Florida vs. air

I guarantee Florida wont be down for very long. They have good facilities, good administration, and they are in one of the best states for recruiting in the country. I am one Vol fan that guarantees they dont stay down long.

Meh. It's situational. It would have been very easy to say in 2008 "UT won't be down long. Stories tradition, great facilities, one of the best stadiums in the country."

Meanwhile 7 years later......

Thanks for the validation.

Over the past 30+ years you can point to the FSU-Miami game or UF-FSU game playing a direct role in the national title picture on at least eight occasions.

The Texas schools can't say that. The California schools can't say that.

Yet based on the misguided opinions of some here we are to believe that UF's football program is toast?

It's absolutely insane to suggest that UF is at some sort of major disadvantage, or in some sort of unrecovable competitive position because FSU is back to being a perennial national title contender.

It sure as hell didn't hurt FSU when Meyer nearly had us playing for three national titles over a four year span. If FSU can bounce back, so can we.

I believe both FSU and UF can compete at playoff level. I wouldn't even be surprised if another Florida school could be in that mix given the instate talent. Truth is I hope you guys do get back to strength quickly. All this talk about how we can't compete mentally goes back to Fulmer. I believe FL was in his head and we have pretty much sucked since that time. Our current coach and culture seems to be stronger than that. I look for the rivalry to return with UT not choking it away anymore.

And yes I was at the game last year and we didn't close the deal. I don't believe for a minute that will be a thing you see very often going forward.

We have some recent history here.

In 2012, FSU and Florida were in BCS bowls.

The very next season in 2013, FSU won the national championship and UCF....not Miami, not Florida.....but UCF, went to a BCS bowl.

UCF also won that BCS bowl as well.

Our offense just got a little less $h!tty.

Now that one made me laugh. I think Florida will go thru this season what we have had to endure the last several seasons. It probably won't take as long to dig out of it, unless McElwain is not the right guy for the task.

That was the pinnacle for UCF. It's all downhill now.

Or is it? There's a lot of talent in Florida and UCFs coach knows how to coach up 3* players. O'Leary isn't going anywhere so there is a proven system in place.

Word out of Orlando is O'Leary is retiring after this season to be UCF's full-time AD.

Don't know if it is or isn't.

The point was there is so much talent in the state to support all of these programs.

And if all the other evidence didn't convince somebody, the fact that UCF went to a BCS bowl and won should drive that point home.

In fairness UT'S line last year had zero experience. I expect them to be a lot better this year.

We, on the other hand .... ugh.

We have some experience now, still very low on talent. Most of it resides within our freshmen and that typically doesn't work. Lost our RSSr LG who started 12 games last year and has 24 career starts. Best, strongest Olineman, Jashon Robertson, freshman allamerican last year, been out virtually all fall camp with a couple of minor health issues, but he's missed time. Still don't have a true OT....will start a guard at left tackle and at center at right. And while our center proved his value last year, he still lacks the physicality you want..........we're pretty concerned. Without trying to sound like one of those fans, our Ol deficiencies will likely be the biggest factor that keeps us from legitimately competing for the SECe.

This.

And the use of the term "fans" is also appropriate. I'm sure there are some here that made the trip to Miami for the Tennessee game back in the early 2000's.

Did you see anyone who looked like they actually attended the school and were alumni?

Or did you see Vanilla Ice lookalikes who thought they were showing up to an Axe body spray audition?

I believe that game drew around 67k and the OB held 74-75k give or take. When I walked in and saw 5-8k empty seats for a top 15 matchup I was astonished. I had already witnessed Marlins and Heat crowds, and that day confirmed full circle that Miami is one of, if not the worst, sports towns in the country.

Miami is bad but the whole state of Florida is fair weathered when it comes to sports. Seems to me that outside of the Lightning, Gators and Seminoles it's pathetic.

I think the biggest problem statewide is there's too many outsiders, especially NE and Midwest. Those people, bring years of fandom of their hometown team with them and they're not going to get on board with the local teams. Marlins games drew the largest crowds when they played either NY team, the Phillies and the Braves. Because of all the Northeast-East Coast transplants and all the native Floridians who were Braves fans before we had a MLB team.

"If you can’t throw a completion against air, you’re sure as heck not going to throw one when there’s a bunch of people out there," McElwain said. "It’s pretty simple."

Judging by practice, the Gators have a long way to go to fix passing game | FOX Sports
