual punishment. 7.62 between the eye sockets is much less cruel. If you think vaporization would be even less painful and humiliating, then a sabot round to the midsection would probably get it done. But burning, that's just sadistic.

I served my country for 6 long years to give these wastes the right to burn the American flag. I respect their right and disrespect them for doing it. They drink from the well of freedom until they are full....then they piss in it. I doubt anyone there has ever truly sacrificed anything. But that is what makes this country great.

A lots of the flag burning types in Berkeley are Vietnam vets, so at least some of them have shared your experience. That said, I basically agree with what you say. While I don't personally agree with flag burning, I think the freedom of dissent is what makes this country great.

Flag burners suck, the freedom to do it is what makes America great, however from what I have read they were also keeping people out by force, and even being erged by the local govt to do so and that is a felony so that freedom is not so cool.

I am sorry please allow me to preface this a little more,...... Micheal Savage has been beating a story to death this week and I figured this thread was about that. The story was pretty much that the city of Berkey and their city govt were encouraging a protest by a group called code pink who was protesting a the marine recruiters office and the were not allowing any marine hopefuls through the door without a lot of trouble and I thought that was what everyone was speaking of, I should have read a little deeper.

Thanks

the city of berkeley actually gave the code pink people their own parking space. it'd be one thing if this group was a respected anti-war group with intelligent operators. code pink is a bunch of unemployed lazy wackjobs who are probably living out of that stupid van they are parking outside of the recruitment center.

Cite the statute in question.

And are they physically keeping people from going in or are they just protesting around the entrance?
