The AP poll was only in its 3rd year at that point - and really wasnt carrying much more weight, power, whatever than any of the other polls at that time, much whom had been around 10,20, even 40 years at that point - and wouldn't become such a big/dominant deal until the late 1940s/1950s.
To go back to before then and assign higher or lesser value to teams (when things/situations were different at those times of selection or awarding) just based upon how the poll pecking order later turned out just seems too revisionist to me (more than anything else)
Now I have a harder time with 1940 but definitely harder with accepting 1967 and 1956 (one-poll ones)
...can understand the situation around 50 a bit better though; but the school should really claim no more than 4 at most
(I do though feel the 39 team got more snubbed...but after comparing schedules, how conferences were won, etc, i can at least say it maybe is a bit more.... somewhat understandable)

Bama gets a lot of crap for bs title claims, but Tennessee is actually worse. Y'all claim 4 extra ones that are pretty dubious. The NCAA says 2, and so does your own bookstore.

1) The BCS is a combination of polls and math. If it had just been up the math systems, OSU would have played LSU.

2) Bryant never said that or anything like it.

I fear that you might well be right. Six wins would be pretty darn good, under the circumstances.

The irony is that, as well as we have recruited and with the coaching changes, I can see us at 6-6 this year, and 10-2 or better next year and playing for the SECC.

Going to be a battle of two of the worst QB's in the SEC when the Aggies and Gators meet up. Florida's defense will be legit next year. No idea what's going to happen.

Tennessee has losing records against all of the top 10 football programs except OSU and possibly Michigan. I know we are 1-2 against Texas and OU, although all three games against TU WERE PLAYED IN THE STATE OF TEXAS, which I think is a crock of **** but pretty dead on about TU's scheduling philosophy.

We could have tied the series or lead with Penn State if Foster didn't fumble on the 10 yard line in the bowl game and could be leading the OU series if we didn't miss a last second field goal. Also, think we would have won the consensus national championship that year too if the field goal against OU was good. Heard that OU game was a classic.

I'm not trolling, just pointing out the fact that Vol fans can't really say anything to Bama about claiming bs titles when they're actually worse in that regard.
