Barking up the wrong tree with this one. See my comments about Fulmer with and without his clutch OC and recruiting guru. Production on the field and wins/losses are night and day. HC are only as good as their assistants and recruiters.

I think you are giving CUM entirely too much credit, just like alot of the Fulmerites did around here for his last couple of seasons.

Fulmer won the NC the year AFTER PManning. Urban and Mack stumbled around aimlessly the year after their schools' best QB left.

I get the impression from him that he won't do that. As a matter of fact, I would think he'd second-guess himself for returning before I'd expect him to be blindly loyal when the right pieces aren't in place.

Do you feel otherwise?

Meyer won't allow this to continue. The guy was so blinded that he made the right choices that he didn't realize how far the program had fallen. One of the main reason he allow Dazz to take over is because he doesn't trust outsiders which is part of the reason Brantley, Lemmon, Justin T and Hands are saw so much pt when younger players should be in the game.

Stepping on Brantley's toes is stepping on the uncle's toes, and that could be disturbing to some other old gators .... :)

Doesn't take too long for you to want to run a guy out of town, does it?

Just to remind you, last year he had what many felt to be one of the greatest recruiting classes of all time and he did it while he was in his "retirement".

Yeah, this year has been a major disappointment for Florida but as one of the Gator fans pointed out, there's a lack of leadership on that team of 5*s ...the importance or value of that was proven this year by both the Gators and Texas, the so called co-kings of recruiting.

How does UF recruit offensive players when the coaches on the sideline don't know what offenese they're running from down to down?

It was bad TV to see Meyer alternately scream at his QB and try to rub the hair off his own head -- for 4 quarters vs. FSU.

Tennessee and UGA stunk in 2010. No great accomplishment there.

Meyer has had 5 straight top 10 recruiting classes. But for Mack Brown's squad, Florida is the most dissapointing team in college football.

It's not about the W-L with me this season. It's the lack of development and passion from the team. We look like FSU of the last five years. I can only name about 5 players that have progressed or gives 100% each game. That comes down from the Top.

FREEZER BURN

Florida: Where do you start with the Gators? The obvious place is the offense, which reached a level of ineptitude this season thatÂ’s mind-boggling when you consider the talent the Gators have raked in the past few years. ItÂ’s safe to say no coaching staff in America did less with more than the Gators this season. A lot of it seemed to be pure stubbornness (or maybe arrogance). Come on, running the spread offense with John Brantley? What happened to building the offense around what he does best? Something has to give, and there were rumblings all season that several of the players in the GatorsÂ’ touted freshman class werenÂ’t happy. Urban Meyer conceded earlier this week that he faces a major rebuilding job. He has some tough choices to make, too -- the kind of choices that often arenÂ’t popular ones with his coaches or players.

lol The dumbest statement I've seen on Volnation. You take away a few plays from any team and I'm pretty sure most teams wouldn't have a NC.
What you said about taking away plays is somewhat true - but sometimes taking away a play or two here or there is the diff of a W or L, which is the diff. of being in the NC game or not. I really don't think that's it's a dumb statement, most pundits and msg board readers in FL and across the country do not discount Tebow's impact on the 2006 season. Without his basketball shot TD passes and his 95% (pure guess) success ratio on 3rd-4th down & short, I'm not so sure Gators would've been in a position to win the NC, at any rate it's debatable... and if it's debatable then surely it's not the "dumbest statement" you've ever read on VolNation! I can find about 3 dumber ones just in this thread!

This thread is full of dumb...I can't help but chuckle how less than 12 months ago Urbie was the shining example on Volnation of the type of coach we should have hired instead of "settling" on Dooley. Today, he has now been annointed as the biggest failure in college coaching.

Ah, today Urbie and Brown...I guess Saban's death watch begins in the morning?

The reason i keep commenting on this topic is some of you Gator fans come on this site for vol fans and rub it in.All year long i kept reading how Tennessee will never improve under Dooley.Fact is Tennessee has improved under Dooley.Considering the hand he was dealt Tennessee is one of the most improved teams in the conference the start of the season to the end.I am happy with the direction of the team. GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Both.. after this weekend we lost the lead for KB because of Meyer sticking with Dazz. Most of our high profile recruits have been on defense over the last two cycles so I think Meyer is betting on them coming around next season. This season was a total failure. I knew we would fall but this is hard to handle. Can't blame any kid that doesn't want to be part of this mess in Gainesville.Three Qbs is crazy but when you have three different people game planning I guess you geta three ring circus. I believe Urban will make the right changes. IF not he could be the next Larry Croker.

Speaking of Larry Coker, bet you guys don't know where he is? The University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) hired him as their first football coach which is a great hire for a school that is just starting their football program. I believe they start playing next season, UTSA Roadrunners, FWIW. I live about 10 miles from their campus. They will play their games in the Alamodome until they build a stadium.

HG, the point the poster made is that without Tebow, UMeyer has produced average results.

Numbers don't lie.

Taking nothing away from Tebow but IMO people give him too much credit for 2006.

Our boy Urbie has been a winner wherever he's been, so to claim he only won at Florida because of Tebow is too large of a reach for me. I'd have to defer to the Gator fans to determine how much blame should go to the staff but you better expect him to win again in Gainesville should he remain as the Head Coach.

His comment about fixing their problems with recruiting left me scratching my head for a moment. But, it's probably safe to say what he means by this is the need to recruit some better leaders. In hindsight, losing Tebow and Spikes was more damaging in that regard than anyone actually anticipated, despite the fact that others voiced this concern before the year began. I think most people felt that a locker room full of 4* and 5* could overcome anything.

In my opinion, Urbie's biggest threat at this time to getting back on top is FSU. Domination by Florida schools has been very cyclical since "The U" arrived and joined the National party...and FSU has the momentum now and we'll see this in recruiting. When they no longer control the state of Florida recruiting-wise, that will spill over to the SEC as well.

You make some good points but I agree with previous posters thet I don't believe CUM used his talent wisely, that is, Mullen was the brains behind a lot of it and without Tebow FL would have been in big trouble and they relied too much on him. Personally, I don't like the guy but give credit where due he was a great football player. He had good blocking and he could get those 3-5 yards when really needed. A lot was made last year about all the returning talent FL had coming back but that didn't mean they played up to it--they didn't. Are you sure Fulmer isn't hiding on the roster somewhere? I don't see the Gators any better next year unless significant changes are made. I agree FSU is going to be draining the Gators talent from the swamp.

Absolutely, let's also acknowledge that Matt Simms did a pretty good job against the tougher part of the schedule we had. Yes, we wish there had been a better outcome but we also had lots of freshmen just getting their feet on the ground. Dooley did the right thing by not throwing Bray into the fire right away. In the end, it's performance that counts no matter who's in there. I still say, and have been saying, Tyler is the real deal and the next Peyton if he continues to grow. I'm sure the time Peyton spends at Tennessee and tips he can give him will help him also. The Orange looks much brighter in Tennessee now! Woo-Hoo!

The Gators had a poor year, no one can question that. It might be the loss of Mullen, it might be it's all because Tebow left town or it is simply the fact that despite the plethora of talent in Gainesville, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who is a great leader. I'm betting it's a combination of all of those things. I'm just not ready to take the quantum leap that Meyer was exposed this year as a grossly over-rated coach.

One of the earlier posts mentioned undercurrents of discord on the team. That is a big issue going forward...when you stop competing for National Championships, the 4* and 5* kids won't want to come there to sit the bench and go 7-5.

You know, whether a program is on the way up or down, sometimes momentum is a mother to stop.

That's exactly what happened to Phil Fulmer; he neglected the program and did not develop his players and neglected recruiting sitting back on his laurels and spending his time at Krispy Kreme when he should have been out coaching/recruiting. And, you're right, it comes from the top down. It's only, and you should delegate responsibility to other coaches but as the head coach it's your responsibility to followup and always keep checking of the status of everything, recruiting, player development, everything. Fulmer let talent rot on the bench based on seniority (wait your turn) when competitiveness should have been the key--producers. Sorry, but I have no sympathy for the Gators. BTW, Fulmer is still available unless Vanderbilt hires him. LOL.

Meyer hasn't won a championship without Mullen or Strong but how many coaches have won a NC without their key OC/DC?... greats like Carrol, Bob Stoops or Bobby Bowden haven't but NO one will state that fact. Dislike Fl and Meyer all you like but he isn't the only coach to slide without key coaches inplace but he's the only one that rival fans will call a fake or fraud. Coaches are only as good as talent and people around them.

You make some excellent points and it may be a combination of all those things--all up for speculation. Best thing UT has going now is a great QB, a great coaching staff, big needs and a proven record of playing freshmen/early playing time. Guys who want to play and can reasonably expect early playing time will want to play here, not counting the rabid fan bases, stadium, etc. I would look for us to have very good recruiting classes for the foreseable future. Every school goes through cycles and we're going up and UF is going down unless they can put the brakes on it quickly. If Miami makes a good hire that would further hurt the Gators recruiting. That stomping FSU just gave UF certainly isn't going to help.
