Hope I'm wrong, but watching Mertz tape from Wisconsin, I think he is better than what he is credited for and what his number say on paper. He has a decent spiral and I think he is good at giving his team an opportunity in the passing game.

Many times though he was put in lose lose situations at Wisconsin. Unfortunately for him, I'm not sure Florida really has dangerous receiving options. They may be just as inclined to run.

Florida’s dangerous options are children or the people out of the backfield.

I have been told that 3 of those freshman wr’s are the real deal. But, again, they’re freshman. Douglas is dangerous if he catches the ball

Wilson and Jean are legit.

Mizell may redshirt to put some weight on. He looks like a toothpick out there.

I hear some people saying Florida has "Superior" talent. I am not sure right now if that is a true statement. Napier is recruiting well this cycle but those players are not on campus yet.
The only reason I bring recruiting rankings and composite talent up is because its the closest thing we have to unbiased third party measurement of the talent.

If you get me a Formula 1 race car and put me in a Grand Prix and I finish dead last, did the car suddenly get slower? Or am I just not using it to its fully potential? The coaching "talent", and a bunch of other things, come into play effecting the end results. Which is why arguing that Florida is suddenly devoid of "talent" is short sighted. Its there, they "should" win most of their games, its just all the other things limiting their potential, so we don't "see" how talented they are.

Talent is more than the end result. If you asked any honest Florida fan they wouldn't trade their roster for with most of the teams they lost to last season. Same for this season.

Our roster was garbage last year, and save for some talented young skill players and a few transfers, it’s garbage again this season.

compared to what you are used to. yeah at some point no one can make chicken salad from chicken crap; but your coaches should be able to at least break an egg to make an omelet.

I would still put money down on most teams with lesser recruiting rankings being willing to trade their whole team for yours.

How do you explain our 2022? did our team just get suddenly more "talented" because we won a lot of games? Or was it pretty much the same talent we had before and our coaches figured something out?

You don't consider that many of those players transferred/left. I would say Utah has more talent right now. I didn't keep up with where Florida finished in 2022 but apparently Dan Mullen left the cupboard pretty bare for Napier. I don't think Napier is a great coach but he was left with a bag of crap. Kind of reminds me of what Dooley left Butch Jones.

I can’t speak for UT because I don’t follow their recruiting classes.

This is what I know about UF’s best talent recently.

Our most talented QB recently was a 2* whose only other offer was Houston Baptist. He was a Heisman finalist a few years ago.

Our most explosive playmaker recently was a 3* ATH. He just won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs.

The best WR on our roster is a 3* transfer from Arizona State. The last 5* WR we had was a transfer from Penn State who wouldn’t see the field on any of our championship contending teams under Spurrier or Meyer.

We have a 5* LB from Ft Lauderdale who hasn’t played meaningful downs in three seasons. He’s listed as a backup on the depth chart.

Recruiting rankings are a necessary evil, but they will always be an inexact science. Then there’s attrition that few take into account.

Based on the eye test, and the level of talent we’re used to seeing in Gainesville, this roster is subpar.

I want UF to win all their games until they meet the Vols. It will make it so much sweeter when the Vols win!

Desmond just said that the QB with the worst QBR in the country last year "could become one of the best QBs in the SEC."

Mertz had me and you as WR’s at Wisconsin. The last two years he was there, they were among the leaders in the nation in drops, 90+ drops both years. That should be much better at FL.

You're forgetting where the talent is and isn't. Where the youth and inexperience is focused.

Biggest issue is QB. Seems unlikely we are much of a threat through the air.

Just hoping that the gators bring that same intensity and motivation that they showed in their bowl game last year to these first few games of the season.

Still think fans of SEC teams rooting against other SEC teams in non conference games is short-sighted.
If an SEC team is so far down that we are stealing their top recruits and their fan base is demoralized, then I am happy to root for them. But that’s not the situation at UF. That said, I wouldn’t mind seeing UF knock off Utah to put both the Pac-? and the Big-? In their place.

We always pull for Florida to lose every game. I’m pretty sure it’s in the vol fan handbook somewhere.
